With a title like "In Defence of Minas Tirith" I was expecting some arguments in favor of the city's existence.

The defense of Osgiliath is based around the bridges that could potentially bottle neck to orc forces. Also they would need to hold strong river crossings to be able to get their war machines and siege equipment across.
