Rural metro is the same way. They’re for profit private departments. They sell you contracts for protection. It’s more for unincorporated areas that don’t have tax payer funded services

I know plenty of volunteer/rural departments running equiptment from the late 70s to the 90's. There isn't exactly a surplus of money.

Doctor Ya Ya Creator of Ecstasy they don’t just let your house burn if you’re not a customer, they will come out and fight your fire. They will just bill you $20,000 for fire service, on top of losing everything.

Ski Dude if I had to pick between letting my house burn, or pay grants pass rural to fight my fire? I’d pick neither, id get a bulldozer, and take down my burning house, which the debris would smother the flames, thus extinguishing the fire, and saving me a ton of money. Now I may not get my money back from insurance, but I don’t give a shit.

Daway Legit when it comes to fire service, yes it is. I believe that emergency services live fire, police, and ambulance should all be government, but healthcare should be capitalism. Once you get to he hospital, get your insurance card ready, the free healthcare stops as soon as you get to the hospital. I believe is affordable, quality healthcare. Not universal. You pay insurance for what you need covered, and what could possibly need to be covered, that is specifically tailored to you as am individual. But ambulances should definitely be government, and same thing with fire and police.

Daway Legit Who do you think pays for the Police...or public works? You do. From your taxes. Fire Departments, aside from your back country living are a public service. A private company looks to improve earnings over the previous year, each year. Screw that type of "service".

Fire coverage is NOT a right it’s a privilege,

NorthWest Firefighter ehh, kinda a right....within reason. As in the police, everywhere is someone’s district. How long exactly it will take to get there is a whole ‘nother matter. We’re a small town, but in suburbs, surrounded by other small towns. We can get anywhere in our first due district in three minutes. Add three minutes for response. Our other house in rural Ontario, is about a ten minute drive from the fire hall, and that’s pretty darn good. To the end of a single station’s district, is a twenty minute drive. Now figure you live on a farm in Alberta, or a cabin in Montana, you’re still covered by a fire department, but hoo boy, it’s gonna be a while. Thirty minutes to an hour. Even in north kabumfuk Alaska (no offence alaskans) if your yurt catches fire, a local brigade may respond, but a truck may be hours away. That’s if they even decide to show up. Back to the point, we have our fundraisers, our donation letters, but if someone calls, we go. They could be our largest donor, or the stingiest resident in town, we still give them the same service. I understand that a subscription service is a great idea for keeping lights on, bills paif, and recouping expenses, but I doubt they’ll really let someone’s house burn down because they weren’t a subscriber. The local jurisdiction wouldn’t, couldn’t, let that happen, it would be a political landmine. Every location where i’ve been, or even read about, fire service is in the borough, town, village, city, township, or county tax. The taxes are for this exact reason. The three departments with which i work, two with which i run, and the third being the department covering my residence, are all at least partially tax funded. My local career department, entirely tax funded, and the two others being fundraising and grant based, with a nice borough and township tax cheque every year. Look at police. You’re never going to pick up the phone to call in a home invasion, and the lady on the end responds “i’m sorry, police service is unavailable in your area, have a nice day”. If your local area doesn’t have a department (or they’ve gone home), the township responds. If they’re unavailable or nonexistent, then the county shows up. Perhaps the state will come too. Still, you’re getting a response. That’s where your paycheques go every period. Same with EMS. You may need to wait for a chopper, or a mountain rescue team, but they’re coming. You may get a bill after the fact, but you’ll be there to deal with it. By law, they must serve you, regardless of your ability to pay. As a fireman, i could not even fathom, let alone tolerate, leaving someone’s residence to burn to the ground because they didn’t pay. Like really, we’ve already shown up. Why not put the fire out. Save some kitties, part of a residence. The resident (or more likely the insurance company) may very well send a nice cheque, offset some expenses, the resident may send us cookies (makes our week), but that’s not on our minds when the tones drop.
