      Actually from what you’re describing it sounds like you’re doing it correctly! Your ribcage expanding outward plus your gut expanding fully inflates your lungs down to your diaphragm. It’s the chest moving that you want to try and avoid as that’s a shallow breath that only fills the top of your lungs. So keep on doing it how you’re doing it!

    Thank you. I like that your videos go straight to the point. You wouldn't believe (or you might) what a person wades through starting out. I credit you, Bill DeWees, and Nastasia Marquez for getting me going. You have the kind of calm, natural, mellow voice that I think must be doing GREAT for you, by the way. Can I ask a small question that for me right now is huge? I finally finished my recording space and it's way more than adequate, soundproofed against incoming noise, soundproofed inside for reflection, no equipment except my mic, interface, headphones, and a computer monitor inside... and I still hear a tiny hiss when I put on my headphones. Is this normal? Noise from the interface or headphones? Is my gain up too high? After all the work I've put in, it's driving me bananas.

    • @killervoicestudios3973
      @killervoicestudios3973 2 месяца назад

      First of all, thank you for the kind words! Being mentioned with DeWees and Marquez is high praise. As to your question, your gain might be a bit too high. (That kind of phantom mic noise drives me crazy too). It could also potentially be the cables or signal noise from the microphone. My mic levels fluctuate weirdly when I first turn it on sometimes but then everything calms down once it’s warmed up. Your best options is to test stuff out and try and determine which component (if any) is causing the hiss.

      @@killervoicestudios3973 Thanks, man! If I find anything of value, I'll pass it back here. So far I have three things: 1. Someone suggested unplugging the laptop and running on battery when recording. This DID cut about half of the hiss I was hearing. 2. I think the important question is: Am I hearing the hiss, or are the interface and DAW (Audacity is fine for me) hearing (and so recording) it too? If it's "cosmetic" and not being recorded, it's only an annoyance. 3. I'm still working on being SURE I'm reading my sound floor correctly, but I think I'm hitting between -60 & -50 decibels (and I'm not going to obsess over hitting -60); If this turns out to be the case, the hiss is almost definitely "cosmetic". Happy Voicing! :P

    • @killervoicestudios3973
      @killervoicestudios3973 4 месяца назад

      Sure! You don’t need that amount of time to complete those tasks per se, it’s just the deadlines you would set for yourself in that example. For recording, just record your narration in full and then for editing, go back and remove mistakes, run some minimal effects, and record any pickups as needed. Since there’s a lot of material to work through it can take some time, so it’s good to know the maximum amount of time you’re able to spend on each phase and still turn the book in on time. Hope that helps!

    Hi there! This is a great tutorial - I was so overwhelmed by how many options there were in Audacity but you simplified it beautifully! One question I had is that when editing voice clips by deleting the parts I don't want, I always seem to notice a pop or crackle noise where the room tone meets the "later" room tone, if that makes sense. I've tried crossfading to no avail - sometimes the crackles even increase once I crossfade. I think it has something to do with what you said about needing the two sections to be at the 0.0 mark. Do you have tips for what I should do?

    • @killervoicestudios3973
      @killervoicestudios3973 4 месяца назад

      Thanks, and great question! If there’s a continuous background noise-like a breath or a low hum-and you cut a part out of it, there’s the potential for a pop or click. The way I get around that is I try to preserve the “silences” and make my cuts right at the beginning of the word. Or, I copy/paste room tone from a separate file to fill the exact space I need. Basically, I try to avoid making a cut in the middle of a silence. If you’re editing within a spoken section, you definitely want to make sure the cut is at zero and at the same interval of repetition. My Audiobook Editing in Audacity video has a section where I do my best to explain the “rules” for doing that type of thing. It’s tricky. ruclips.net/video/igoLokoZEdM/видео.htmlsi=uFJ5I3b8gb9_lb9_

    It sounds like for editing recordings; the best way is to start with a "clean" recording. As quiet a room as possible and pronounce as best as you can. The editing features... just don't RELY on them, it seems. I just tried the normalize feature...What a difference from noise reduction for editing breaths. Much more natural. Do you have a video on adding in effects at the right time (wine glasses clinking or engine roaring)?

    • @killervoicestudios3973
      @killervoicestudios3973 6 месяцев назад

      You’ve pretty much nailed it. Nothing beats recording your voiceover as cleanly as possible up front to save yourself time and possible headaches down the line. Minimal editing is best whenever at all possible. I don’t have a video that covers sound effects yet, but that’s an interesting request. I might do that at some point. The next video coming up is about streamlining the editing process for audiobooks… a sort of continuation of things I talked about in this one.

    Great video! Tip, your personality is great, info is great, presentation is great- but your video presentation could use some work to look more professional, so you can get the attention your channel deserves! Get yourself a really nice looking set to record against, even a wall with bookshelves or action figures - something that looks polished Then make a polished thumbnail - this one looks so casual that it doesn’t give the impression of the real quality that this video contains. Thumbnail is like a resume in some ways, your first introduction to the viewer - it promises something, and hopes to invite interest, make it a good one! The title of this video is one specific question that’s unlikely to be googled - so maybe you could try this: What Voiceover Artists Need to Know about Making Their First Demo! Put clear text on the thumbnail, have an arrow point to you- text says, Professional Voiceover Artist This gives credibility, invites curiosity, and appeals to a specific audience - Newbies to voice over! Aiming your titles to be searchable by and to appeal to newbies to voiceover will be a good marketing tactic!

And you’re observant, in this video I’m pretty far from my mic but all the audio was recorded on my phone so I basically wasn’t using it haha. Normally I’m like 6 inches away from it. For some reason my audio 1 wont record. It goes to audio 2 and records on that track everytime. Any advice?

      That’s a strange one. It sounds like a conflict in settings with your recording device and Audacity, but the fact that it jumps straight to Audio 2 on its own is odd. I found this: bit.ly/44IOL4j which has some promising advice in the second comment. It’s possible the default Project Rate associated with your recording device differs from the one in Audacity. I would start there.

    Those are very good tips. I come from a technical background with no acting training. Thanks.

    I have been auditioning for 3 weeks, deleting my entire track when making a mistake and re-recording the whole thing! You’re the only VO professional who has shown me how to fix this!!! THANK YOOOUUU!

    You are great at tongue twisters! Thank you so much for this practical and informative video on warming up. I am brand new to voiceover and appreciate your help!

      Thank you! I love tongue twisters because they really strengthen your articulation. If I sound like I’m good at them it’s strictly because of practice 😅 Welcome to the world of voiceover! Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

    Good Tip! Being Italian, my whole family is very physically expressive when we speak. This will translate well into my demo reel. These little snippets of info are very valuable to a newbie like me. Keep them coming!

    If you are doing vo demos that are not audiobook demos, should they also be to ACX standards?

    • @killervoicestudios3973
      @killervoicestudios3973 11 месяцев назад

      No, I wouldn’t worry about it! ACX is really specific about levels and can make your audio sound flatter and louder. For anything else you’re better off altering only the bare minimum.

      @@killervoicestudios3973 Thank you so much. So just normalization and limiter. That makes thing easier and faster.
