Them germans certainly could build them, if it aint broke dont fix it, imagine what 4 of them grouped in the nose of a 110 or 401 zestroyer could acheive...even before the 103 jaboshreck was introduced...also they used 15mm version of it early on but then stuck it on a lightweight drilling mount that could be towed or transported on horse carts easily, usually for extra forward airbase defence as the 15mm lacked the punch and was becoming obsolete they still was fitted to 190 wing roots to save weight, with the 20mm version in underwing condollars plugged into the bomb release mechanisms and a 20mm or 30 more on 109's through its prop bose with 2 mg 17's, side by side on top cowling with a little tracer ammo to get on target for ground roles and night fighting...
This brought me into tears. One alloutte iii gunship played a huge roll in suppressing enemy power thus accelerated liberation of my country. This is gold
Pretty crazy seeing a WW2 German anti-aircraft cannon mounted on a French helicopter so long after. Even crazier is I do believe the Mg151 started out life on fighter planes and ended up on halftracks as well! Pretty versatile and long lived weapon I'd say
The person operating the 20mm was called the flight engineer and was definitely used in 17 Squadron Swartkops in VTH. Guys in the installation of the 200mm are Johnny De Villiers, Barries Badenhorst and Vaughn Killoch.
The application of the mg151 on the alouette III was tested and developed for Portuguese Air Force during the overseas war. In 1963 the sqdr canibais (canibal) and lobo mau (bad wolf) started to use it with great success.
A friend linked me to this video and it made me smile. It is a South African Air force training video. I know because I was the most junior Lt Pilot on the squadron and was ordered into my finest cameo role as squadron radio operator (sarcasm :) ) at 0:31 and 0:41. I think it was done about 1992 at 17/19 Squadron AFB Swartkops. Thanks for posting.
A truly surreal blend of the archetypal, internally-produced coma-inducing corporate training film uniquely combined with utterly compelling subject matter! Wish the many monotone training film's I've been forced to sit through in my career dealt with mounting a f^cking 20mm cannon to a helicopter! Should've gone into the defence industry instead I guess... ;)
Badly acted and with a total of four baddies why would you want air support?
The amateurish radio voice procedure was cringingly awful.
Wait, 4-5 guys are walking out in the open, you've got them covered with a machine gun, and you call in air support?
Maybe those guys in the open are the vanguard of a larger group.
Wonder they had/have minengeschoß rounds?
"Reliable. Easy to use. Easy to install..." They're selling autocannons like home appliances!

Nice one... it's a shame that this is not a complete version

Ya it was even used on a french tank as a commander kinda mg which is pretty cool, mg 151 was a pretty innovative cannon back in the day
Damn! That's seems a bit much but what the hell it had a great rate of fire but awfully big for that role I'd think.
@@lanceschaerer6875 its lighter than the M2, which can be found on many tanks
Also used on French “civilian” CV2 in Algeria search up G.A.H.N. 1
Pure gold.
K CAR Delux
surprised to see a world war 2 era cannon in use there
Now this mounted on a casspir is also insanely powerful.
0:43 yup. 5mins video. 😆😆😆😆
we called them "K-Cars"..
Hudson we need air support!
long live rhodesia
Soooo who’s going to volunteer to switch out the barrel while in flight
Lol. The lowest rank gets that honor.
Bakgat 👍👍👍
The narrator said something about a gunner... the SAAF didn't use those... well, not in Alo's!😁😁
Alos definitely had gunners

@@wayne6512 Flight Engineers - they operated the 20mm... I know, I was one!!
What a rare find! Great video
The only air support I saw in the ops area was a chopper coming to collect one of the troops to play rugby for the Sector!

Done earlier by France in Algeria.
@@sheriffofnotts3520 Incorrect. Portuguese were the first to use Alo’s as helicannon (helicanhão).
South African instruction movie?
yes
Great video.

@Berend Emanuel Not sure about the footage on the rest of the video but I was comfortably sitting in Pretoria reading from a script :)
Get this man an academy award
@@brucelaing2051 sorry to tell the news but the channel Berend Emanuel was terminated by fascist RUclips 😭😭😭

For real. If I'd had stuff as cool as a 20mm cannon I'd stayed awake during the torture of corporate films.
The music on this is also fire, let’s not lie 🔥🔥🔥🔥
