Unsolicited RPG Advice for DM Lair
I'm watching a live play from some of the biggest D&D channels and giving my honest critique of what I consider to be the deficiencies of "mainstream" games.
My hope is that I'll say something will help those of you interested in roleplaying to get more out of the hobby.

Another great video Chris!
Thanks Josh!
Great Advice!
Thanks for watching!
I don't know if those specific people claim to be, but clearly they are not immersed in the game or in their characters. They are in combat and there are background conversations about unrelated topics, the dice they bought, or some other system or windshield whippers? And the woman taking her turn just casually mention how she is still on fire, like if she was just mentioning having her t-shirt inside out.
Luke HAS potential to be 4D... he just screws himself by not applying rules of Player/GM manners in the game. Manners keeps the game flowing faster and feels like a movie vs a 2D Boardgame of after-action reports. Of course, consider that his players don't want a cinematic experience... just a boardgame. ;)
Rick! Good to hear from you pal.
@@Tablerunner Thanks... sorry about being on hiatus... Wrote an entire album of 12 songs since August. My last ditch effort to do something with my musical talents before I get too old (or suddenly "x_x" into the next world before I get the chance to do this.)
Sounds like a fun project (and a lot of work)!
Braindead feedback to tell the one guy role-playing to stop instead of telling the other players to actually do their characters' voices. And the white knighting was pathetic too.
Esper is by far one of the better videos you reviewed! You had to stretch a little Crispy on this one. Lets face it, this is good as it gets when compared to the others you have shared with us Crispy! I think hind sight is 50/50 and might take far more planning than what is possible. When it comes to dice rolls, the randomness of the game calls for this level of Improve by Esper. Great job over all Esper! Crispy, fair advice as usual.
This feedback is on point! At this level of production, you certainly expect more! Fair and wonderful critique for sure.
Helmet did risk something Crispy. He risked his hard-earned coin in his poker game with his pet ape! XD
I still want to know what happened in that card game, but not enough to watch the next episode.
In all fairness, Crispy, I think your feedback is better geared towards the more pro-type of shows that are streamed. In this case, it is friends hanging out that just likely share the game for other friends to watch. I totally get what you are doing as a game guide to help people create a better game experience. But for this group... I think you're likely imposing a little. I certainly expect more from the streamers that try to be more pro-production level. Not for this one though. Crispy, your coaching is appreciated for sure as a whole.
I think that I made that distinction in my video. I wasn't harsh to Luke or his friends and I thanked them all for posting a "private" game night for others to watch.
I had to listen to this in small chunks over 4 non-concurrent days lol, it was that confronting listening to that play style. I was afraid of what a lot of mainstream dnd was like so I never really made it through listening to whole sessions.
In your defense, it was a really long stream. Most recent one is much shorter.
I wonder if Grand Theft Auto Online Roleplayers stay in character longer than this?
I love how 98% of GM's hide behind their screen. I'm so against them. Its a literal physical barrier between you and the players. It adds division, separation and gives a me vs. you atmosphere. It also leads to fudging and dishonesty in most cases. Where the GM will fudge the die to save the player or to at least let the BEG get a hit in once before the players smoked it in one round cause you made it too weak. In other words its keeps GM's honest. This is no way a sleight against Luke, "you do you" is my motto. I really wish the screens would go away, we never needed them before. Reminds me of kids playing fort.
I ditched mine a few years ago and don't miss it at all.
I don't mind them for games that require a lot of charts.
There seems to be a growing need in this society for unsolicited advice. 🤔 At all levels.
Doing my part!
A bit of unsolicited advice couched with compliments. How to reach more people: One of your most common critiques is that you are “petty” or “bad faith” I don’t find this to be true. I find your critiques to be founded in good faith, however there are moments in which your actionable wisdom is lost in the commentary. From 7:44 - 9:22 you give some of my favorite and easily implemented advice; inform players when they take up too much time speaking in a reasonable way. This is not what was “said” per se, you communicated that message perfectly but the commentary of “too much talking” or “stop talking” makes the whole of the advice very dense. That’s not an issue for people with media literacy, but for people that don’t or won’t engage in good faith? It’s just ammunition to accuse you of the same and I don’t believe it fair for them to have that. I truly appreciate this kind of good faith well thought out critique. It’s needed in the space and I believe that you do it the best of the channels I’ve seen. If you’re fine with maybe granting those people ammunition and possibly allowing that to become part of your reputation that’s fine. But I believe you could reach way more people in the hobby if you stated the thesis of your advice in post production for your larger pieces of advice. Your content is already well thought out, and people that are willing and able to analyze it can receive really amazing advice. But for people that aren’t willing and more importantly aren’t able, they need ”lowest common denominator messaging.” And I believe it a good investment in the hobby to add a little more of that messaging in. Put simply, I like the commentary, add a little summary of advice after the commentary. Make the summary really clear so even the silliest goose could understand. It’s already something you do and a little more emphasis would go a long way. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Thanks for your comment. I can see how what you suggest could be helpful.
