We are a small family operation raising Purebred & Fullblood Simmental cattle. We raise and finish steers for local customers, a handful of yearling bulls for sale every spring and replacement quality heifers.
Mostly raising our cattle on hay in the winter and rotational grazing pastures in the summer. We grow some cash crop acres of corn and soybeans.

Cows aren't coming for hay? Is that good or bad?
Feeding the cows in the back pasture. They don't come up for the bale but we find out why.

When you grind the feed, can you pelletiz it?
@@deweysanders1461 no our grinder does not make it into pellets. I think making into pellets would only benefit in flowability in the bin.

Bales seem small, why is a 60 too big? Just for feeding purposes?
@@e.a.bfarms yeah we like to make 2nd more in that 54ish size because they are more dense and sometimes we have to unroll them by hand in the barn.
@@ohrmundtsimmentals So if you were to get a new baler you guys would probably stick to a 4x5 and under or would you bale 4x6s? I try to make everything I'm gonna feed 6 footers as it's so many less bales to feed out.
@@e.a.bfarms I'd like to find a 4x6 so at least our 1st could be 6' and 2nds could still be smaller. Our loader tractor probably couldn't handle super dense 4x6 on a regular basis. 🤷🤦

What kind of a mineral program do you use? What kind of a mineral feeder do you use? Just curious.
@@nebraskafarmer9015 This year I have been using the Nutrea Beef All Purpose mineral from tractor supply. During the summer using the flu control version. Also using a trace mineral with it for extra salt. My mineral feeder is just an old lick tub set into a truck tire. Works pretty good and it's cheap.
@@ohrmundtsimmentals I use lick tubs set in a truck tire as well! I got tired of the tubs blowing all over the pasture so I put them into the truck tire. The nice thing about that set up is I have a lot of tubs and a lot of tires, so I don't move feeders around anymore. I can put out mineral feeders everywhere and I don't have to pick them up in the fall. 😄 I also use fly control mineral. Funny thing is, I'm not really sure it's working, but while they have a lot of flies on them, they aren't fighting them.
@@nebraskafarmer9015 lol I think everyone thinks that about their fly mineral. It like flies we're ok early summer then exploded in late summer.

Good video! Don’t be afraid to feed hay while you’re grass recovers, long game
@@joeyhoosiercanine9120 thanks! Yeah not afraid to feed hay but try to keep it at a minimum.
Are you doing rotational grazing on strictly pasture grounds or do you rotate through hayfields as well. For example, take a first cutting of hay off and then graze after it grows back
@@timflick2147 we have grazed hay fields in later September when the grasses start going dormant. We just try to leave plenty of stubble.
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."-Gretzky. Good cattle there, what's the hay you feed?
@@badger1132 Yup, exactly. Our hay is typically a mix of orchard, rye and blue grass, Timothy and red/white clover. Sometimes a little alfalfa.
Do u see very many black body and white face semital bulls or bull calfs
@@bradmartin3112 we get some. It's more about the breeding. Chrome on chrome will give you anywhere from a a small blaze to almost spotted. Mostly just variations of a blaze.
Have you ever looked into a bale unroller for the 3 point? They definitely make it nicer to spread out the feed.
@@joshhorvat8247 oh definitely, even just the simple atv one. 👍
@ohrmundtsimmentals I went with a 3 pint one, as I wasnt sure how well the atv one would work during the winter. I watched George heller pulling an atv one with a skidsteer in the winter. Didn't look like a lot of fun to me.
Raa My dear friend, it is wonderful. I want to work and volunteer with you.
Your grain processing system is interesting. How long do you leave the steers on feed?
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn it's part of their fault ration from weaning until they leave at about 18-20 months old. The mix isn't super rich because of the cob so they still grow a little slower.
How does the silage corn look now? It's hard to beat corn silage.
@@e.a.bfarms it's looking decent. We might chop the field we were to pick because it's a bit bigger and the cobs look a little smaller than the other field. We are probably going to pull the chopper out next weekend and start looking that over. 😉
@@ohrmundtsimmentals Gonna be chopping time before we know it!
@@e.a.bfarms yup yup👍😊

@@lukeromberger9659 usually what I'll do is put a couple posts on different FB groups to see if anyone wants any heifers for replacements. How many acres of pasture total? Room for more animals or pretty close on stocking rate?
@@e.a.bfarms we have right about 40 acres of pasture and we're probably right at max stocking rate. That's why I keep telling Dad they need to go to the back pasture. We usually end up feeding a dozen baled during summer to stretch it out.
Great video! Man I hate fencing. . . Haha
Im sure you've probably said before, but how long are they on the paddocks before you move them?
@@joshhorvat8247 I size the paddock for an every other day move. This year being that it has been so wet, I've made them a little bit bigger than a normal year.

Do you guys ever bring them up in the yard and feed hay to save the pastures from getting tore up? Looks like a perfect time to broadcast some seed on the exposed mud.
Shop Vac in a grain drill is a Huge time saver😊. What did we do before Shop Vacs? Our rotational grazing is muddy too. All the gates and pinch points are quagmires. The cows are getting fussy…
