Sam Frees on KROQ '82
Sam Frees ("The Freeze Disease") was a natural born talent, joining the leading station (KROQ) in the nation's #2 radio market (Los Angeles) direct from his previous position -- as a waiter at Marie Callender's in Garden Grove. Here is an authentic video snippet featuring a 21-year-old Sam live on the air at KROQ, one night in (I believe) 1982 -- with special cameo appearances by Freddy Snakeskin, Dr. George "Baby" Cooing, "Shotgun Tom" Kelly (aka Buster Hymen) and John Logic. Then for a (quasi-) delightful change of pace, at approximately 10:23 in we rejoin Sam during his heavy metal heyday, post-KROQ, on the air at Z-ROCK in Reno, circa 1990 with the band Pantera (lifted directly from t...

Long before CBS reared its ugly corporate head, there was a small but influential independent LA radio station called KROQ, housed in a dumpy little building in Pasadena. From my private collection, you are cordially invited to be my in-studio guest, one weekday afternoon in the infamous KROQ air studio, circa 1982. Featuring yours truly Freddy Snakeskin at the controls, with special cameo appe...

I was a marine at Camp Pendleton in 82, 18 years old, and would play KROQ all day in the office I worked in. It drove the other older Marines crazy hahah. but they never made me take it off. So I probably heard this exact segment live when he did it. It was the best times ever. I feel sorry for the kids now, they will never know what magic was like . I heard all these songs that he's playing and loved them! I loved DA DA DA and White Horse!

loved kroq in the 80s, much better than watching tv, but loved mtv,......they had nice new wave, punk, alternative, little metal in between,......and ska, death rock,...and skinhead stuff too, ...........loved it kroq of the 80s only depeche mode 101, tour and u2 life from top of the building in los angeles, i was there, go richird blade go,...i was at magnolia high school in anaheim california in the classroom listening to kroq, much better than listening to some boring teacher giving teaching a plus, i give teaching bad rating, but i give kroq a good rating, bring back kroq with 80s music forever,.......thank you,...........marius(punk rules).

Im on the late train, listening to this in 2024. This is a great vid Freddie. I grew up listening when I was in LA in the 80's, but never made it to the station. Its interesting seeing what it looked like back then. You and the entire DJ team were LA legends. Nice bonus to see Dusty at the end.

I remember years of laughing, often with surprise, at your remarks, mangled (intentionally) names, and that wry, usually spontaneous, tone in your voice and manner. Frederick J Snakeskin was my KROQ, from the early 80s on.

Freddy and JeddMFishM had faces for radio, but loved them to death. Worked with DICK, oh, excuse me, Richard Blade, when he was in Bakersfield's 91X. What an azzhole. Loved everyone else except after Poorman when he'd get handsy. Talk about a snowstorm in that studio.

Freddy - Paul Motter here (from PHX, the Rick Scott and Kurt Funk hanger-on, also from Burbank where I first caught up with you in L.A. at the house overlooking Universal Studios). Man - KROQ was a life-changing station for me and I listened to you for a year without even knowing Freddy was my friend from Scottsdale. The songs I mostly remember were from Berlin, The Waitresses, Missing Persons, and of course the Phoenix band Killer Pussy, which you were brave enough to play. It is great to watch this.

I truly miss KROQ of the old days and as one of the biggest radio contest winners this is the station I was born on. I still have Wendy O'Williallams guitar sawed in half and Dave Edmunds guitar. From 1980 to 96 I was so lucky to get to meet all the Dj's working there and was truly a highlight of my time in LA. Miss you All.

KROQ opened my eyes to a lot of new music and people. KMET and KLOS were pretty great too, and honorable mention to KHJ. Then KNAC came along for metal fans. We had it good back then.

At 13, on the schoolbus to jr. high, I remember Snakeskin saying, "Greetings, ladies and Dobermans," instead of "Ladies and gentlemen." I just chuckled in aw, "That was so quirky, hip and clever at the same time," I've never forgotten his naturally flippant style. Man, they did great improv. Snakeskin, Poor man, Dusty had very clever banter. It was "totally hip...the only thing happenin'." ;)

In 1983/84, I was an intern for Dusty Street, answering the request line and trying to be helpful - and she was lovely. I got to meet Johnny Lydon, Nina Hagen, Jane Wiedlin, Tim Scott, and Siouxsie Sioux. Poorman was very kind and gave me my first taste of Thai food and sushi. Scott Mason seemed creepy and kind of a douche. Jed the Fish magically "lost" a very rare white vinyl Depeche Mode Black Celebration mega mix I purchased in Denmark and just kind of shrugged his shoulders when I came to the station to retrieve it. Freddy Snakeskin was the most fun to listen to. Swedish Egil and Rodney Bingenheimer were sweet. Robert Roll made the place FUN! Some of the best memories of my teenage years right in that Pasadena location.

OK, just wondering, was this the building across the street from the Hilton? Guessing you're in the second air studio built there and not the earlier one (in the corner of the building with walls that didn't quite reach the ceiling. So how's my memory holding up?

You would be correct sir, this would be the room facing the lobby (had the large window not been obstructed). I remember the earlier studio, from when I used to visit Brad Sobel occasionally. (Speaking of memory, remember me from KWST?)
