I first learned about silverfish at the same time I did about springtails, another ancient kind of insect. This was decades ago, when I read the book printed to accompany Sir David Attenborough's TV series 'Life on Earth' ( that will tell you how long ago it was!). I saw my first silverfish about a decade or so later, on the bathroom floor of our family home. I managed to catch it and showed it to Mum, who reacted with absolute horror and told me to get rid of it. I never told her I released it back in the bathroom, where it scuttled under the bath!