The one cool thing I noticed is that everyone is involved and no one has a phone out. But all in all a typical low effort hangout game. They would have had just as much "fun" playing a board/war game
That's true. No one is distracted by their phones.
Short n sweet! Solid advice here for letting players control their character and avoiding group meta gaming 😎 Let's hope they find this and it helps them improve their sessions! Here's another suggestion that might already be on your radar: a session by Guy from How to be a Great GM. Appreciate your advice and looking forward to more!
Good idea.
My guess is the gray haired fellow is used to being a DM, & unfortunately hes Meta gaming others turns, so thats why he spouts stuff as a player instead of letting her do her turn. Yes & ladies do get this treatment, more than most. However even i get this treatment, & ive been gaming longer than anyone else,(in game groups I'm in), except the guy im tied with, both since 1977.
I suspect that is true (he is or was a GM), and I do value system mastery (I just don't want to hear it). Removing committee-style turns is worth it.
Giving CR unsoliceted advice, is like giving WWE wrestlers fighting advice.
I also don't intend to watch an entire season for context. One session is quite enough for me.
Totally agree about coaching impedes the player from learning the system/character abilities well. Advice is one thing, but the school of hard knocks is the best teacher. If this was 1e, I'd be hitting them with dithering segments, making an attack after the back and forth discussion redundant till they got the message. Not sure if the guy in the black shirt was just bored on phone, or just estimating the minutes in his head before his turn finally comes around: the 5e syndrome. Grey-hair guy seems like he was a forever DM, who finally got to be a player. I've been guilty of this and seen other DM's do it as well: hard to break the impulse to provide table-talk, as so used to saying a lot more for the NPC's. Also, if they're rolling 30's to hit, these aren't low-level characters. Throwing players into high level char sheets with all the bells and whistles is usually a bad idea. She should not be asking for advice at that level and they should not be offering it. <edit>. I see you did a whole series in this vein of commentary. Haha. Fantastic Crispy. Enjoy the vitriol that is bound to be found in the comments on some of these bigger names. Will enjoy watching these. You're a nice guy but the Internet takes no prisoners of intended good will. heh
I've had a small glimpse of said vitriol. It is the internet after all.
These videos are very helpful. I recently ran my first session after a long hiatus and was able to correct some bad habits I caught learning to DM from 5e modules.
That's fantastic! Appreciate you sharing that with me.
Esper is a great guy and seems like the kind to take advice in good faith. Michelle was awesome, too.
Crispy, you need to make the intro longer and longer each video., The gag must go on.
Hahaha!
13:15 This is a big thing in coaching martial arts, too. Regardless of if we're even roleplaying, coaching someone when they didn't ask for it can get annoying. Let me do my thing, man! Allow people to make mistakes, that can be a better way to learn than always being told the "right" way to do it. It's super important to let people succeed of their own accord on the other side of that. So much more rewarding to know that you came up with something cool for your character to do on your own. That is one of the therapeutic effects of RPGs if I may bring that red-headed stepchild into the discussion lol. Great vid, love this series Crispy.
It is difficult to learn when others provide far too much coaching. Thanks Tyler!
Do not lower your expectations to the fairer sex at your gaming table. If she wants help, im sure she will ask for it. Especially if youre all close friends already. In a way, it reminds me of "helicopter parents". Weird analogy, but imagine having some people always observing you hawkishly and never allowing you to take any risk and experiment in the world, by removing the risk, making you aware of it or forbidding you to do it. Its a game let people roleplay, allow players to feel the consequences of their actions. It both makes their actions more meaningful, and they also learn faster from having the dire consequences of their own actions. A game is the perfect setting to simulate those situations and getting to experiment what works and what doesnt, in the most save way possible. Worst case, you roll a new character.
Great explanation. I feel like womens' turns being made for them is why so many women try one session and don't come back.
I can't agree more. An even hand is the way to do it. Don't treat them like they are different, because they aren't!
It appears to be common practice and I don't think that it should be.
Crispy, the moments where you just let the video run made me laugh. I know you probably could pause every other second to give feedback. Your silence was deafening. 😁 Awesome video as usual!
I imagine by now that many can already tell what I'm thinking!
Totally agree. No hooting when the bad guys roll successfully. I feel like that sometimes when the players seem to not be challenged, but it is bad form.
I think that in excess, it is a practice that encourages an adversarial relationship between player and GM.
