This only works for multitimbral instruments that allow you to pan the output. I only have one synth that allows me to do that and there's no need to since it has more than just a stereo out anyway.
Absolutely
I think Espen is right about the fact that a lot of modern synths are VST´s in a box. That being said. If you give that box a lot of knobs and faders, then your potential for a fruitful hands-on experience will be stimulated in a way that a computer with software cannot. I think it is nice when synths can do something that a software VST cannot. That is where the knobs and faders come in but above all the truly analog synths.
Yes, you're right, it's all about the workflow and the knobs and faders, the experience you can never have with a plugin. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for your great DEMO!!I played the JT-4000 on the SH-4D. The SH-4D is excellent!!
@@hazigin_mucharinda thanks Mate!
I 100% agree. It's all about establishing a connection with the instrument. I recently got a D-50 too, and felt like a kid again on Christmas . This might be cheesy but I had a discussion with my piano teacher that our instruments are our pets. We establish that connection like a pet and take the time to maintain and service our instruments. I love coming home from a horrible day with customers yelling at me just being able to play and program my synths and escape to another world. I would never be able to compare that with a computer. I'm also a digital artist and am in school for a degree for Graphic Design. Artist mainly use digital art in photoshop on a Cintiq these days, but that will never ever replace a paper and pencil or a canvas and a brush. Feeling that connection with the line strokes on the paper. I feel there are a place for VST's and a place for hardware. I feel it's all about preference just like music. Some people prefer country and rap, some enjoy New age and pop. I feel like samplers like the Ensoniq Mirage, Roland S50, e-mu emax, Akai S1000 are relatively inexpensive ways to get samples from super high end synths but with a vintage flair and with having to stare at a computer screen. : )
@@mattkevin thank you for your detailed comment, I do really appreciate It.
Thanks for the review ! I'm not sure I understood the saving system: you can save the tones, the patterns, but is it possible to save the entire project with all the Tracks? It seems essential to me to be able to recall everything on stage
Absolutely. You save patterns, which contain tones and all the settings inside them
That is a great tip! You could also just use the SH-4d as your USB audio interface and send out a separate track for each of its parts. Admittedly that is only practical if you are using a DAW and not outboard hardware effects, but it may work for some people.
Absolutely, I made a vid about using the USB Port for sending audio to a DAW. In this video the focus is on a live situation, or if you want to process the straight audio without ADC / DAC conversion. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing! Simple and good, like all great recipes.
Thank you Mate!
When i try and play anything from oxi to sh4d, the sh4d displays "midi conmunication error", and "alert midi offline". Tried different cables. Have you ever experienced this?
Do you have the last firmware installed (1.03)?
Not sure what sh4d is on, oxi one is on 4.4.5. have it hooked up to my digitone now and can't get midi there either so wondering there's some setting that is screwing with it... Still poking around right now
@pxqify try to understand which instrument causes the glitch
@@malvinusmusic fixed, the "oxi split" was enabled on the oxi, which I guess disables it's midi output. Just got this things so work in progress!
@@pxqify great! Keep up the good work!

Great sounds
Thank you!
Cool. Looks like this will be my first synth for my dawless system. Is it also possible to set custom modulations, like have the LFO control the pitch, or the velocity modulate the cutoff?
Unfortunately I sold my Gaia 2 and don't remember. But I'm on the fence of buying It again, Who knows :-)... Thanks for stopping by!
Rolland better, naturally!!!
I’ve been away from this synth for a while and this was a great refresher. Thank you!
Thank you for stopping by!
can you put probability on trigs?
Yes, but you can only set the prob of that trig to be played (up to 100%), you haven't got the depth of an Elektron sequencer
I like both! 👍🏾 I think the Juno X sounds better as I’m sure was the intention. I missed having a full keyboard, it definitely helps when brain storming. I’m glad I did not have to choose between the two. I bought the JunoX before the SH was released.
It's a great pairing!
Synktakt has way better workflow Roland 4D has way better sound Personally i would pick Digitakt II and 4D. Highly versatile setup 📐.
Agree, I bought a Digitakt II as well and they perfectly pair together
I hook this up to my Roland MX-1 mixer
it is nice but a bit monotone, i think you should have others harmonic loops for varying, but it is nice...
Absolutely, it was just a little jam. Thanks for stopping by!
