I think base 8 or base 16 would have been best because it would have the convenience of compactness for typical day to day math yet also be very easy to convert to binary
Hi! Did you create a font for these numbers? I'm looking for one. Also: four bits is a nibble, right? Smart to turn "eight bits" (byte) into " l .... .... " Also: I'd love to see you dive into negative numbers. I think -1 should be represented as infinite "on" values, like a computer does. That way, any negative number is just one more than the inverted version of positive number. (6 = .... .||. and -6 = |||| |.|.) The sign "-" might be repurposed to mean "infinite times |", so -6 would become -.|. Note: every positive number starts with "|" and every negative number smaller than -1 has at least a . after its minus-sign. So you could omit the minus sign for numbers smaller than -2 (-1 could be written as simply a -, but -2 would be the same as 0) Fun fact: all mathematical operations would still work. At least, according to the computer I'm writing this on. How would you pronounce these negative numbers?
Counterpoint: long and short lines become ambiguous lines of medium length with bad enough handwriting. Maybe we should use dots instead of short lines? Or short horizontal lines?
20:15 you forgot about half finger counting, which makes base3 the best for finger counting as one finger can represent 3 values... Basically you're forgetting the fact that finger/hand counting can use different measures than just extended(1) or not (1)...... Examples of different counting methods: original french (which is forgotten by many but is the reason why french is base20, basically half-extension of finger), there's hebrew way (which allows to indicate values from 0 to 12 using one hand), mentioned korean way, Japanese way (similar to korean)... Finger counting isn't just about making subsets from set of fingers... it's about making subsets from set of noticeable features of human hand while also considering (so multiplying) the different states said features may be in (but limiting it to make one state be easily distinguished from other ones)

Binary finger counting la, I'm personally a fan of using my index finger and thumb for binary digits, and the remaining 3 fingers as a base 4 digit. That gets me up to 16 on one hand.
what would you name this writing system? we have "misalian seximal" maybe this could be called "stick binary" or something?

Regarding temps, 6 has quite a few surprising relationships with Fahrenheit - boiling point of water of 6^3 - 4 degF, freezing point of water is 6^2 - 4 degF, while celcius and fahrenheit crossoverpoint is -6^2 - 4 degF, which means the difference from freezing point is exactly double the square of 6. Here's a very strange equality relationship i discovered where 6 isn't the base but plays a central role : (8^6^4)^864 == 4^6^8 - cute isn't it.

ok sure fine decimal is worse than binary, but hear me out. mixing bases. (the 1st place to the 4th place is binary so 1000 is just normal binary, but then the 5th place can be decimal)
Mixed Bases Are Actually Good - But In A Very Different Way To The One You're Thinking. Simultaneous Use Of The Power of 2 Bases, Mainly Binary And Hexadecimal, Has Many Benefits.
mixed radix can be great but why on earth would you mix binary and decimal? it makes more sense to use powers of two, or if you want to do something a little weirder, use seximal (an actually good conventional base)
No, it's not the best way. It's only that for programmers and autists. No one intuitively counts in base 2.

Though it's the great way to do square roots by hand and also a really convenient way to do multiplication and division by hand, which is quite neat

Did you watch the video? The point is not even close to “everyone already counts in base” it actually is “base two is objectively better than base 10 and 6” with a sidenote of “it is too late to actually change it though” also, neither programmers nor autists count in base two dumbass.

I really like this video, and agree with all the points brought up, except that the system of short and tall vertical lines doesn't solve the digit length issue at all. I don't like the verbal system for binary either, it gets long very quickly. I made a system that basically uses mixed radix, using hexadecimal (or tessimal, as I call it to get rid of base 1010 centrism) digits up until the last 1-11 digits, where it switches to binary and quaternary. If I understand information theory correctly, this makes it equally informationally efficient, whilst also being far less strokes and far less digits. I'll post the document link as a reply as youtube often hides comments with links. edit: I watched this video again and understood even more this time, and am now considering if my system sucks because it removes the simplicity of factors and what not. like 11*101001 = 1111011. I don't know, maybe it's fine. It seems that binary is really great but ultimately really hard to use because the numbers get long quickly, and you get lost in a sea of zeroes and ones. it's hard to tell the difference between 10000 and 100000. With separators it becomes a little better, 10,0000 versus 1,0000, but that will still be a problem when you get to really large numbers. I wonder how binary can be represented well.

