An annoying turn of dealing with delays, fortified enemy units, and not a lot of progress.

Road to Karelia Episode 7

The Seventh installment sees the widening of the bridgehead near Pskov, the destruction of a good portion of the the Velikiye Luki direction of the NorthWest front, and the gates of Talinn reached. Much discussion on the methodical approach is made.

The slow and steady strategy continues, with the second main pocket being reduced to only 3 divisions, and fresh troops shifted to the Push.

The road goes ever ever on and on. And more Soviets will be pocketed!
Road to Karelia Episode 4

Somehow the Soviet AI didn't try to breakout of the pocket that formed, and now we begin the work of clearing it out. Looks like we got the better part of an Army.

A new pocket forms? The race to trap the Soviets on the western half of the map is on.
Road to Karelia Episode 2
Просмотров 27621 день назад
The Panzers keep rolling along! Episode two continues along the road to Pskov, focusing on creating encirclements. The new retreat rules are making me think more carefully about making and clearing pockets rather than blindly pushing forward for maximum gains. Only time (and a dozen incoming episodes) will tell if this works!

Wargaming is replete with innovative mechanics, and designers are constantly pushing the boundries of what a "wargame" really is. But in this episode I want to defend the humble Combat Results Table, from the onslaught of disruptive innovation.

J'adore se jeu, mais la barrière de la langue me pénalise beaucoup, vos vidéos m'aide beaucoup "avec la traduction"😉 Merci à vous !!!

