Pre-Restoration Inspection No.7: 1972 Lasko 2715 round cabinet Box fan

Another video from the stash that I totally forgot about until now haha. A 1972 Lasko round cabinet model 2715 box fan.
Finishing off a failed box fan motor
Просмотров 183Месяц назад
This motor came out of a Lasko 3733 from around 2012, I picked it up off the curb and ended up finding it had shorted turns in the windings. Figured I would have some fun with the motor before scrapping it since it was way past saving. And of course, the obligatory DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Anyways, hope y’all enjoy!

Next up from my lighting collection, this older national F6T5 fluorescent tube. Unfortunately, the exposure was kind of messed up on this video, so brightness warning for when I turn the tube on lol.

Yea what's the deal this is a really good old piece of technology my grandparents have a older one and it still works , although the dryer doesn't it's still cool to see quality over cheap junk ...lol, good luck with the grind😊
Really cool vintage washer, the mechanisms are neat too. I don't see many of those. I'm not sure why I don't see more comments on your videos , With really cool stuff you you should be getting more attention on this material. Well I'm sure your audience will grow as you keep going. I enjoyed the video and looking forward to more .
Re-uploaded because of a thumbnail error. This was a totally unexpected roadside find, sitting out front of a house with a sign that said “free works”! I’m presuming it’s from 1967 because it’s what I got from a presumed date code on the underside of the agitator, definitely let me know if somehow through serial number searches it’s different.
Do you think I can update by adding/wire in a humidity-temperature sensor on a Delonghi ex370 in order for the compressor to regulate in terms of more effectively provide cooler air per se or should I update to the compressor of the version which has both sensor and compressor?
I hope you can get that one fixed , if you do manage to get it going again your best bet would be to find a replacement front and back gaurd for it .
Good video of the Lasko 1970s box fan, I've seen these every where on this website but I vaguely remember seeing them in person , it's a long time if so. From what I've seen these are great preformers even though the gaurds are flimsy and you have to slide them in place. I like that color too definitely a signature retro color scheme of the 1970s era. I enjoyed the inspection and looking forward to the outcome of it .
That’s cool to hear you have memories of seeing those in person, this one is a round cabinet model so it makes it a lot more rare than the squared off ones. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!
Nice one , love these 4 bladers.
This thing sure does push some good air and it’s actually running as I write this comment. I hope to eventually get one of those Homart cooler whole house window fans as well. They seem to be somewhat common around here, it’s only a matter of time until one pops up at a good price. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnologicalHeritage I'm fond of these old window fans too. Yeah the Homart cooler has been on my want list for a long time . The availability on eBay isn't bad but they are too pricey , the closest one in my area is probably about 30 miles or so . One day I'll find one around here I can afford and I hope you will too .
Thank you, and best wishes to searching endeavors as well!
That one went pop!
It sure did give a good show before being sent to the great scrapyard in the sky!😂 Thanks for watching!
That rusted up window unit looks absolutely ancient
It is pretty old and it has one heck of a story behind it, I have a few videos on my channel of it and I recommend checking those out. It’s a wizard deluxe box fan. Thanks for watching!
Looks like it'd make a fantastic flail bludgeon lol
LOL although I will say this is probably a bit too fragile to use as one haha. Thanks for watching!
Isn't it disappointing to have a favorite box fan with a failing motor in it? I had this happen to me very rarely on fans that I pick up. I got a purple Lasko box fan 3 weeks ago that had a bad fuse in its plug, I put on a spare fused plug, and sure enough, after turning it on, the fuse died in the plug, so it was cause by its OG motor failing, so I had to finish it off.
Yeah, luckily, I’ve never really had that problem, this was just a random trash find that I don’t really have any attachment for, I have some replacement motors, and I’ll stick one in it no problem. Thanks for watching!
Man that thing was cooked! I find these motor burnout videos rather entertaining even though I've never done it before and have no intentions of starting now lol . The GE motor in my Lakewood X22 is likely a candidate for failure but I want to try my hand at rewinding it . I hope you had fun with the little bonfire there and I enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video!
Glad you enjoyed the show, it sure did give its all lol. Yeah I would like to try my hand at rewinding some motors at some point in the future as well. Thanks for watching!
I would just use a radiant heater to heat it up
Optimally from what I’ve seen you really want to keep the heat directed just to certain areas of the blade, but who knows maybe there are other methods that work better. Thanks for watching!
