    I think that because gender and vocal expression are so closely linked to people’s identity that it’s natural for there to be some eagerness, maybe even a a little urgency for things to move along. For me having ease is key and things like mindfulness based stress management / reduction have been helpful.

    In another video you acknowledged the neurological demands of speaking in real life situations, which I thought was really great! You mentioned formulating what you want to say, while being aware of your pitch, resonance and intonation. The reason I appreciate this so much is because I think it really helps people to lighten up and not expect so much of themselves and to have a little compassion for all they are attempting to do. I find It's much better to practice without putting a lot of pressure and let go of the notion of perfection, although it much easier said that done!!

    I think your voice was most beautiful using the back resonance ! But back of the throat is important for belting, since that is where all the midrange frequencies are amplified 🧞‍♀

    • @oliviaflanigan5938
      @oliviaflanigan5938 Месяц назад

      Thank you so much! Good point - belting definitely doesn't come from the head register.

    • @Devi_Blitz
      @Devi_Blitz Месяц назад

      @@oliviaflanigan5938 Well that's NOT to say you can't get strong high notes ! In fact, all the resonators are important in amplification for the best tone - and for upper resonance, this will involve the nasal pharynx (therefore requiring a relaxed soft palate). But in order to avoid the risk of espousing data which is too advanced for anyone far from ready, the above comes from my own interpretation of data from resonance section of Jeannie Deva course materials - a section which would take any beginner 3 to 6 months to even get on to, since correct support must be properly integrated beforehand. (Feel free to delete this entire thread if you are only interested in promoting your own courses). But going on sensation alone is No indication that one is singing correctly, since all the sensations we feel during singing come about via changes in the blood supply - and any perceived changes in register have been proven to be stemming from changes in position of the vocal folds themselves. Moreover a note may contain overtones, however there is No such thing as an 'under' tone.

  • @mikeg1214
    @mikeg1214 Месяц назад

    Do you know of any songs to sing that can help train resonance? As a tenor and former choir boy, pitch isn't difficult but shaping the mouth to make a more feminine sound vs a josh groban-esque elongation of vowels seems to be rather hard.

    • @oliviaflanigan5938
      @oliviaflanigan5938 Месяц назад

      Hi! I think you can really work on resonance with any song. I would say it's easier to work on in more of your middle range. Anything too high might be tougher. That's a great point - it's hard to strike a balance between keeping the vowels open, but also creating a bit of a smaller space for that feminine sound. One exercise you could try is to breathe in on a "k" sound before you sing. It helps to lift the soft palate, which could help open things up without sacrificing your feminine sound. Hope this helps! :)

      @@oliviaflanigan5938 I started with singing! In the shower when I was younger - it's one of the signs of being trans that I looked back on. ☺️ The shift of skills to speech has been challenging - it almost feels like a different mode I go into, which is why I was worried about whether it had hindered my speech development. But I think there are other factors at play, such as being soft spoken, perhaps due to dysphoria! So as I gain confidence and also hear new vocal abilities, I think there's a positive feedback loop. I hope!

    Mullein is a good one I am currently using in the mornings. And had myself been taught about the mucous-inducing properties of dairy, via Jeannie Deva blog over a decade ago - but since starting on GnRH analogue injections I am finding that I am having to keep up with drinking 4 to 6 litres of water per day; and so I looked up if there were any kind of supplements which could aid in keeping hydrated. And apart from certain minerals, one type of food was mentioned which possesses hydrating properties even greater than water itself: that being dairy ! Therefore helpful in my own individual case - thus having evolved to consuming 100g block of cheese every day (sometimes right before my vocal exercises); however as I say, an AID in my particular case due to the medically-induced dehydration and No: definitely Not recommended for anyone 'normal' !

    I'm trying to feminize my voice to have fun playing video games, especially Valorant and CS. It's nice when other players have no idea that I'm a guy who plays with them. That makes me more confident and I'm sure my voice is passable. Also, there are D&D irl where you can choose a female character and do voice acting, That's harder cuz u have to speak for a long time. But it will definitely pay off in the future!

    There is a whole range of board and card games categorised as "social games" which generally involve a lot of talking and/or roleplay. I strongly recommend a great one called *Funemployed* where you each player takes turns to interview all the others for (often outlandish) jobs. What makes it really fun is that each candidate also has a series of (even more ridiculous) characteristic cards which generally make them a bad fit for the job. The fun is all in how the players struggle to turn their assigned flaws into something positive. For example the job may be "Dentist" and one player's characteristics might be "halitosis" and "completely blind". Somehow they have to turn this around. The player who argues their case in the interview most convincingly gets the job and wins the round. It's absolutely hilarious, and of course you can use all kinds of vocal expression - sometimes you have to!

      yes. I do most of my practice when I am walking the dog. She doesn't care to hear the same things over and over and talking with an unusual voice to your dog is generally expected. You can play with question tone, encouragement, admonishment the whole range of expression really.. "What have you found? A stick? Good girl. Good girl. Such a good girl aren't you? One I have picked up from Mental Health itself Drama Group: use of what I have since come to know of as the 'old days' telephone; ie. prior to invention of the actual telephone (landline that is, Not mobile - these Never existed prior to the 90's). But prior to invention of the telephone, it was common to have conversations and even arranging appointments at a distance - the air being magnetic and also connecting us all. But a good starting tip would be using a mirror as your 'psychic telephone'; then once getting used to it, trying without the mirror 🧞‍♀

      @@oliviaflanigan5938 I think you’re right. One thing I noticed when listening to and to other women is this way of inflecting when listing things. You do it a lot like when you’re sharing ideas for people at a holiday party or who might be around family members who aren’t very open to different gender expressions. It’s crazy how there’s this universal inflection women use! I think women’s voices may have evolved to appeal to infants. The sliding, the cooing, all these vocal expressions are received by the baby’s developing brain which help build a bond with the mother. Men’s vocal tracts were probably meant to intimidate other men in the hunter gatherer group structure.

    you look cis, but i'm curious if you're trans? only because i'm wondering if your knowledge comes from a more personal place of training your own voice, or if you're just a someone who has studied and mastered voice and decided to extend your knowledge to the trans community to help. if i'm out of line, no need to answer! thanks for all your videos.

      Hey! I'm a cis woman. My degrees are in vocal performance, and I've been teaching singing and gender affirming voice for over a decade. Thanks for checking in - I know that some people prefer to work with/learn from someone with lived experience. <3

      It's tough when you don't have your own space! Maybe you can practice when they're not around? Or is there another quiet space - a car, etc.?

    Not many people order food items with voice call anymore here. But it's interesting to try some time ^__^

    Hi I’m so sorry. For bothering you, but I have a condition called puberphonia and I am very insecure about my voice being low. I just wanted to say if you could help me with my voice because I feel like it’s not me!! ❤❤❤

      Hi Eli! My understanding is that Puberphonia results in a voice that is high, rather than low - it could be that we're talking about different conditions. I would encourage you to go to a speech pathologist who can help you work through this! Wishing you the best!