whats the game called?
@@gamingaccount-i3w Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2
@@seanblambert danke!
GG has a money machine if he makes a complete WW2 game with all theaters.
I think the final game will be War In Europe. They’ve spent the last decade building out the basis for it. It makes the most sense for the direction they’ve gone. I don’t think they will ever do another global game like A World Divided.
I agree with your choice of rail road to repair
Soynd
Germans can't be amphibious unfortunately
Yeah and I also set the rule that no one can be
As a Soviet/US main in GG games I always think about amphibious ops can’t help it .
Mainsten' s corp is overpowered. You can attack at pretty low odds and get spectacular results
I’ve never really thought about it in that way before but you’re right
I loved your a world at war series. I literally was gonna suggest it then I heard you mention it. I just got my copy and really enjoy seeing other people play it, as there really aren’t many people playing it onlibe
You gotta start putting video game titles on youtube...people are gonna have to dig deep in the search results to find any of your computer wargamming content.
I’ve tried both ways and it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. RUclips returns what it wants not what you want it to.
If a unit is unlikely to move far or breakthrough in depth you might as well use deliberate attacks which boosts lfirepower . Especially in this type of time dependant situation
Very methodical
That’s the goal. Last time I played this scenario I lost my supply lines because I went around too many units.
This time I’ll probably lose from going too slow hahaha
Thanks Sean. Just found this game couple of days ago and I have watched some videos made by you, Dojo and others which got me thinking if this could be something for me. However I am struggling if I have the time available competing with all other games and interests. Your review of WITE2 however made me decide to buy it. Also it's on sale on Steam right now at 50% discount.
I feel compelled to watch
If units are not isolated AT THE BEGINNING of the movement phase the route out of the near encircliment is still open in the games mind . This makes sense as a game mechanic in a IGOYOUGO system
One of the best Wargamer channels
Ypu should of cleared the double railway line and sllready be converting track on turn 1
Surrounding troops you could rout on turn 1 is a mistake. Everthing has to keep.moving towards lenningrad like there is no tomorrow.
The reason I’m doing pockets is because the reduced retreat losses introduced in the new patch do significantly less damage than they used to so I’m trying to clear things out more. You might be right, though. I’m really aiming to maximize Soviet losses and take everything to build up a VP lead in case I can’t make it. I have tried to go fast before but without clearing the right flank I found it hard to keep the rail open.
Think of it like this.if you pocket or surround your kill ratio will be impressive... A few hundred for 13000 or so...but you lost 16000 men from where they need to be ..,just bulldozing them aside and keeping them routing will lose you 2000 men or so but you have gained 13000 men at the front that matters
Everyone goes for the big pockets which was the Prussian legacy way . If for the sake of argument this game is a good simulation the take away I have is the Wehrmacht doctrine was followed too strictly and the Kiev pocket was a historical mistake . Hitler and OKH reacted incorrectly. ... I have played sudden death and won as the Germans by early 42 going for the direct strategy. What's interesting is the game simulation often has a historical like outcome if the German player does the big pocket .... 500000 Siberians are turning up in Nov . You want to be dug in inside Moscow to face them rather than battling for it .
I'm playing no sudden victory campaign to see if the effect of greater early loses on the Germans buckles them earlier than history
I know most of this is irrelevant to the limited scenario here but I find this game fascinating as it's one of the few games I feel you can gleen insight into what could have happened . Most games start behaving ahistorical if you leave the tram lines
You have to keep moving . Dont be scared of taking casualties
I can capture lennigrad by end of sept reliably. The direct double rail is the key . Forget pocketing as a priority.. use 1st turn bonus to attack everything in range. Pockets slow you down.
I have been hesitant to buy this game, despite enjoying a lot of hex and counter board games.
This game is amazing, buy it. I got a few videos on my youtube if you want to see it too.
As you will see in this series the scenarios are very good, and quite fun even if you never make it far in the grand campaigns. My favorite scenarios are Road to Karelia, Drama on the Danube and Red God of War. You could play those endlessly.
Remarkably playable . You can can play on instinct a great deal of the time . And the clumsy air system on AI auto is usually better than yourself . 😊
Big sale for this game on Matrix.
The fact that we French Players got the Red pieces and the British the red pieces is a crime and made me think I was British for 2 turns... Was a great game though. 10/10 would encircle British Left Flank again. I do think that the whole fort is ungarrisoned thing was largely cause most players (myself included) were very new and thought that the fort would have a garrison not under there control so I would have probably made the same mistake not knowing that it is the players that need to garrison them. I would have also liked to have seen an uncut version to better see the general ideas of what is happening as it is happening.
I usually don’t post full battles just because I don’t like going through them to censor them fully.
@@seanblambert Yea, understandable, though I would have liked an analysis of each front. But yea if that would be done for every battle it would take a lot of effort.
@@noahn627 I’ll try to work on that for this week. I have an idea to try
