Durham DBC
Добавлен 5 фев 2023
This RUclips channel is provided to support the activities of the Durham Duplicate Bridge in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
Our games:
BBO
Tuesday afternoons, 3:30 pm, Eastern time
Face-to-face
Wednesday afternoons, 12:30 pm, Eastern time
I create and post a video analysis of 2-3 hands from each BBO game as a way to provide extra content for new to intermediate students. The videos are available for everyone, but they are also particularly useful for those who have played in the referenced game.
I use these videos to assist players who are new, up to intermediate, in learning the fundamental tools and tricks to play bridge well.
We have players from all over the world. If you are interested in playing in any of our games, feel free to contact me (Rob) at rghanly@gmail.com

Hi Lorenzo; I would like refer you to the information on my about RUclips page: "This RUclips channel is provided to support the activities of the Durham Duplicate Bridge in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. ... If you find the material putting you to sleep, then perhaps it is not for you. I am not going to present hands worthy of a national champion because that is not the purpose of this channel. Thank you for your feedback. Rob
I appreciate your hand recaps! Keep up the good work. Eric
I support bridge hands but all yours are "bunny" hands where the suits always break, the defenders always make favorable leads. Great for beginning players? In the real bridge world suits dont always break; dont always get the gift leads from defenders. Is the training for livinging room bridge or ACBL club?
Do you ever loose? I'm watching your videos for few weeks, and I never saw you loosing ;-)
Hand 16 can be made irrespective of position of S honours. - win H in dummy. - cash DK revealing bad break. - play Hearts discarding C from dummy. -play CA. -ruff a C in dummy. - come to hand with DA. -ruff CQ in dummy. -come to hand by DQ thereby drawing the last trump. -play S to dummy’s 10. - your RHO is end played.
Hi Rob, I found your vids. Great stuff
if you use serious 3nt...partner bid 4d and now you know partner doesn't have the ace of clubs.
I try not to include too many advanced conventions in these videos. I don't want to overwhelm beginner and intermediate players. Serious and Non-serious 3NT are fairly advanced. As a personal choice, I prefer non-serious 3NT. Both are a good addition to 2/1. Cheers, Rob
@@durhamdbc I get that - you want to stretch people though and get them out of their comfort zone.
re why transferring to hearts and bidding spades shows 55? What if you have an invitational 4522 hand and partner has say 3 hearts? 2344 max you want to be in 4 hearts.
Hi John; With a 4-card major, always start with Stayman. That includes all hands with 5-4-x-x and 6-4-x-x. If partner shows a 4-card major, you have found a fit. If partner bids 2D, denying a 4-card major, jump to 3 of your 5-card major to show 5-4 and game forcing (or bid 3 of your 4-card major if playing Smolen) With 5-5 in the majors, transfer to 2H and then bid 2S = invitational with 5-5 in the majors transfer to 2S, then bid 3H = game-forcing with 5-5 in the majors This approach is the "standard". You could create some other approach, but I have found this works just fine. Cheers, Rob
my opponents not so friendly
I like you explaining, it’s very clear; thanks 🎉
❤❤❤
Awsm - thx
❤❤❤
Not impressed. When you wake up to the 21st century and present private lessons in a classroom setting with a real whiteboard, you’ll look a lot less like the 70-year-old dork that you are that helped to ruin the game and make us younger players feel unwelcome.
club was discarded on #1
Great to see a defensive hand played!
thank you. that 2H rebid over the 1N response on the last hand was an eye opener!
In our club games the robot does not play the hand. You switch seats when the robot wins the contract.
What is the 499er game? Is it open to anyone?
I learn so much from your video's, thanks. When are these games played and under what name? Can you tell me in your next video?
Hands1 and 2 why didn't you claim after trick 5? Robot would have accepted in a flash.
Thanks from Thanet. A long way from Durham but thanks to RUclips I can watch,
Have a Good Holiday!
why are not all bridge deals like these??
Love the commentary on bidding and declarer play. Always concise and clear. How about some defense ?
Would 3c instead of 3nt mean a minimum, non-forcing, with 5 clubs on the first hand?
That is certainly a reasonable interpretation. It could even be a (3-2-2)-6 hand.
@@durhamdbc thanks. I guess without a very good 6-card club suit since we didn't rebid clubs earlier.
You had the beer card but didn't play out. Peter Hollands would never do that, haha.
your vlog is always clear and concise. that sets you apart.
#18 need to enter hand with a trump, not a club.
on the 1st hand (#6) isn't 2C checkback stayman? if you do not play this convention, why not? thank you
Why select the 1st hand for demo. Nothing much in it.
Nice video - is this Durham in the USA?
Hi John; Glad you like the video :) We are in Oshawa, which is in Durham Region, about an hour east of Toronto, Ontario. I've actually played in the Durham SC club a few years back. Nreat club with a great Italian restaurant in the area. Cheers, Rob
@@durhamdbc oh right - there is a Durham in the UK where I'm from.
Why not 4NT?
Opening 2C with 3 losers, but not being able to open at the 1 level with 4 losers doesn't seem very logical to me. I think that you should open 1D with your hand. Trying to count the points, you've got 7 high card points, at least 4 length points with the diamonds, and you've got a fit in diamonds, so you should be able to add 10 for the 2 voids. You've got pretty much 20 points here. The way the hand played out IMHO proves that you make 4S pretty much alone, just with the 3 spades of your partner.
Reverses normally show 16-18 and are forcing one round. Equally important the first suit is longer than the second.
Why not play smolen
1NT opposite partners overcall is plenty- Should show 9-12 , which is what you have.2NT should show 12-15.
Agree 3H Splinter. 4C bid is very encouraging. Just bid 6D now.
Why not open 4S ? You are within half a trick of the rule of 500 , if you are non-vulnerable.
Generous defence not cashing the 2nd Club...