When it comes to the recurring fraction numbers, why not allow the symbol to be placed before the radix point? for example: r90. this would mean 90.90909090909...

Why are there no mentions of subtraction here? Subtraction is just as important as the other operations, and much more important than a square root. Ive been messing around with this sort of notation for binary, and subtraction just becomes unreasonable with borrowing like this. Something like 34-13, trivial in both seximal and decimal, is just cumbersome in binary.
Subtracting in binary is actually the same as adding, except by the 2's complement. To convert a number, you bit flip everthing until the least significant 1. Decimal also has the same thing called adding by 9s complement i think. (Look both of these up on youtube, i think there are good videos somewhere). Every base has a complement version, so subtracting is not needed. However, figuring out the complement takes forever in larger bases compared to binary (another binary dub). This is why computers dont need subtractors and only adders also. (They represent negative number through leading bit) Sry if formatted weird, on phone
Subtraction Is Addition Of Negative Numbers. Take Your Choice Of One's Or Two's Compliment And Go From There. You Can Also Go By Groups Once You Get Used To It.

8:17 Took a bit of work but I managed to decipher. Kinda diabolical using such similar characters for A and E. None of the OCRs I tried recognized the E character or a handful of others so I had to manually go over the OCRed result. I was surprised to learn the original comment said "con-langues."

there are a number of references and quips from Misali's videos present in this one, so one can infer that this isnt really spite, moreso banter, as these are coming from fans of theirs. Misali themself says in the Premiere live chat that they expect some flak for their poor communication skills in a better way to count, which they did get. as for the graph itself, and that whole chapter really, the information efficiency of the base has tangible benefits in conveying numerical information with the least amount of redundancy. for binary specifically, its so notable that it gives rise to the hidden bit convention, effectively adding a whole extra bit in the mantissas of floating points everywhere. its kinda hard to demonstrate the effect that information efficiency has, other than with graphs or a specific example, but as someone who has worked with some light decimal-based codes, let me say it is quite unkind. the powers of ten are so sparse and unwieldy, it really does lead to a certain amount of redundant information, just from the size of the digits alone

Also personally, "hex" said during a number already sounds like "reinterpret the number I just said to you as though its digits were hexadecimal," so how about the name "nyb" for XVI?

something like 80 million people speak turkish. and like 12 million more speaker hebrew. turkish has “l” and dotless “i” while sans-serif hebrew text also has multiple letters distinct only by line length.
The divisibility test for 7 in base 10 is based on 7² = 49. 7² + 1 = 5 × 10. From there, you take the last digit of your number, multiply it by 5 and add it to the rest of the original number. If the result is divisible by 7, then so is the original number. Because 5 + 2 =5-(-2)=7, a similar rule can be made by doubling the last digit and subtracting it off from the rest of the number.

I’m sorry but binary is a horrible choice in reality and for all practical purposes. For one thing, you correctly point out that the compactness of a number representation matters. I could write 255 or 11111111. Most, if not all, people would rather write 3 digits instead of 8. Secondly, don’t get me started on how much of a bad idea it is to model anything after “computers”. There’s no such thing as a single universal “computer” representation of numbers. Otherwise it wouldn’t be such a pain to talk to disparate systems or need encoding rules (BER, DER…). Thirdly, floating point numbers. We avoid their use as much as possible because of the inaccuracy of representing decimals in binary. Totally forget using floats if you write anything safety-critical. So, cool video but nope. Never ever ever ever ever. *cries in software engineering*

The "Size Problem", Which Is The Most Common Criticism To Binary (So Much That It Might As Well Be The Only Substantial Argument), Is Resolved Quite Easily By Using Hex And Having Shorthand For A Long String Of Zeroes. Binary, When Represented As The Video Describes, Generally Takes Up Only Slightly More Space Than Decimal. You Have To Consider Other Factors Than Just The Number Of Digits: There Are Only Two Possible Digits, Making Them Easier To Parse, And They Are Much Simpler, Making Them Faster To Write And Read. I Averaged IᶜᶜII'' (1.8) seconds For Writing 255 And I'ᶜᶜ'II' (2.4) seconds For Writing IIII IIII. The Difference Is Not Very Substantial. Again, Consider The Benefits Against This Size Negative And It Becomes A Lot Less Important, Especially When Considering Conversion To Hexadecimal If Space Is Needed. The Use Of The Repetition Radix Point Eliminates All Radix Point Inaccuracy.
