Cool! If this is a BRIDGE design competition, those students had failed miserably but they did win STRUCTURE design. Of course they were, triangles are the strongest shape that have known nowadays. I felt that these student somehow lack of reality and society common sense, they only care about competition. Their "bridge", can hold a lot more pressure but when they fail, they fail really really hard. I find this video is oddly satisfying.

The crushing effect is mainly due to the direction of the effort in the cross section. In order to prevent this effect, the blade shape has to be carefully calculated in order ro have all the direction of the effort tangent to the cross section of the tube, in other words, the final blade will have a heart shape ! This must be some formula behind it to create the best blade to suit this specification.

Solution : don't use a gasket ! but make a piston like rod wich would have a mechanical tolerance so high it would act has a gasket without any U-ring ! (like in a car engine).

I guess sometimes that years of experience does come out on top. However, in the case of the space guys, if they were making a part for a larger machine, it would have shown signs of failure early and the part could be replaced. The machine guys, it just suddenly gave out so quickly, no warning signs at all.
