Give Big 2024 - Amara Helps Families Heal
When you support Amara, you put in motion a cascade of positive impact for families that can allow them to begin to heal from the traumatic effects of the child welfare system, or even help prevent involvement with the system to begin with. Amara wraps around families during some of the most difficult times of their lives, offering support, connection, healing, and hope. Together we can begin the change we need to see in the child welfare system. Thank you for joining us during Give Big 2024.

Amara - For Kids, Families & Community
Просмотров 205Год назад
-For so much of our history, Amara’s work has focused on supporting foster families as they parent children in foster care. Our foster caregivers are incredible. They do what sometimes seems impossible: they love children as their own while supporting their return home. And, if returning home is not possible, our families become amazing and open adoptive families. And - as the system has change...

Amara has launched several new programs to serve kids and families lately. One of the key “ingredients” in these new programs is the wisdom of people with lived experience. Their input infused each program so we could find ways to best serve kids and families, and ways to reduce possible barriers to reaching the programs in the first place. Community-centered program design can lead to programs...

Together they have cared for infants, young children, school-age kids, tweens and teens. Through it all, they’ve provided support, guidance, and plenty of love. Amara has been honored to walk alongside De...

    I really enjoyed this conversation. I watched it as I was doing research on a bill for increased financial support for kinship caregivers in Colorado. But I was disappointed at the lack of insight as to why foster and kinship home services differ so widely. This disparity in services, licensure, and support is a perfect example of those inequitable and punitive roots we see across the child welfare system (and many like yourselves are trying to change). I understand dollars often provide an obstacle to services/funding available, but why wouldn't dollars for kinship families given the evidence of better outcomes be prioritized over non-relative foster care? That question is rhetorical as the response couldn't possibly be based in evidence/logic. Resolving these disparities advances racial equity because the current practice was/is rooted in white supremacist practices, to begin with. I think we need more advocates that are willing to say these things directly and to shed light on how big-picture this in within a historical and societal context. There were even times where symptoms of this historical racism such as many kinship families being unwilling to interact with the welfare system, but there was no mention that this is the result of a tumultuous history that marginalized groups have with government services and oversight. I felt as though Trey was the only one who spoke clearly about these points which is unfortunate since he is the one who is not directly involved in the child welfare system. I know this critique is somewhat strongly worded. I did not want to risk mincing my words as I think this feedback is important and given with the intention of promoting reflection and growth.

    Thanks for sharing this! I aged out of foster care and worked for the agency for 13 years in many roles but the one that was near and dear to my heart was as a PRIDE Trainer teaching foster and adoptive parents the tools they needed for success. Your message was great and so necessary. We need more people of color Black and Hispanic that do it from their heart. These children need people who care because they can feel it.

    Thank you all for this wonderful, honest and hopeful presentation. As an adoptive parent and social worker, I’ve been a fan of Lori since reading her book in 2014, and have trained many families about openness in domestic infant adoption, but love the simplicity of this model! Awesome work you are doing at Amara!

    They are not saying that black kids need to be with black kids and white kids need to be with white kids etc. they are just saying that for kids go are already ripped from their families, it is even more of a shock when they are placed, not only with strangers. But people of a completely different culture. Who see the world completely different than they do and probably have no clue how they see they world. That's a lot on a kid.

    Amazing to see this organization center adoptees perspectives! Many adoption agencies tend to center the adoptive parents perspectives, and not the children’s or children’s genetic parents stories.

  • @socialbutrflie

    They need more good foster parents period. What race a family is should not matter in child placement. I'd be more concerned with the quality of the foster parents versus the "color" of the foster parents. It's society that creates the stigma that each race belongs with their own race. The whole experience is traumatic for children and the bottom line is foster children need to feel safe, loved and their needs met by all people that are involved in their lives.

    I ponder about the meaning of culture especially when it comes to the care of children. I understand that these kids realize that they are different but to what extent does the foster family deny their own culture? What exactly of the "black" culture do these children need? Is it just the music (that more white people listen to then anyone else). Does it boil down to a weave? Think these kids need should practice some gratefulness. These foster families take them in out of love (realizing there are exceptions to the rule). Yes - I think ALL cultures should take in kids.

      There’s more to black culture than hair and music. Raising black kids takes more than love and care. Parents have to teach these kids how to navigate the world as a black person due to racist policies and racist people in general. Other races don’t fully understand how to do that because they haven’t gone through the black experience. Being connected with your culture is a huge contribution to self esteem because that is one of the things that are a part of you. Culture isn’t just a tangible object but the way we operate as well(and no negative stereotypes don’t apply to that).

    • @TrackMusiq
      @TrackMusiq 4 года назад

      Summarising "black" culture down to music and weave is exactly why people with your mentality should stay far away from black children. You sound incredibly ignorant. Especially as you are referring to an ethnic group as a "culture".

    • @ginsu_pd
      @ginsu_pd 2 года назад

      I'll answer, identity is highly connected with spirituality and our higher selves. When there's that disconnect, trouble follows. Black people are about the most spiritually connected beings. There's the spiritual aspect, then there's the socio political aspect, that a black child needs to be conscious of in order for their survival.

    • @kevinfox869
      @kevinfox869 2 года назад

      It's important trust me. Culture is everything! The slave master broke use of are Culture and that when you lose your self. It's important that black foster kids know there Culture because they need to know how to navigate threw this world. Do research and learn and you will get a better understanding to your questions.
