Chloé Nwangwu categorizes branding models into two groups: classic branding frameworks and influence models. The classic branding frameworks focus on brand salience, equity, awareness, and distinctiveness. Their goal is to ensure a brand appears as part of a category, is memorable, and stands out enough to be considered in decision-making processes. These frameworks emphasize designing an image that signals belonging while maintaining a distinctive identity and are typically taught in business schools. On the other hand, influence models address cognitive biases that affect the recognition and valuation of individuals, particularly those from underrecognized groups. Key issues within these models include visibility biases, such as the authority gap (undermining authority), the reciprocity gap (undercompensating skills), and the ambition penalty (perceived as overbearing or too weak). Nwangwu's research finds that underrecognized individuals often struggle to achieve parity with peers despite using classic branding models due to these biases. She recommends that these individuals need different strategies to expand their sphere of influence, as cognitive biases lead to discriminatory attention allocation and mental shortcuts that disadvantage them. Nwangwu introduces the concept of the "invisibility blanket" to describe how societal training leads to the systematic overlooking of certain people, affecting their recognition, compensation, and authority. Her research highlights the need for underrecognized groups to employ strategies beyond traditional branding to counteract these deeply ingrained biases and achieve equitable recognition and success.
