Windsor Medals
Добавлен 27 мар 2022
Thanks for checking out my channel !! Whilst working in the Household Cavalry Regiment for 17 years and running a British Military medal mounting / e-commerce business, I often get asked many questions about medals & militaria.
So thought it would be a great idea to answer many of these questions via my youtube channel.
I hope to cover many subjects, including British Military medal information, how to information on military tailoring and all things British Army related. So hopefully will be a useful information channel on these subjects.
Thanks again for looking and please subscribe so you don't miss out on useful information.

Cleaning WW1 Trio Medals
Hi thanks for checking out this video on how to clean WW1 medals. However I discovered the medals were lacquered or two of them. Medals I’ve seen lacquered before always tarnish even after lacquering. So this video was an unplanned opportunity to look at the effects of laquered medals. In my opinion please be careful if considering lacquering medals as it leaves patchy stains on the medals. I never recommend lacquered medals if asked, medals are not designed for this process. Hope you enjoyed my video best regards.

Why do you not silver dip the BWM then polish. No black tarnish anywhere then. Perfect.
@@MrGrinch52 I moved away from silver dip as hard to find it now. Silvo wadding can make perfect too 👍
@ it is but it leaves that black around the features. I did all my silver then polish. Its worth it mate
Great video. Can I ask how you would clean bronze medals I have a WW1 mercantile marine medal that is really dirty and needs a clean. Thanks
@@n.jmilitaria1642 hi yes the silvo tarnish guard will be ok 👍
@ Great thanks for the reply 👍
@ no worries 👍
Thanks for another really enjoyable video. What is the ‘war’ medal made from? (I have my Great Uncles, and Great Grandfather’s), I have my GJM and am very careful when cleaning as I’ve seen some where the ‘gold’ has been worn off, which looks awful. Thanks, and keep posting! Duncan.
@@DuncanSelvester hi they have a lot of real silver content 👍
@ Is that the ‘gold’ coloured one? Thank you so much for getting black to me, I’m chuffed!
@@DuncanSelvester hi no the silver one the British war medal. The bronze one is the Star and the round one with ring suspension is the victory medal 👍
@ I hope you can feel my embarrassment! I know what I meant to write, but didn’t quite manage it. Of course I was referring to the victory medal (gold disc) sorry!
@ hi it’s bronze metal and shines up very light bright finish when cleaned
Just found your channel tonight when looking for info on how to do my own medal ribbons, great info on your channel thank you I sent an email asking about to put rosettes on and found this after Thank you again Trev
Hi, would you use this stitch to attach the rank badge to number 2 dress uniform? Iv seen you do the basting stitch throughtm the chevrons but not the felling. Thanks.
@@paulgladding2107 hi yes you can if you can not machine it on
@windsormedals ideal thanks. Where can I find the distance required between the chevrons and the crown for a staff sergeant badge please
@ I’ll do a video on it soon
@windsormedals that would be awesome thanks
Nice. Don't supposed you have a video on the new Ambulance LSGC Medal do you?
Exactly the same medals I'm about to clean..were my dads
Cadet forces adults with 5 years service also received this and other jubilee medals. Massive problem with the gold plate being polished off on these. I called the Royal Mint when I got mine and they advised not to polish it as it’s only got 2 microns of 22 carat gold plate on it.
Thought the raf have been told not to wear the kings crown yet. A family member of mine is in the raf and he can’t wear the kings crown on anything according to his regs
@@YourAverageGamer668 not sure we have sold lots of berets with kings crowns on..
What band?
G'day Paul, Very nicely done, and appreciate your time in explaining the medals and putting the video together. Thank you Digger! Hooroo!
Good morning. I have been enjoying your channel for some time now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. As a Canadian, I feel that I must state that the Silver Jubilee Medal for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada was and is different from the British medal, and this was a first in 1977. According to Wikipedia "The Canadian version has a number of differences, with the medal slightly thicker and the crown on the Queen's effigy more upright. The reverse has a distinct design, and bears a stylised maple leaf with CANADA above and the Royal Cypher below, flanked with the dates 1952 and 1977." From this point, I believe that it was and is important for Canada to have its own version of Royal Commemorative medals as we are celebrating the Canadian head of state, and we must respect both of our official languages.
@@christophestevenson1448 many thanks for the info ! 👍
Great video, thank you. What make and colour of thread do you use for RAF No1 uniform? in particular, for medal loops. thanks.
Hi I use Coats Moon Thread M0086 👍
My daughter´s been asked to secure the metal badge by sewing around it/the pouch. I can´t manage to make it tight enough to avoid the badge sliding out... any advice?
@@natachadeschamps-smith4701 hi I can do it for you if you want to send it..it should be secured enough without sewing however probably depends on the type of beret manufacture

