My husbands family moved here after katrina when we were teenagers. It wasnt only NOLA. It devistated northern areas. NOLAS devistation is because they decide to build in a literal fish bowl. That area shouldnt be inhabited.

If I bought that house, the balcony and the porch would’ve been the reasons. Sad that they weren’t able to restore them.😢

I don't remember Katrina because I was a baby since I was born in April of that year but apparently my mom was there with me to visit relatives a week before the hurricane and if we stayed there longer who knows what would've happened

I remember it very well. High schooler. We lost everything after we had 12ft of water in the house and tons of black mold. Ugh starting life over was hard but we are so thankful to be alive and having lived through it

1995 baby. I was in 4th grade. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. We watched the landfall coverage on the classroom TV as we did our first assignments the morning it hit. It was such an eerie fckng morning. Everything and everyone was so quiet. I remember raising my head every so often only to see my teacher nodding her head in disbelief with her hand on her chin as she silently stared at the radar on the TV. I remember seeing Katrina on the radar spinning so fast and ominously. “Unbelievable. Just Catastrophic” uttered the meteorologist. Katrina had made landfall 2 hours prior to this memory. She was causing carnage over New Orleans and there was nothing anyone could do anymore but wait. A few weeks later, several new transfer students showed up at our school. I was talking to my mom, “Hm..I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many new students in 1 week!” I came to find out they were from New Orleans. They either had cousins or close friends that went to my school. They had just lost everything. They were staying with family or friends in the area until they could get back on their feet. These students lived out the rest of their childhoods in Atlanta and some of them even went to my same high school too and graduated with me. There was no school, no job, no home to go back to. What are you supposed to do when your old life is completely nonexistent. Everyone around took good care of them and helped their families. They were part of us Georgians now, and whether they wanted to stay was on them..they chose to though. Our community was a family and they became part of it. Why rebuild and restructure your entire life twice. Their parents all eventually ended up moving into their own homes in the area, many even buying and owning, not renting which was amazing. One of those kids is even a doctor now, still in Atlanta. God bless em. I remember Katrina like it was yesterday. I’m almost 29 now. How has it been 19 years…is beyond me.

Unless you were there, there is no way to comprehend the horror after Katrina. Everyone who went through Katrina and its aftermath has PTSD. I feel so sorry for all those who have gone through Helene and Milton. Hurricanes are absolutely horrible, and the aftermath is devastating.

I was born two weeks before Katrina hit... this hits home. I thank God for protecting my family and me, even when four pine trees caved in our home, we were safely in my grandparents house a few miles away. One tree fell into mom and dad's bedroom and landed right where I would've been lying in my cradle. Praise God for his protection, hallelujah! 🙌
