Flute comparison: Acoustic Samples VWinds vs SWAM. Badinerie from Suite No. 2 for flute - Johann Sebastian Bach && JazzNoodle by Maarten van der Peet (2024)Performed 'live' (TEC controler) with some edits afterwards. First performed on SWAM copied the midi for Acoustic Samples and adapted it a little bit. Keyboards by Modart Pianoteq.
Auld Lang Syne (Guy Lombardo, heavy vibrato by SWAM brass en woodwinds)
Просмотров 466Год назад
Demonstration of the heavy vibrato Guy Lombardo used in his 1947 version of the Scottish Classic 'Auld Lang Syne'. Swam can do this. (2 alto, 1 tenor, 1 tuba, 2 muted trumpets). Added bowed bass (like Guy Lombardo used it in his version) and bells-simulation on a Pianoteq Mark 1 Rhodes. There is an error in the title, can't change it...bummer
Vivid Strings by Pulse Audio: 'a short piece' by MvdP

Great sounding chamber strings library from Pulse Audio. After the launch there where problems with the shorts, but they where promptly fixed. Great support! I decided to compose a small miniature just using the shorts. (pizz. stac. stac. pop, spic.) This became 'a short piece' an original by Maarten van der Peet 2023.
Clarinet comparison: Acoustic Samples VWinds vs SWAM

The Gerschwin lick. Single take performances. Non scientific comparison. VWinds vs SWAM AS Clarinet 1 (Bb), AS Clarinet 2 (Bb), SWAM Clarinet (default) SWAM Clarinet (jazz) Both sound good. I like the auto-time vibrato of AS. I like the glissando by velocity of SWAM.. The sound of AS is more natural. The dynamic range of SWAM is larger.
Acoustic Samples VWinds Bass Clarinets

Some musical improvisation with the Bass Clarinets. I love these. First BC1, then BC2. (different timbres). And then the same sequence with added improvised piano. (Modart Pianoteq Blüthner). First Round shows the instruments. Second Round shows the breath controller lane. (TeC the original one). Copyright: Maarten van der Peet 2023

Oboe comparison: Acoustic Samples / Aaron Venture / SWAM
Просмотров 8 тыс.Год назад
An informal loose comparison between virtual oboe's based on physical modeling. The comparison is about the sound. Every VST has lots op options to sculp it's sound , but I didn't use these, more or less out of the box. Maybe a little reverb now and then. - Acoustic Samples VWinds - Aaron Venture - SWAM Lazy recording, no sheet music. One, two takes with the TeC breath controller. No quality co...

Ravel: String Quartet In F - Acoustic Samples VHorns + Midnight-Jazz Doodle
Просмотров 985Год назад
Tested library Acoustic Samples V Horns, the classical saxes, with a small part of Ravel's String Quartet in F. All 4 parts played in one-two takes (TeC). Small edits afterwards. In the same session I recorded a small Midnight-Jazz Doodle to which I cross-faded. Why? Because it sounds good! Copyright 2023: Midnight Jazz Doodle Maarten van der Peet
Aaron Venture Infinite Brass & SWAM Trumpet: Jurassic Park fragment
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 года назад
Infinite Brass (Trumpets a4) in Mozarteum No FX, no keyswitches. Added SWAM Trumpet for some spice. Tokyo Scoring Strings in the background. SWAM needed an early reflection IR and a tail from Melda Convolution reverb. I tweaked a midi file provided by Noam L. Shortened some notes for more definition and added some CC-1 dips on the end of the long notes, like in the original John Williams cue.

