Mr. Keating is right, the academic careers keep us economic and intellectually, but the passion and the desire to live are what makes us open our eyes in the morning and we get up to fight for a new day. Without hope there is no faith, and without faith there will be no passion

What does he mean by "what will your verse be?"

    • @fondablaster

In the poem "O Me! O Life!", which Robin Williams (as John Keating) is quoting, Walt Whitman compares all of life as "the powerful play" and "you" (you... me... we... everyone) may "contribute a verse". Meaning, everything that WE do contributes to life... to this ongoing powerful play. Some may feel that they contribute very little... some contribute a great deal, but to a very select few... some contribute something massive that manages to touch generations worldwide. But whatever it is that we do, it affects others. The poem ends with "...The question, O me! so sad, recurring-What good amid these, O me, O life? /Answer./That you are here-that life exists and identity,/That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse." And then this amazing teacher blows these kids' minds. He uses this Whitman verse to explain to these students that anything and everything that they choose to do will, in some way, contribute... to society, to others in their circle, to their families, to a significant other, to business, to the arts, to... whatever it is that THEY choose. He's making sure that his students KNOW that they GET to choose. And his question is a rhetorical one. He's not looking for an answer in that moment. He's looking to all of them to think... to consider their options... to wonder, for themselves, HOW they may contribute to life's powerful play. He's asking them to consider HOW they may end up contributing a verse... and what that verse may be.

My verse is the end of the play. Why? Because I wield The Black Iron Spear....that is not Death....but rather the truth of this world as it stands apart from all others even from The Beginning that was life itself. My verse....pierces through thought-structure & what puts it into flow. My verse....cuts through the false-premise & warp. My verse....gives distinction to itself, from Everything. My verse....is the proof unto itself, by itself, for itself, of No Thing. My verse....ends with tears falling into oblivion, with your own silent screams echoing...."BE OK!" After *The Play* is over, the rest is hellish reality....& the memory of a miracle you must learn to recreate.

Your verse is not the last, as long as the days shall pass. No verse will ever be the last. I warn you good sir, your ending verse, it's quite perverse, but not yet done, for my verse, has final come. And this here verse will be anything but the last. If life has proven me anything. it is sure that nothing will ever last. Even if it's the ending. This now new beginning, is where it'll all come to pass. I’m sorry sir, but your ending verse, must not be the last. There is something to say, about the verses at play. For here I may say, For this wisdom has a way. It's troubling I say, for they never go away. For the play never ends, so that you may contribute a verse. What I propose is something that must be said. This world to me means more than you can see. For the things that are important, are the things that can’t be seen. As troubling as it may be, it's tearing me at the seams, for this never ends you see, theses endless verse indeed. For the statements, you claim, puts the play in disdain. It Just will not stay, surely not at bay. For as you can see. It means little to me, for all I can see is the wisdom that beams and all that gleams are a beauty unseen. Do you know what I mean? It's those verses that have yet to be. Wanting and waiting on the cusps of existence. At the edge of the universe. on the fringe of all being. So you see, it has yet to be. And you will know that is it far from over. Because eventually my verse will soon pass over. But the play will go on so that you may contribute a verse. Enough...
