Great advice as I head out to the freezing shed. sub'd.
Really appreciate your advice.
There’s so much to study and I wish I could fold in what I practice directly into a song. For me, it seems disjointed - I work on major scales then I take on a jazz standard and wonder how to splice the two together.
That’s actually a great topic for another video - how to incorporate what you‘ve practiced into your soloing. Let me see if I can manage to do a video on that soon. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and happy practicing!
Great tips and the right video for me right now. Slow improv is exactly the right tip. I am always trying to play too fast.
Glad it helped!
Great lesson. Unfortunately, the PDF is unavailable, the link is broken
Hi Alexey, oh yeah you're right about that, sorry. Here's the link that works: www.thomashaehnlein.com/shop
Ive used duck tape when they go missing.
Hi Thomas, It looks like you just let the mouthpiece rest naturally on your bottom lip without pressing it onto your bottom teeth am I seeing that right? Do you focus more on keeping the bottom lip relaxed and using the muscles around your mouth to create the sound? I’ve seen some people say the bottom lip should go directly over the teeth, so I wanted to double-check your method. Thanks for the awesome video!
Hi Guy, I'm glad you like the video! I'd also recommend that your bottom teeth are in contact with your lower lip. As for the use of muscles: Ideally you should use as little tension as possible (at least that's one approach, but one I believe in pretty strongly). Try to use the muscles of the lower jaw that you also use for chewing to put the small but necessary pressure on the reed. The muscles around your mouth are not much needed. Anyway I'd try to not focus too much on those things. I'd rather recommend doing a few of the exercises I show in my videos, that should already help point in the right direction (f.e. the ultimate embouchure challenge). Hope that helps!
How do I order?
Hi Neil, you find the ebook on my website: www.thomashaehnlein.com/shop
Nice one, thanks
Hey guys, let me know if you have any other music-related resolutions for the coming year! Here's the list of tunes: 1. Tenor Madness 2. Straight, No Chaser 3. Autumn Leaves 4. Blue Bossa 5. Oleo 6. There Will Never Be Another You 7. All The Things You Are 8. Moment’s Notice 9. Stella by Starlight 10. Mr. PC 11. In a Sentimental Mood 12. So What
Sometimes its the setting up of the instrument before playing that makes me skip practicing sometimes. When i played acoustic guitar it was so much easier to pick up the guitar and play for a few minutes
The thing with me is that majority of my music is improvised. I've never was the person to practice making my own tunes, and I never really seen the need to learn how to stick with covers like most musicians I've seen online. Especially when I'm trying to get my own creative music out. The downside to this due to my brain picking and choosing what to remember and what not to. I normally forget how I composed my own music because I never wrote it down or anything. I just make something up and just go with the flow. I don't even know what scale I was using during composition, but I can use scales. I've used the Egyptian/Arabic scale for some tracks but not sure which one. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but it's true.
This video was informative and entertaining.
Glad you liked it!

Great tutorial, thanks!!! Would be awesome to see more of your videos about other types of approach notes - to get better at improvising😀💙
Thanks Thomas, cut to the chase.

Nice work, really love your sound and ideas!😍🎷
Danke Daniel :)
Hi...Very good advice...Thanks..
Hi...Very good advice...Thanks..
Excellent advice. 1 to 2 hours a day really works for me and makes it easier to memorize.
Fantastic video thank you! Lots to practice. Can you explain what you mean by finding the scales for each chord? Are they not all in the same scale? Thanks!!
Hi Dionysus, thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed the video! About the scales: So f.e. in the blues in G that I talk about in the video, we would use a G mixolydian scale for G7 but then for C7 we need a C mixolydian scale and for D7 we use a D mixolydian scale. so these chords all require slightly different scales. There are other more significant changes in tunes, f.e. when in a tune there is a modulation, which means the tune starts f.e. in G major and then modulates to a different tonality, f.e. E Major. So to make a long story short: Often you'll find that for different chords in one song you need different scales and therefore we always have to look carefully at that to find out which upper approaches to use. Hope that helps a bit! Let's see, maybe I can make a video about that topic at some point
Thank you, Thomas!
great advice
great great job !
Great video Thanks!
Great video, could you make some other video on approach notes?
very clear, and great tone
Impressive!
Sounds good!👍
Wonderful overview of approach notes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in an easy to follow and understand way.

Very Nice.

Hi, which one would you recommend for Bari ? (Which is my main instrument). The Jazz Lab always lifts on the left side and is not good. Tks
Hi Patrice, I don't really play bari myself, but I often see baritone players play these body straps like the BG France S40CSH strap. As an alternative you could try out the balam back strap
Beginner playing a 3? I thought they play 2
Yeah you probably wouldn't start out on a tenor 3 reed (or alto 2,5). But after a few weeks / months, it's already ok to switch to a 3 tenor reed. It's not a lot of resistance paired with a Yamaha 4C
Hallo Thomas.