Thank you
harpsichord too loud for make any clear comparison
Any chance you could share the MIDI file with me so I can test Expressive E Arche with it?
This is definitely much closer than the Oboe comparison. I actually like all of the examples here for different reasons !
Acoustic samples wins
SWAM sounds like a trumpet at first. Their violin is very nice though.
This sounds very realistic!
It still sounds artificial to me.
It is artificial but less artificial than samples IMHO. For ensembles it's the other way around still. I prefer samples for ensembles above physical modeling.
Surely swam
Extremely interesting. I think it goes into the same direction as my opinion of the Roland SuperNatural string and brass sounds compared with the sample-based old SRX expansions (on a totally different level of course). The samples just have the edge in terms of realism.
Thanks for listening. Yes I think so too. A little bit of sample, probably the attack portion makes it more realistic.
Definitely a clearer more classical sound with better room details in the VWinds. In the context of the "jazz noodle" I think I prefer the SWAM. They're both good, I think, just with different strengths. I might personally go for the VWinds Flutes, though. Still a bit of work to go before getting believable enough that it would fool me, but it's staggeringly close.
I put this kind of comparison video's up as opinionless as I can, but I'll totally agree with you. Since I play more pop/jazz/hybrid than classical music, I have a slight preference for SWAM. But if I wanted more realism, I probably would use VWinds or Aaron Venture's Infinite Woodwinds, which didn't participate in this comparison.
a great one again !!!
100% wet reverb signal from swam would make it more realistic comparison
Perhaps but this was a 'Non scientific comparison' I am not that interested in making them exactly similar. I see these as different Clarinets with different ways of playing. You have to find the sweet spots of these instruments, sweet spot in sound and learn a way of playing that brings out these sweet spots. And you have to get acquainted with the configuration inside these instruments. Experimentation with different settings in the DAW, panning, reverb can definitely also help with that. All depends also a lot on style. For Klezmer and Jazz I prefer SWAM. For classical and more restrained music I prefer Acoustic Samples. When I listen back to the video after 3 months I prefer SWAM for this Gerschwin fragment (Jazz/Klezmer mixture). Even without the 100% wetness of the reverb signal! :-)
Is there a release date for Vwinds flutes yet?
It's out now
It's out, but unlike previous times, they haven't (yet) updated their main page with the new product, so you have to look for it.
Very nice showcase piece for these new samples, well done. ❤
Thanks Temme!
Lovely! Those ''strings'' though....
Thanks! I'll agree about the strings, but that midi part was just given. I did nothing with it to improve it, to rearrange it, divide it in separate sections etc.. But that was also not the point of this 'experiment'.. This was making Infinite Brass and SWAM sound good and believable compared with the original. And I think it was ok. 🙂
Beautiful
Acoustic Samples win!
What was the original name of this aria?
"Erbarme dich, mein Gott" from the "Matthäus-Passion" BWV 244
Take the best of each and combine into one. The SWAM sounds better in this comparison than I expected. And I find it hard to believe there's no way to get more fff from AcousticSamples. BTW, Does anyone have a realistic modeled string library at this level though,?
Swam is the only one with a modeled string library AFAIK. v3 is much better than v2, but it works best for solos. I know they also released a "string sections" plugin but I haven't gotten the chance to check it out.
Sorry for my late reply. Somehow I missed your remark. Yes the AcousticSamples can't go to fff. For solo strings, I find it hard to get a good tone out of the SWAM solo strings. I think the ones from Sample Modeling are better. But for that library I don't really like playing in the shorts. Too much tweaking is needed to make them sound good.
Very bright and tense string feeling, honestly sounds way better than modeling ones
They sound very nice. You think a real clarinetist can pull off all that double tonguing, in the part that goes up and down repetitively?
Good question. Yes I think it's possible. If listened to a lot of bass clarinet. (mostly modern classical music performed by dutch performer Harry Sparnaay). You should also check out the video 'Fast, light tonguing on bass clarinet' on this channel www.youtube.com/@earspasm for a more classical take. Thanks for your response!
@@Peethoven Cool, I'll check it out!
They sound so nice!
To my ears the AS clarinet sound is much closer to a real clarinet
