    Hey, I really enjoy your videos and appreciate all the information you share. Just a little bit of background about the dipnet fishing at Sherar's Falls. The people of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have been fishing there since time immemorial. Their right to fish there was reserved in the Treaty of 1855 (which was prior to the founding of Oregon as a state). Since treaties are the supreme law of the land, those rights are not granted to them by the federal government or the state government, but rather reserved by the tribes as sovereign nations. In terms of it being immoral, the tribes have their own unwritten laws (Tamanwit) they follow about harvesting honorably, and under those laws all the fish flourished prior to the arrival of us settlers. The whole stretch of the Lower D that we love and enjoy is on the ceded (and some unceded) land of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, and we have them to thank for caring for the land and the water that we now share. I don't mean to be patronizing, but it's important to me that people know about who lived here first and continue to live here.

    • @droppin-floats
      @droppin-floats 4 дня назад

      Hey, thank you for the comment. I understand the point you are making. My personal opinion is it's immoral for anyone to be fishing there. I didn't question the legal right for natives and non-natives to be fishing there. I feel many laws are immoral and I have the right to feel that way. I don't know if we have the tribe to thank for caring for the Lower Deschutes. Currently, there is a big political issue involving the tribe and PGE. With the use of the mixing tower that is degrading the water quality. PGE is using (or paying for the use) of the tribes sovereign immunity to not abide by the clean water act. So one could make the argument we have the tribe to thank for the degrading water quality of the Lower Deschutes.

    • @dbagz.connect
      @dbagz.connect 2 месяца назад

      @@droppin-floats For me the rod is great fun - that is what I like about it. Small floats, small gear and good fun even with average trout - which is most of what one catches on a daily. I never used it with a Center-Pin though ... that may be the difference. I always had a tight-ish line from rod tip to float so I rarely missed fish. I also used 30lb braid - made the connection much nicer and casting better (I alsu used nice mono, but the braid was better) My drifts were also quite short ... between 20-60/75ft ... upstream a bit, reel in to keep the connection between rod tip and float, then slowly reel through the drift and once the float was looking like it was coming tight, flip the bale and let it run for another 20-30 ft. and then reel up.

    • @droppin-floats
      @droppin-floats 2 месяца назад

      @@dbagz.connect I bet you the braid is the difference.

    • @dbagz.connect
      @dbagz.connect 2 месяца назад

      @@droppin-floats Could be ... I tried both and enjoyed the braid much more than mono. But the spin reel may also be the ticket. It works just as well as a center pin (imho) for drifts. Maybe not as smooth, but smooth won't distract a trout. Your looking for quick coverage of an area - grid everything out in a 50-75ft. rectangle in front of you and hit all the rows (river direction).

Small creeks like that size 18 p Adam's or smaller, no dropper ever on small creek like that. And cast right into the fast stuff and let the fly do it's thing. Great vid! Your statement was correct, Candle Creek Campground is down river from Lower Bridge. That is the furthest North you can go on the west side of the Metolius without getting onto Warms Springs Reservation. The gate you drove to by Lower Bridge Campground is as far north as you can get on the east side without walking in. Candle Creek is on the west side of the Metolius and down river. The river travels north. You can walk from that gate to Candle Creek and carefully cross at Candle Creek and fish back up the other side as well. If you are ever around there again and want to fly fish, I'd be happy to show you around. I live in Sisters. I help instruct a class on fly rod building in our Sisters Go Fish Club starting in March if interested as well. Everything I fish the Metolius with are carbon rods I've built in the club.

    Got a question for you. Actually looking for a suggestion, I have fished for steelhead in Alaska but not here in Oregon. Now that I live here I need a suggestion on what rod, reel etc that I should buy. Fly rod, spinner etc. Can you help a retired 72 year old man out!

      The most versatile all around steelhead rod would be a 8ft 6in spinning or bait casting. Performance of the two is equal it comes down to your reel style preference. I would shoot for a 8-12lb or 6-15lb medium action in either style. What style of steelheading are you looking to do?

      I caught all my steelhead in alaska with fly rods. I just bught a 10 wt fly rod that I am going to try out. Only used spinner/bait casters for salmon and on the ocean. I think your style sounds great. Looks like you don't have to be an Orvis fly casting champion to fish.@@droppin-floats

      @@johnculbertson1963 I'm one of the lonely center pin fishermen in Oregon. It's in a world between fly fishing and conventional fishing.

    Nice fishing! I've been binge watching some of your videos today! I wish I could spend more time on the Deschutes, but my knees are so bad it's hard to get to the good holes.

      Glad you like them! I know a handful of sports that are easy access. That way you can get on the river.