I prefer the slower ones
Yeah, the slower ones are definitely better than the modern really fast and noisy ones. Thanks for watching!
Hi. I'm wanting a supreme motor from that era and I see that you prefer the more powerful ones. I have a 2005 06 galaxy 4733 with the faster promoter in good condition and was wondering if you'd be interested in trading motors if I pay shipping both ways
I would like to keep this one that I have original, but they seem to be pretty common around where I am, I will keep you posted if I come across another one that has the motor you’re looking for. Then I would probably be willing to trade.
I understand. They aren't common where im at. Even the older fan itself is nearly impossible to find around here.
What? "Brass is falling apart, it's turning Copper color"; lol You jest. no offense, was ['push']? mark on shell? Cherish to Old. Not a collector, but I cringe. 11:33
Yes, brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. When brass becomes heavily oxidized, the zinc basically corrode out of the copper leaving just the copper which is extremely brittle. I also collect and restore antique watches so I do have a light touch. Better it in my hands than still rotting away in the basement where I found it for no one to ever see again. Thanks for watching.
This was huge help. I recently bought a 1980s d blade box fan and the blade has warped
Good to hear that this is obvious use to you folks! Since yours is an 80s model, the plastic is a bit thicker so as stated in the video you will probably need to process a few times to fully unwrap the blade. Thanks for watching!
That looks like a socket I removed from my cousin's house built in 1927. You may be dating it a bit early.
Outwardly, these “fat boy” paddle switch style light sockets stayed the same appearance wise for a good long while. That being said, this uses mica as an internal insulator, and also has its power rating stated in “candle power”. Both of which are reliable ways of accurately gauging the age of a light socket. Thanks for watching!
Dirt floor basement = cellar
Thank you, that’s what I meant haha. Thanks for watching!
Good find. That rotary switch knob looks like it could be bakelite if that helps to date it.
I’m pretty sure it’s actually a material that predates Bakelite, or if anything it’s a material other than it. In fact, the biggest clue this light socket ended up revealing to me after cleaning its casing is that instead of stating the power in watts, it stated “candle power” instead. Definitely very cool if you ask me. Thanks for watching!
I agree. Most Midea fans seem to be relatively well made, especially once you take them apart to see the internals. I think I used to have a Midea-made table fan from 2016 with that exact motor, and the build quality also got my nod of approval when I disassembled it out of curiosity lol. Unfortunately I’ve noticed that more recent Midea-made table fans have different motors that are riveted shut (at least the one I bought in around 2019). The rivets alone are red flags in my book
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s the motor they use pretty much universally throughout all of their standard fan models, at least the desk and stand fans. No surprise to hear they have declined in quality. Thanks for watching!
Midea products are better than the knockoffs. There are lookalikes that seem similar to the Midea motors but really they are lacking oil and they use steel bearings. Your bearings are made of bronze alloy material.
Oh yeah, for sure. Beforehand, I was used to just working on the crappy knock offs haha. Thanks for watching!
That one turned out really good too! It's now nicotine free lol, I hope that'll last a long time . I'm looking forward to more box fan tinker material from you. By the way I bought a 110 volt 4.4 amp Westinghouse motor off eBay and will be delivering tomorrow. That's going to be the motor transplant on one of my old box fans so that'll be next on my channel. I would also like to see another live streaming video too, you just have to do a set up on the settings to where the video won't go to private. I enjoyed the video bro.
Yeah, I did actually end up using it for a good couple months straight as the fan to dry off our shower curtain. It turned out pretty good. also, great to hear you got a replacement motor for your box fan, I just been kind of busy lately so I haven’t had time to watch those yet. I will eventually do a live stream at some point in the future, I don’t know quite when just because once again, I’ve been pretty busy lately. if I do decide to, I’ll probably make a community post beforehand. Thanks for watching!
Gasp fan!
You would definitely be gasping for air if you could smell how bad this fan smelled before I refurbished it. Thanks for watching!
oh yeah! this old girls right up my alley!