Where does the Afghanistan ISAF medal go, does it go at the end after the LSGC? I have the following medals, NI, Non Art 5, Gulf 2, golden Jubilee, LSGC, ISAF and Afghanistan campaign medal. Thanks
Hi unfortunately the ISAF medal NATO one is not worn. As this would be two medals for the same operations, however I do notice when some services personnel leave they mount them up with there medals. On these sets it’s put after the OSM Afghanistan medal. However as I said it breaks the rules and should not be mounted this way…
“ Is the order of the british Emp”
Iam from India my great great grandfather own the 1914-1915medal 😊
I have this one too, nice To have all of the jubilee medals, bar the silver of course.
@@mguilbert143 yes not many people have the full set !!
Colour Serjeant not a Staff Sergeant.
See the British War Medal? I knew a number of WW1 veterans who could not wear that medal. Know why? They were so poor that they had melted their BWM's down and sold them as scrap silver. Yes, very true.
@@MrMoggyman yes true
Should you clean the patina off medals ?
Great stuff mate Cheers Mike
Thank you so much for making the How To videos. They guided me on how to re-ribbon my Dad's medals which I wore at the Battle of Arnhem Service of Remembrance at Oosterbeek this year. MANY THANKS Paul.
Old video I know but I have a question please? I have the medals I was awarded as a regular mounted as they were when I left 20+ years ago. A couple of years after I left I was mobilised as a reservist for an op tour to Bosnia. The tour overlapped the period when command changed from SFOR to EUFOR. When I left theatre I was given a EUFOR medal which I still have in the box but a couple of months after being demobbed I received through the post another EUFOR medal and the NATO Non Article 5 medal. I was always under the impression that we didn't double medal for the same tour yet I have seen photos of soldiers from 1 GREN GDS (The then bn in Bosnia, wearing both. As far as I'm aware this was their first and only tour in Bosnia). I have decided to finally get everything mounted but wanted to know weather I re-mount my old set and just add the EUFOR medal that I received at the end of the tour or add both the Non Article 5 and the EUFOR or just the Non Article 5 as this came first? Thanks.
@@demobbed688 usually only wear one medal for the same tour if 2 turn up.
I have nine medals on my rack. I want to put a set of beckets/medal loops onto my double-breasted blazer. It will be the same technique but where would you start to position the first loop; on the lepel? Then across the chest towards the sleeve?
@@seasoldier3902 yes 👍
Thanks a lot for this tutorial which is very helpful ! With this method, you do not need to go through the lining (inside the beret) with your needle and that's really fine ! I'll have to do the same to sew an eagle on a ww2 military cap replica. 👍
@@HarryCowl excellent 👍👍
Had my medals over 40 years and never got them mounted, have ordered the stuff they will be on display this year on Remembrance Day Thank you 🙏
@@ianpeake7711 excellent 👍
Thank you for this, wish I had seen it last year when a friend asked me to do his, I wouldn't be doing it again this year lol
After an initial cleaning of these medals, only warm soapy water and a very soft toothbrush should be used afterwards as continual use of abrasive wadding/brasso will wear down the detail of the medal once the detail is worn away there is no way to replace it. Alternatively the medals can be sprayed with hairspray after cleaning to seal them. Avoid getting any cleaning material, water, on original ribbon as the colors will run.
Hi great video. I'm ex forces now. I need to sew enough loops for a 5 medal width on my blazer and need to mount the medals above my regimental badge so it is still on display below the medals. Should I sew the 1st LH loop above the lapel or below?
@@Vivianoblivian best to lay your blazer on a table, then put your medals in right position then mark with chalk position of the loops 3 loops should be ok. Look on google veterans with medals to see best position hope this helps
@@windsormedals Thanks for the advice. I've done it now. I used waxed leather thread. I don't think my medals will ever fall off. 😉
Thank you so much. You have helped me put new ribbons on the WWI medals from my husband’s grandfather. I shall wear them (on the right hand side, of course) when selling poppies

How do you clean the uniform when you sew the ribbon to the uniform?
@@S.Rupsung just dry clean
G'day Paul. When I joined the RAF in 1963, I was issued with a brass button/medal cleaning stick. When a few years later I got my first GSM, I found the button stick was fantastic and slipped under the clasp etc to prevent the ribbon getting stained with cleaning agent. In that time I used DuraGlit. Not sure if it's still available in your part of the world. Great videos from you again. Cheers from OZ. Chris. 🦘😎

When did the Indiana Jones theme become a Veteran's Day march? I like it. Don't get me wrong. I'm just surprised.
I have first war medal sir.
Thanks for your videos Paul. They’re always interesting and helpful. I’ve done my own bits of tailoring from your tips. Little question, the LSGC is 36mm but does it have to horizontally centred with all others or do they all have to be in line at the bottom?
Is a brigadier a flag officer?
Yes as its technically a one star general majority of the worlds armies call the rank as brigadier general
Question about cutting the ribbon for ring/chevron medals. I didn’t see it in here but do you apply any glue or treat the ribbon in any way to prevent future fraying?
@@frntlyndrumr no because the cut is inside the chevron and you sew it at the top of the chevron
Thank you kindly for your video. I would like to add that His Majesty in Right of Canada has approved the Canadian design of the Coronation Medal (as it is different from that of the United Kingdom).
Look stunning bud
Very nice set of medals indeed. On the last medal, King Charles looks in the same direction as the queen. I thought that with a change of monarch, the direction would also change, like the coronation medal. Hmmmm perhaps I missed something?
Usually it’s an optional thing I believe. If you look at the King’s South Africa Medal and the British War Medal King George V and Edward VII’s effigy’s face the same way as each other. Hope that helps.
Interesting that this person was a regular officer then became a volunteer special after. Usually it’s the other way around. Very unusual indeed.