Great video! How do you go about saving projects and keeping track of the sounds you’re using from the SH-4d?
Saving SH-4d's patch Is a pain. I'll explain it in a next video. Thank you very much for stopping by!
At last some synthesizer music that is well......musical ! Nice jam which i really loved listening to.
Thank you so much!
Has there ever been an update ?
@snorrevonflake yep! The current is 1.03
Gracias!
Hey, the LD Deckards Blues Lead is from a sound pack I bought for the Iridium here: www.luftrum.com/luftrum25/ As for the way to save the four tracks it's a bit of a pain to control other gear via MIDI from the SH-4d, which is a bummer but that's it, we get what we get (and hope for the firmware update). Thanks for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic Thanks for the prompt reply! Yes, let's hope Roland provides the SD-4d that function in the future like I think Jupiter X or xm has with the 'Scenes´ scheme, maybe then I'll get one. I'll buy the Lufrum25 pack right away... also found their Free Field Recording interesting.
Record unquantized and more pcm samples acoustic guitar, violin, flute, and piano. Please 🙏 Roland
@@loubang100 thank you Mate!
how rdo i connect a usb midi controller, as I want to play the synths on a actual keybed instead of those tiny buttons to play chords. Thank you
Hey Mate, you have to hook both to an USB MIDI hub, I guess, but I haven't tried so far. Maybe soon I will and I will share the knowledge, keep sticking around, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic Thank you so much.
Do you need a usb drive to save scenes that you have created or can you just save the scene to the keyboard memory?
You can save the scene in the synth's itself
@@malvinusmusic thanks for the reply. I tried it before but I must’ve done something. I’ll figure it out. Thank you sir.
I can sadly assure you they do not care about end user requests.
@@earthhuman5448 how do you know It?
Would you be able to run the SH-4D's sequencer at the same time as the Oxi one for potentially five more sequences?
@@Xanaduum never tried so far but I think it's possible, I wanna try ASAP, thank you!
Sounds like the 80's 🙃 Working on something like Kraftwerk meets blues (bass part) and a hint of Japan/Anne Clarck 😅 The SH-4d is one of the most fun aand best purchases I made and reasonaly priced too 🤠
Yeah It reminds the 80s, you're right, and yes, SH-4d Is worth the price
I was going to say expand the PCM engine to include D50, JD800 and XV5080.
Thank you, I agree!
Keeping mine around just because it looks good on the desk, the presets are nice when I can find them to pass the time, got irritated with literally everything else about it, though I know there is more to this thing than I have the patience for.
The presets are very nice, and the ability to have four synth tracks plus rhythm is useful. I can live using it as a sound bank with an external sequencer, as it is aimed to, but I hope Roland will eventually release and update. Thanks for coming, cheers!
Silence from Roland? Is there no chance to adress another direct channel to Roland?
I know for sure that Roland is watching my videos, but I am not in touch with someone at Roland. I do believe they'll do what better matches their goals, unfortunately I don't know what they are...
Keep bumping into your videos 😅 Was wondering if the DX could do so but at half the price I think I go with the Keystep 37 (DIN midi in/out as CC). As for Reface had a look and listen to the CP, I'd prefer that over the DX in terms of sounds yet the midi capabilities make the DX a great option as well.
I agree, the video was meant for those who have a Reface and want to use it as a controller. If you're in the market for a controller, there are definetly Better options at a better price. Thanks for coming, always a pleasure!
Is it the same sequencer as in the Jupiter X?
Sorry I don't own the Jupiter X, so I can't tell you about it. Maybe in the future I Will test the Jupiter X, who know? Thanks for tuning in!
Sounds really nice. Are you happy with the Arturia keyboard? Thinking of getting Arturia or Akai, Arturia makes a better impression on me so far.
Hey Mate, Arturia is my go-to keyboard when it comes to play synths on my desktop. Akai has nice key-action as well, but I can't tell you which one tò buy, it's all about your preferences. Anyway, I use Arturia solely for the keys, I don't like/use It for the other features like arp or seq. Hope that helps, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic Grazie mille. It is just for desktop use on the SH-4d with maybe another purpose later on. Mini keys can be fine it is just a bit of getting used to. Becomming a desktop man 😅
Hey, do you know how to program drums onto certain sounds?
What do you mean?