I like wargames that are well researched and whose mechanics produce historically believable results and gameplay. Whether that is achieved via CRTs or some other way, I don't really care. It is also good to understand that complexity doesn't equal realism, and sometimes it actually goes against it. The more complex the game is, the more room there is to find exploits in. In my opinion, Band of Brothers is the most realistic tactical WW2 game and it's relatively simple. Incidentally, it doesn't have any CRTs. I'm going to try Panzer North Africa at some point though.
Really good game. As the commander of the French Right Cavalry, I can say that the British Left Flank did not have a good time
I've been enjoying your channel. I like that you're one of few wargamers who comment liberally on both board and computer games. I share your views on everything except Celles, which I'm not familiar with. And maybe PanzerCorps 2, which I have mixed feelings about. But I especially want to call out your appreciation of World at War. That one doesn't get much play on the web for obvious reasons (i.e., it's a committment!) but it is a true classic and a favorite of mine. Keep up the good work!
Great game. As the commander for the British Right Flank the game ended suddenly from my perspective, although when looking at the objectives and the Left Flank it makes total sense.
The main objection I have to moving everything up to OKH is that it's unrealistic and gamey. It's just too convenient IMHO. I like the approach of accepting the beginning state as is, and moving things up and down the chain of command to get things where you want over time. But I certainly understand that that's not everyone's cup of tea.
Basocally a game mechanic simulates the operational art of multiple echelons used by the societ union in 44
That’s the intention, but players complained that it was too strong. So they patched in an option to tone it down a bit
It's not a game easy to grasp . The air system is an awful inelegant mess from a player pov . That said I'm on my second go as solo axis Vs AI soviet . Playing on easy mode defaults I captured Leningrad and Moscow by Oct 41 ... Now in November 41 .... Pushing for sudden death .
The game is completely changing in the version 2. Meaning all the units are coming in 3D instead of 2D. With your maps and the new Graphic Engine nice, very nice. Good luck on the competition
I do like the looks of the new game. Someone who spent much more time than me hopefully won. I’ll definitely give the new one a shot.
Great game man keep it up 👍🏻
Interesting. I've never had an issue with result tables. My quick game of choice is probably Africa Korps. Love the battles for Tobruk.
Aww what the heck I thought this was going to be about computer monitors.
There’s a game that’s called Skald with a visual filter that looks like a CRT monitor.
@@seanblambert I think I might have to rate this knowledge as "heck yeah".
CRT monitors don't need to be defended, everyone knows they're good already
@@DevinDTV Your circles are quite the echochamber if you think that.
I tried this game and there are just way, way too many counters to move every turn. It's just so tedious.
The first few turns are very tedious. Especially as the Soviets. Once the re-org is done it does get smoother. The small scenarios like the Leningrad one, as well as Drama on the Danube and Typhoon are great. You are playing the full system, it’s not like a tutorial or anything, so if you do try, give one of those a chance.
Ever since my friend Bob introduced me to DAK II, OCS is my favorite system. I need to relearn it, so please keep putting out your videos (same for Grigsby's games that you post) as it helps me out and keeps me entertained in my days from my medical bed due to my disabilities. And, thank you for taking the time to edit and put your videos together and share your thoughts and experiences. Keep it going my friend ! :-)
I’m at exactly the same point in the game with troops in exactly the same position…Lots of stuff but lacking supply to really do anything.
To me it feels like unless the Soviets make a mistake, or the weather stays clear (allowing you to push a hex with air support) it's really necessary to wait a turn until you have like 2 SP at the front. With 2 SP I'm usually able to move 1 hex. Pretty expensive, but the good news is that if and when the soviets do mess up, (like I did) you can absolutely blow the door open with a double turn. But you want to make sure you have AT LEAST 2 SP at the front (preferably 4 so you can do a proper exploitation) when you get that chance, otherwise you'll stall out too quickly. No double turn + no mistakes from soviets = just grind 1 hex every few turns (which I assume means scenario lost)
"Final patch"? Are you saying this will be the last patch, with no further patches in the future?. Or do you mean 'latest' patch? I do hope that support for the game will continue.
The developer announced no further updates to the game are planned.
What Will be the Next of Gary? join west and east?
thanks for cover the patch. This game is way too complicated for me. I usually like to watch experienced gamers .
I hope you cover AB 2 on your channel. I am not sure if your tried world war two mod for the current game. The new engine on part is going to be awesome especially when there are mods ww2 mods.
I really haven't played much. I did get the game, and tried 3-4 scenarios, but then my work was mad busy for a bit and haven't gotten back to it. What's the WWII mod called?
thanks for covering this topic. I wish you could have covered the tactics of General Hoff in WW2. He used this strategy really well. love this topic. read lots of articles about it. this video makes me want to get look into the topic again.

Great summary of the changes. I really appreciate how you talk through all the details and give examples for use. Very helpful!
Cheers for this Sean, looking forward to trying some of these out - particularly the Axis Build button.
Shame on you for choosing the wrong side. Good luck anyway.
Nice job, Sean! Map looks great, look forward to learning more about the system you created.
This video has really behaved oddly. Dunno why it went private and the thumbnail was messed up. Shame, I enjoyed making it! Hope it works now.
Your thumbnail is missing fyi.
Probably for the best. The one I made was terrible. Reverted it to the RUclips automatic one
On game preferences check the block for non automatic movement of support equipment.
