Rant incoming I think Dragonball peaked soon after the Sayain saga. The charm of the original Dragonball series was the humour and loveable characters interlaced with some serious moments and quite a lot of world building. When Z came along it continued to build on the lore but with a slightly different flavour. Adding aliens into the mix and relying less on mysticism made everything feel a little more mechanical and less organic. The story was still good to be sure, especially during the final couple of battles with Frieza. But since then it's just felt like...I dunno. Arbitrary? The only people in the show who have any impact anymore are Goku and Vegeta. Just about all of the side characters in the show had real impact at some stage (like Tien and Krillin and even Yamcha) but now they just sit at the side and commentate on how awesome Goku and Vegeta are. It lost its spark a long time ago. I still like it for what it is but it's no longer the charming cartoon rendition of Journey to the West that it started out as. Now it relies so heavily on power scaling tropes that almost all of the original substance has been supplanted by the need to throw bigger and bigger enemies into the mix until it all becomes meaningless.

If you get characters from a saga into the prior saga, even the weakest tend to be insanely stronger than anyone there. DB power increases are insane.