@@malvinusmusic Sorry! was tired and clearly wasn't clear enough. You know how some sounds have drums that play when you play. is there a way to make your own?
@@ManOfJupiterMusic yes, watch the video where I show how. Check also: ruclips.net/video/6iJZP34WHBE/видео.htmlsi=ohJOCby5D4rasQFo
Great clip but how do you change the sounds? Lots of issues with the manual online I've read with the MSB LSG PROGRAM CHANGE but its not exactly working via Logic.
You can change only user sounds, not the factory sounds. More videos about it coming soon, thank you for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic Its incompatible with Logic Pro 11 & the one before it. I guess no refund. Can provide screen shot if need be. I'm using a Mac Mini M2 from 2023. Guesing no refund - will have to talk to my bank which is so frustrating.
One button recording
Thank you for stopping by!
The SH-4d was never meant to be a groove box, so the first 5 points become moot when using an external sequencer. I have a System 8, amazing synth, but you wouldn't catch me dead using it's sequencer. The last two are big ones though, what's the point of line in if not for running things through fx? Also why isn't there a set performance save option already? Seems weird
You are right, I often say SH-4D is not a groove box as well. I also made videos on controlling SH from external sequencer. But since it has groove box functions, why not have better ones? Thanks for your comment, really appreciated!
Hello , thx for the tips, but I do not understand the random process, could you explain pls ?
As you can see at 4:03, put some trigs (in the video I put them on 1, 5, 9 and 13) then go in the pattern edit menu (shift+pattern) and scroll to the play mode item where you (I go by heart, don't have the machine in front of me) can have forward, reverse, etc., select RANDOM and listen to the result. Thanks for stopping by!
@@malvinusmusic Thank you very much for your quick feedback.,Understood ! I'll try this soon. I thought that, as on other machines, it was possible to add random notes directly. . Thanks again for your videos which are a treasure trove to help us discover this machine.
I would love to have the ability to record the aux in via USB.
@@gordtanner8332 It would be great as well!
What about songmode?
It's a controversial issue. Some people ask for it, others wouldn't know what to do with it. But if there was, it would still be a useful thing, at least for some. Thanks for sharing!
Roland doesn't chase ghosts 😂They just badly remake their original classics and sell TR-808 themed sportswear. That said I own this device and I like it. All the things you mention would be welcome. Though for the requested software I think we'd be better off making our own in the community. I'm not quite sure they can offer the FX being used on the audio in, it might not go through the DSP.
A third-party editor/librarian would be great, but as far as I know there isn't one at the moment. What I'm hoping for isn't necessarily an update from Roland, but at least a formal response to these requests. Thanks for stopping by!
Nice review after the hype is over. Very nice Groovebox and the current price makes it a bargain since there is nothing comparable (MC-101 is loaded with sounds but a nightmare to work with).
@@Michel-r6m thank you Mate, I do love this machine, cheers!
@@malvinusmusic Am actually contemplating selling the TR-8s (CR-78!) and get an SH-4d (new). The TR-8s is great but in retrospect I'd gone for the SH (was not out when I bought the TR-8s). Had the MC-101 but didn't like the interface at all.
@user-jy3io4iz2p although I love SH-4d, TR-8s is a whole other things, I suggest to sleep on it
@@malvinusmusic Sure, I am thinking about it and looking at current used prices for thr TR-8s is what got me here 😅 Wish the MC-101 had the interface of the SH-4d. The real step back would be losing the CR-78, combined with 808 and 707 my favorites. What I do before even putting up for sale is use the item a bit and see if it I can live with it or let go. Bought the TR-8s few years ago when it was €579 so that makes it a little easier but that CR-78 🥲
An update... The SH-4d I want but keep the TR-8s at first and see how that works out. Thanks for the advice to have a sleep over it 🤠 You seem to be a more sensible than impulsive person. Saw you're from Italy (been to Ventimiglia, Como and Milano) and want to visit Toscane 😎 Grazie mille from Paesi Bassi 😃
Great video mate. It is yet another example of Roland not developing their platforms fully. I love their stuff - but they always seem to miss R&D and BETA testing feedback. Some of your ideas are probably more "nice to have" - but the first few are really needed.
@@ranzee I collected the wishes of the network, let's hope Roland listens to us this time, thanks!
Good video. You hit all the good spots. Also more PCM sounds. Tons more.