For classical music, I think you're right and the ones for AS sound more natural although they are missing a good forte layer. And if you're looking for a Klezmer of Balkan Clarinet, AS sounds to tame to my taste and the SWAM one is a better fit. But YMMV. Thanks for your response!
Acoustic Samples for me.
Acoustic Samples is definitely a cut above the rest, the second ones really good too, if the automation programming was a bit better could be a contender. Swam just sounds synthetic to me
I think I'll agree to a certain extent. The 'not so good programming' was actually 'not so good playing'. I never used more than two takes. No editing afterwards. The latency of Aaron Ventures Infinite Woodwinds made it harder to play. The SWAM could use a little more vibrato on some notes. But I don't think it sounds synthetic and it has a beautiful quack that the others are missing. :-) The Acoustic Samples is indeed the best all-rounder. In plonkability and in sound.
This sounds awesome! Can't wait to review it
Nice bit of automation there on the reverse effect! Good idea for faster moving passages.
Thanks! That worked out well.
Very cool
Thanks for posting this sounds pretty good I was too lazy to download it
🙂 Glad to be of help!
good work
Do you write music (classical) yourself? Are you on soundcloud?
I write all kinds of music. You can find some examples here: www.youtube.com/@Peethoven/videos No soundcloud.
good work
good work. can you play with different articulation?
Thank you! If you mean if it's possible to play staccato with SWAM strings? Sure. You can do that without key-switches. Just play them shorter. If you want arcs, you have to mold the notes (vibrato and expression) and the phrasing during playing, I use a breath controller for expression and the modulation wheel for vibrato) although it's also possible to adapt the notes after recording.
Which version of Swam Oboe is this?
Version 3 the latest.
@@Peethoven thank you. really nice track, btw. thanks for putting the demo together!
@@swancakes Thank you! Glad to be helpful. And the exact version was 3.7.1.
Your comparison videos are the best.
Thank you that's very kind!
Interesting... was v2 of SM Strings not yet released when this video was out?
Yeah maybe, but I always found v2. not as aggresive sounding as v1. So even now I use v1. more for solo instruments.
@@Peethoven Interesting. I find v1 much more synthetic-sounding than v2, but I see your point.
@@TheUnderscore_ I also use v.2. It depends on the style which one I choose. I tried to recreate the 'aggresiveness' in 2 but I didn't succeed.
Haha love the percussion in the beginning before the shots. I like the rhythm and that you used the sound that can be often heard in different way. It's like trailer flamenco. 🙂
Thanks. Great description. I love it when people notice these things.
JRPG vibes.
The Acoustic Samples one knocks it out of the park. The legato is flawless, the shorts are great and there's tons of room for tweaking. ;)
Thank you for the comparison! It really helped me make a decision :)
Glad to be of help! Although I'm now curious what you decided and on what grounds? 🙂
@@Peethoven I decided on the VWinds. I like the sound of them, more so than the others. I know Aaron Venture is working on an update for his Woodwinds (and Brass, too), but, as of now, I like VWinds sound more.
@@LloydeSorrow Good choice! If you have to spend your money once, this is the one I should also choose. Although in some ways the SWAM has also it's qualities. You can have more pronounced attacks with it. The one from Aaron Venture sounds the most natural, but I can't play defined thrills with it. It has the most latency of the tree, but hopefully the update will improve on that. Enjoy your choice and make music with it. I checked out your channel, very good!
@@Peethoven for the trills, you should keep one note and trill only the other one, like a wind player does (you play the trill in the video like a keyboard player :-)
I tried myself the three libraries, Acousticsamples sounds very good with some reverb, but Aaron Venture is very good too. I love Aaron Venture Clarinets, I wonder if I need the new clarinets from AS... 😀
0:17 what is the library of these swells bbo?
You're right. I just checked my Logic Pro session. I used the "BBO glacier - VelXF sus" patch. It's in the free BBO.
@@Peethoven thank you 🙏
very nice :)!
Great! I really liked it! I partecipated too, good luck ;)
❤
👍👌
Question is... Which one do you like more @Peethoven ?
Soundwise: Sample Modeling Strings wins, For fast playing something in, playability Audio Modeling (SWAM) wins. In the end I would choose Sample Modeling Strings, I would work around the playability and the old interface and I love the sound of these instruments.
Congratulations and LIKE for your effort and your score! great job ! I made my entry just in time! Greetings from Argentina and good luck with your score! Where are you from?
Peethoven, lovely proposal with great drum introduction. Queen's surprise is amazing! Claps awesome! Congratulations and good luck!