Hey, thanks for checking the video out! Yeah, this thing has a pretty mean startup sound, hopefully eventually get around to recording that, I have a backlog of videos I’ve been going through at the moment, hence the daily uploads😂
One of the reasons your fan might spin slower than normal is because i noticed when you gave a view of the motor, your fan uses an early ‘supreme’ branded motor. I had a lasko 3733 from the same year as yours with the same motor and the range in speeds were horrible and it was extremely slow on high. This motor has less copper in the windings than the other motors used and the windings are really short. I ended up intentionally killing the motor for fun lol
Hmmm that’s interesting. I’d say mine has a pretty decent range in speed and it does perform pretty well, correct me if I’m wrong, but these older fans also have a slightly steeper pitch blade. I have a video coming up actually I finish off a failed motor that had shorted windings, let me tell you it sure put off a smoke and firework show haha. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnologicalHeritage From my perspective the range in speeds are pretty small for a box fan. What i meant by short windings is the poles in the motor are physically shorter and smaller than others. I have a ‘glory’ motor and a ‘promotor’ from the same era and the windings are much beefier and they perform much better. That is true, these older lasko/galaxy fans have a thicker blade but i’m not sure if they have more pitch
Loving the tinker updates so far, keep them coming!
Thanks! These are all part of a rather big backlog of videos I’ve had, so I’ve just been getting them out daily to catch up haha. Eventually, the upload schedule will lessen up a bit and I’ll probably do one or more videos a week. I will say I like doing these a bit more over filming me actually working on something live oncamera, it’s just much easier. Although ideally, I’ll start integrating more live filmed videos of me working on stuff as time goes on. Thanks for watching!
The Galaxy box fan turned out great! Nice work on your project, it cleaned up well and runs as good as it looks. I have fond memories of those because they were a part of my adolescent hood . I can't wait to see more of your projects bro keep em coming!
Indeed, I am quite pleased of how it turned out, I’ve actually done even more work to it since this video’s filming a few months back. Now, my family never had one of these or really any fans that I actually vividly remember, but the fans I do remember seeing other peoples windows would have to be the Lakewood brace blades. I wasn’t really into fans then, but they just kind of stood out to me because of the brace. I would say actual childhood fans for me would be a Windsor P-23 and s-10 those belonged to some relatives of mine. Hopefully eventually, I’ll find some examples for my collection.
Youre my biggest fan
Thanks for watching!
Shocking that this fan works, just like my 2008 Galaxy that was in worser shape than yours, all mines needed was cleaning and a new frame since the previous frame was badly rusted.
Yeah, to be frankly honest, I was kind of shocked that this thing did not have a blown thermal fuse lol. Thanks for watching!
It’s amazing when stuff that’s in such nasty, pitiful condition still works! I don’t even want to know what this fan has been through to have its back side bending out yet it still runs without issue.
Yeah, not too shabby for a cheap modern (relatively speaking that is considering it’s basically 18 years old at this point, which is insane lol) box fan. I would be willing to bet it’s taken its fair share of tumbles, especially since it’s missing its feet. Thanks for watching!
That one's definitely a survivor, it's been through heck and back but that doesn't mean you can't pull her back together again! Being a cheaply made box fan it deserves a second chance at life after nearly 20 years . I enjoyed the video bro.
I totally agree! These first generation post recall models were pretty decent for what they were, I actually obtained a box for this one that has a price sticker on it for $10 (and that’s when it was new!) ! It’s pretty insane that what is basically just a slightly evolved (cheapened even more lol) version of this is practically becoming a vintage design. Thanks for watching!
Possibly it was left sitting outside for some time?
Oh yeah without a doubt lol. A lot of these cheap modern box fans just get absolutely thrashed. Thanks for watching!
I commend your Ingenuity and craftsmanship but for $18 you could have got a 4-foot LED shop light from Harbor Freight which would have been brighter add last 10 times longer than those fluorescent bulbs ever will
Indeed I could’ve, but I am a lighting enthusiast and fluorescent lighting is up there with my favorite lighting technologies. I light up the whole rest of the house with LEDs, the basement is the exception. May not be quite as efficient or “eco-friendly”, but at least in my opinion it’s a tad more exciting and works for what I need it for. I guess you could call it a passion project if you will haha. Thanks for watching!
Robbins and meyers fan was the best
It’s a really great fan, hence why I wall mounted it in my bedroom! It operates just about year-round. Thanks for watching!
The belt drive window fan is my favorite fan in this video. I love vintage fans with a thermostat and if they have pilot light I love them even more. This is a great video.
Yeah, that belt drive fan is very cool, it’s the first and only one I have! Those top-of-the-line box fans with thermostat and pilot lights are definitely up there as my favorite fans to collect for sure! Glad to see you enjoyed, and thanks for watching!