@@TablerunnerIt depends on the table. I cheer when monsters roll high and act frustrated when they roll low because it makes it more satisfying for the players to “beat” me. I’m completely on the side of the players the whole time, but there is nothing more bonding than having a common enemy and I am willing to play that role.
Here we go.
The main reason I am watching these is to glean useful techniques to move more in the direction of '4D play.' I had never even heard of Shonner until I watched one of these and saw the reference. Watched a few of his videos and the self-righteous bitterness just smacks of elitism addiction. Seal clubbing the stupids isn't going to make me better at running the game, but I think that as a RUclips thing this is very smart. So on a practical level it seems like the GM needs to just be quiet more and let the players describe things. Give players full agency at all times over their character. Don't make meta comments (Rules, other subjects). Don't entertain hypotheticals. Don't info-dump.
The practical things you mentioned are all great concepts that I think will improve your games. It isn't all on the GM. Players have practical things that they can do to move towards a more in-character game. Thanks for the comment.
@@Tablerunner I watched a bit more of the Shonner videos and after a while I started to get his humor and style a bit more. I will chalk that up to a knee jerk reaction as I am seeing the value in a lot of what he said. I see that he was indeed a treasure. Someone who spoke out. I found you through Runeslinger and I appreciate what you are trying to do. I pretty much quit trying to be better because all of the 99% videos and podcasts made me feel like nobody cares about being better and that I was just being overbearing. I have shared your channel with a friend who also wants to do actual Role Playing.
I understand your frustration, I feel it too. All of this is advice is incredible. Thank you for making this series!
My pleasure. I hope that you get something from these that improves your own experience in the hobby!
Reddit, loved this.
I just saw the thread on r/dnd He creates a throwaway account, describes this as "tearing [him] apart", misquotes the video to make it seem worse than it is, all to farm sympathy and support. He then refuses to share the video saying that he doesn't want to send hate and harassment this way, even though that was the ultimate effect of the post in the comments. It's like he wanted all the sympathy and outrage but didn't want to share the legitimate criticisms against him.
Sorry, I'm at a loss here. I don't spend any time on Reddit so I'm not sure to what you are referring.
Was wondering what your thoughts are on the system after using a variant for Horizon? Any other systems you would’ve preferred or thought about trying in the future?
I think Total Party Skills would be a good fit, and Traveller for sure.
That intro was spectacular. I love this idea of unsolicited advice. 💥
Thanks Dice! I'm glad you think so.
Bruh if I uploaded one of my games you would tear me apart 😭
Do it!
That's how we get better at things! Engaging with (not just watching) people who are into immersive-style play. People like Crispy and Reactionary Principle Gaming.
37:11 Mother may I...
Yup. Sadly, it is far too common. Didn't come up as often in this game, but even good roleplayers can fall back into the habit.
Keep 'em coming!
Deal.
Good Advice, I believe the GM's was focused on moving the story forward, rather than bring the world to life.
You could be right about that Steve.
That was a gem of a game, imagine if they went full 4D!
Right?!
Great breakdown! We've certainly seen much worse run games. Kudo's to them that we only have a few nits to pick.
Thanks! It is refreshing to see a game like this where roleplaying isn't an afterthought.
@Tablerunner They are most of the way there. Usually I find AP's boring but I'm gonna have to watch them.
"Meeee... I never sollicited this unsollicited advice and I want you to know it!" mourns the second rate bitch bitching about bitchers.

This has some real wholesome approving dad vibes 😁a stark contrast to the exhausting matt colville video where it sounded like you lost all faith in humanity 😅
I'm sure that I'll have plenty of ranting videos in the future, but this one was a pleasant surprise!
Very good phasing
Michelle is the mvp, she seems to be trying to think as the minotaur would. top A practice
I agree completely. She was great.
Nice change of pace and was tons of fun to watch! Your advice can help any table! Appreciate all the hard work that goes into these 😎
Lots to like in this session.
Definitely refreshing to see some actual roleplaying while also getting your perspective on how to improve. Not perfect roleplaying, but nothing in life is ever perfect.
Here we goooo!
Let's go!
Crispy, have you already done an unsolicited advice for Critical Role? Do you plan to?
I've been asked by several to look at Critical Role. It is a different animal as it is much more performance-based; however, yes I will get to them at some point. Thanks for watching!
@@Tablerunner That sounds awesome! I modelled a lot of my GM style after Matt Mercer, so any advice from your critique to him would surely apply to me as well. Thanks for the great content! Cheers.
Thanks for watching and leaving a kind comment!
Let's go!
This was a blast last time!😊
This one will feel different from the last three I think.
@Tablerunner I swear Matt's game has everybody acting like they are having fun to sell it.
Some system has to use some meta mechanic of throwing stuff to see if a ranged effect hits or not. That 119 feet to meta game the 120 range is so stiff
Interesting.
