Traditional Korean Ships and Vessels Part 2: The Age of Battleships
Просмотров 36 тыс.4 года назад
#Naval #History #Korea It is disputed among historians whether the turtleship was an ironclad. Arguments for the ironclad theory include: 1. The Japanese records state that the turtle ship was "covered in iron" 2. The Japanese in 1593 began to use iron plates on their ships in response to encountering the Korean navy, 1 year after seeing the turtle ships in combat. 3. The turtle ships were fire...

I liked this video, for sure. But i have to say that stating that firearms were in their infancy in the 18th century is probably a stretch. Didnt the strart deeing use in europe in the 14th century? And even earlier in asia?

When I said gunpowder weapons were in their infancy, I meant that they were less developed compared to post industrial era, and relied on slow muzzle loading muskets and cannons. In Northeast Asia, many soldiers still used bows and spears and cavalry archers alongside musket troops. Seeing a fully automatic volley gun would have been terrifying for the average soldier.

"Barbarian civilization" lmao those dudes are pretty strong and have a dynasty of themselves up North. The Koreans are the one in aggressive move by quickly expanded their territories to the North and killed many indigenous civilian of those dynasties/tribes there. That's why the Barbarian retaliated and the war literally dragged for thousand years because of Korean's aggressive expansion. However it should be noted that the Northern dynasty, or so called "barbarian" is no where weak as the Korean underestimated. They even made your Injo king of Joseon kneeled thrice and bowed nine times (Hong Taiji invasion to Korea Joseon), and were the first one to even effectively repelled the Japanese during their first campaign of Imijin war in Korea (the Jurchens). The Jurchens even offered to help Koreans to repel the Japanese, but the Korean was really sensitive to their pride and the reputation so they turned down the request in not so "polite" way of speaking. But I appreciate your view on the weapon and their characteristics used against "barbarian". Just want to remind that those "barbarians" are human and have an established social system and structure, and also civilized themselves.

Its used by people with perceived cultural superiority to other groups that doesn't subscribe to the same culture. They define who's a better person by comparing who follows the chinese culture better. Like how modern people define who's a better person by defining their principles, values, value to the community and/or their political beliefs. Lets not meddle with the terms and instead learn why such terms are used in the context.

Underrated video and underrated topic, I made a video about the Hussite War Wagon myself, but the Korean Geomcha is also super interesting to me. Also the fact that the Hussites used flails to hit the enemy over the wagon exactly like the Koreans did is also a fact that often goes over people's heads

People do not believe in the Sui Dynasty's more than a million troops. The reason is that we're trying to evaluate it from a reasonable point of view "How does the pre-modern country feed over a million soldiers? Then the country will collapse!!" Did you feed over a million soldiers? → didn't make it. Did the country collapse? → yes.

Watch the Trilogy! The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Hansan: Rising Dragon, and Noryang: Deadly Sea. Also read the book, Nanjung Ilgi: War Diary of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (it's in English). He is the world's greatest admiral who protected his country despite dealing with a weak country and imbecile king who almost tortured him to death. There would be no Korea without him. Loved the video!

Unfortunately, Joseon became a confucius country that focused on academic achievements and scholarships. If Joseon could remain as a country with a focus on the military development, it wouldn"t have been invaded by Japan. While Japanese Samurais were at war with each other for hundreds of years and then focused on expansion by modernization, Korean aristocrats were reading books and were involved in ongoing political wars. Most Joseon aristocrats spent time studying for the exams and sent dispute letters to their political enemies just like today, while Japanese were practicing slicing and chopping with their swords.