My method is to fully bend the blade so that the leading edge touches the rest of the blade. This way, not only does it fix the problem, but it will add several more years to the effect if not decades. Please review my video to find out how. Of course, don't do this if the blades are brittle or have been exposed in sunlight for extended periods of time. Not recommended to do it on the wagon wheel blades as I have none of that to test on.
Yup! I saw your video when it first came out. Your method definitely would work the best for the newer thinner D-blades. I think mine is definitely a bit more optimized, especially for the order thicker ones where you would definitely would have to heat them up. Thanks for watching and adding on!
@@TechnologicalHeritage I do believe, correct me if I am wrong, that because the newer D-blades are thinner that they are more susceptible to warpage than the older thicker blades. Anyway thanks for replying!
@@sccpsteveYeah I would say that sounds pretty spot on if you ask me. It will be interesting to see if the petal blades will be affected in the future.
This is a long and rambly video, it is not for those who are impatient. This is more of a general guide, if anything. Most of these blades do seem to warp in the same way, but they will all need their own little tweaks to get right. I do not claim any responsibility for irreversible damage done to blades, do this at your own risk, and use your judgment to decide if you should do this or not. I recommend if possible, using a real junk blade to practice on beforehand before attempting to repair ones that may have sentimental/important value. With that being said, I hope this is at least somewhat enjoyable and helpful to any viewers that happen across this video. I should also add, this is my first full length tutorial video, so it’s not really gonna be the best thing ever, so don’t judge too harshly haha.
This tutorial will be very helpful to many in the fan community I'm sure, Jordan U will be pleased to know SOMEBODY has finally demonstrated this lol. That is an unusual RMR motor there, it almost looks like the motor Edison used on their earlier products . Thanks for showing us this and I enjoyed the video bro.
Yeah, I hope it is of some assistance to folks out there, it’s not the best video but I did the best I could, I’m really not good at tutorials lol… and yes, you are right, it does look kind of similar to those Edison motors, of which I would like to get my hands on one at some point. Thanks for watching!
I thought you were turn them all on at the same time in that lay out lol Please do it
Oh, trust me, as some point I will, I have even more than what’s shown there haha. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnologicalHeritage you got it can't wait to see it
Buy an ac
lol the house I live in has central and I have a few window shakers as well, so I’m all good. Thanks for watching!
I will give you a vintage box fan in exchange for one of the recalled ones. I have been searching for a recalled unit for ages and really want to get one somehow.
Yeah, I’ve heard those recalled models seem to be rather sought after, although surprisingly, they seem to be kind of common where I am. As for right now, I would like to hang onto mine, although I’ll probably stumble upon some more in the future, and I would definitely consider a trade, although my only concern would be shipping. Thanks for watching!
Dang, you got so lucky with getting these vintage box fans in 3 days I really like the Galaxy box fan that I've been trying to track down for a long time, and I was wondering, are you willing to trade this fan to me? Or are you going to keep it.
As for now, I kind of would like to hang onto these, but they seem to be somewhat common around where I was surprisingly, so I might eventually get a couple more that I could trade in the future. Also, just uncertain about shipping and all that, so my apologies. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnologicalHeritage Alrighty
would you sell one of the 3733s and post it to the UK I really want to get one here lol
As of right now unfortunately, I don’t think that would be feasible. In fact, I can only accept payment in cash. Surprisingly though they seem to be somewhat common around here, I’ll keep you posted on if I’m ever able to possibly sell and ship one out, although that might not be for a while so my apologies. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnologicalHeritage Thank you, I bought one off ebay and they cancelled it saying unable to export I really want one just because itll be cool. Do lmk if you or anyone else yk can ship one. Thanks
Good haul on these box fans ! I'm glad you were able to save the Kmart, I believe they donated it instead of junking it because the motors on those are usually replaceable. I used to have Galaxy like that but I left it in my old location when I moved in late 2022. I just restored my 1960s Lakewood X 22 box fan it's beautiful now but unfortunately the motor is burned up I'm afraid... Good to see the C&H fan again lol, I just got mine fixed shes running wide open in my bedroom window this evening. I enjoyed the video and I'm looking forward to more bro!
That’s a dang shame to hear that your Lakewood burned up, those dang fireball motors I tell you. Yup, the C&H is still around, I have a few more projects I need to tackle and then I’ll get around to working on that one. Thanks for watching!
