I bet the biggest downside in one of these dogs in search & rescue is keeping people from running up on him and wanting to pet him. I had a guy jump out of the passenger side of a slow moving pick up truck and trot towards me and my dog at an outdoor theatre. And it was only a German shepard! ??? He started asking me all about her and was all over my dog. We got in my car and i smiled and rolled my window up. No to be mean, but he went about it all wrong. Jumped out of a moving vehicle! Who does that?

Always clean their food and water bowls in the house everyday. I am switching over to purified water for them. Also please keep your yard clean. Rodents will come at night to eat the dogs poop. Well rodents poop also after eating it or what they may of eaten previously. Our Bernese Mountain Dog, like all, love to sniff everything. As a puppy we went through the poop eating phase. Even to the point where she would stop to sniff and actually was eating rabbit poop. So we had, diharea up until our Vetranarian put her on this stuff called NO Poop where it's added to the food. How it works within a few days they want nothing to do with any sort of poop. Also NEVER let your Bernese Mountain Dog be in a area that Canadian Geese or Ducks congregate. That poop if injested will make your dog so sick and dehydrated that any water they will taste can kill them. Very important video

We have an 11 month old female Bernese Mountain Dog. Since 10 weeks old, she's been walked with just a regular collar . She is protective of the house and yard. Along with a 2 year old Field Spanile has been a perfect match Also praising and happy tone, she is a extremely calm Bernese Mountain Dog. She is our 3rd and daily brushing a must. She's 112 pounds and the only stubborn behavior is when she will just stop and sit and look around while on a walk. Especially when she sees the kids playing basketball, she wants to join in. I have found with the breed as long as you keep them including in all activities. Even if it's her just watching me from the deck as I garden, she loves.

To do that to a Bernese Mountain Dog is totally crappie owners. The ears are this way to protect the ears in the cold and snow from where they are from. They are inhumane and needs to be outlawed. And so many are done at home by idiots which can lead to infection and flat out extremely painful. For what to look cool, I think not.

You are right, these Bernese Cattle Dogs (Berner Sennenhund) are excellent pets, yet they have a very thick fur, bred to work outdoors in cold and snow as "Farms-Surroundings' Managers”; thus they may suffer from the heat indoors (pant and drool) seen their fur is very thick, unless you let them get regularly groomed off from their “under-wool” from youth on. - But why not consider too any of their three cousins? The Swiss-Great-Mountain-Dog (Grosse Schweizer Sennenhund) is of the same big size as the Bernese and same gentle character, also a good watchdog, but with a short fur; or then the smaller Appenzeller or Entlebucher Mountain Dogs (~Sennenhund), a bit more lively, ca. size of Border-Collies but a bit of heavier built. These three last have the fur not longer than a Dackel with little or no under-wool so they suit perfectly for indoors, fit for family life and family walks. Duly note, the big ones, as their build already suggest, are not apt for speedy long distances tracks. Important with all four breeds is to, as far as possible, NEVER-work with food-rewards: let food be neutral, eaten regularly in quietness, no hektic; thus from start separate clearly food and work-rewards, seen they love to play and have fun with people; because food-rewards may trigger them into begging and drooling without end, difficult to get rid off once it became (fast!) an habit. All four breeds grow "slow" and learn increasingly faster while the relationships deepen. All are excellent family dogs, gentle, affectionate, ever good for a heartily joke but do never lie to them nor break their trust, for it may never more possibly come to the same strength again; patient with children, wonderful baby sitters (although no parent will ever leave child & dog alone together), but also very sensitive: they don't cope well with harshness; they hate unjustice and unfair dealing wound for very long their delicate trust; they need a strong first invest in patience for they do learn very fast but-ONCE a lively trust-relationship has been established: of old they were farmers' dogs and they are born team-workers.
