Went out for a New Years Eveving paddle with Sean Rowley from @paddlingadventuresradio
The water wasn't solid, the wind wasn't bad so what else to do on a new years eve day....go out for one last paddle of the year.

After 3 nights it was time to head out. So after a dessert for breakfast along with the mandatory coffee I packed my gear loaded the canoe and made for the launch to return to civilization....

After a dreary rainy day I was rewarded with a gorgeous day so I went out and explored the lake for a bit. I couldn't resist padding up to see a water falls up the river.

For my last 'summer' trip of the year I chose a simple paddle in on another Lake in Kawartha Highlands that I had not yet been to. From the parking lot it was a short ~190 meter portage to the launch. So for this trip I took my canoe (a H20 Prospector 16-4) instead of one of my kayaks. From there it was a short paddle to the site at just under 2 km.

Took part again for my the 4th time in the annual Canoe for Cancer event that runs from Big Chute to Port Severn on the Trent-Severn Waterway. This time I was accompanied by one of my friends and my father. Put them into my canoe (an H2O Prospector 16-4) while I drove my TRAK. Being able to put one in the trunk meant I didn't need to switch out the bars on my roof rack for a wider set to accomo...
2024 08 15 Missinaibi Lake to Whitefish Falls
Просмотров 734 месяца назад
After a day of relaxing at my campsite in the campground I was ready to go out and do some exploration of the lake. While I would have prefered paddling to Fairy Point and Reva Island to see the pictographs and the stand of old (350 years) trees. I knew I didn't have the energy for that so I opted instead to go see Whitefish Falls.

After 3 nights on Wakami Lake it was time to pack up and go MIssinaibi Lake PP. After paddling around Wakami Lake and pushing myself a bit hard my body was not a happy camper so I changed it up from back country on MIssinaibi to campground when I got there.

Toronto Harbour wandering TRAK but not lost

When I got a request to visit a customer for the end of the week I wasn't about to argue as it gave me an excuse to put this kayak into the company car and go for a paddle afterwork. This is one of the big reasons I added a TRAK to my fleet. Company vehicle without roof racks and policy not allowing me to modify company asset.

After a nice quite weekend it was time to pack up and head home. An uneventful paddle out on a lovely day was a great end cap for this trip with the nearly glass like water.

Fished the lake different areas but every evening we fished from the shore fairly close to the falls here. First time in 62 then again in 69, was listening to the Indianapolis 500 driving in from Chapleau. In 72 Outdoor Life had a story of two fellas in a canoe who were studying some native pictographs or whatever you call them, they were visible from the water, painted or however they were made up on rock walls along the shoreline. Then they ran into trouble, I believe a storm hit and they swamped, swam to shore, one fella drowned swimming, or just plain gave up hope. The other fella made it to shore, eventually he swam back out to the canoe that was drifting along the shore, he paddled back, took forever, was getting sick, throwing up, finally made it to the campground, and eventually a ranger or someone found him. We never saw a soul in two trips, well one local native dude with one arm who brought us a nice chopping block for firewood. Great fishing for walleyes, northerns and whitefish. We ate walleyes 3 times a day for a week and never got tired of them. Caught a few small brook trout in streams along the road to the lake.

Still plenty of larger fish in the lake these days. It was nice to read your story reminiscing on times past up there.

@@JonPaddles Seems like it was about 7 miles from the campground to the falls so you paddled pretty far that day. Where we fished on shore would have made a great campsite for a few days. We went through minnows like crazy, had to go back and forth to Chapleau regularly. Always saw a lot of moose on the road going in and out. Saw a lot of bears around the camp in fact the native guy told us to not leave stuff laying around or the bears would either eat it or drag it into the woods. They took the stuff from the fish cleaning station and dumped it into the lake because I imagine the bears would have had a party. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing your nice video too, brought back a lot of memories.

What kind of camera set up do you have? Is it like a helmet mounted GoPro or something? I'm trying to figure out a camera set up for myself for a trip to Norway (without my Trak... But I still plan on renting a kayak there.)

    • @JonPaddles

I was over a year however they have made a number of changes behind the scenes to improve delivery windows. People who ordered even before I did waited even longer. So it is a decreasing time frame for delivery.
