An original song about Henry Blake, one of the first Lighthouse Keepers who served at the New Dungeness Spit Lighthouse on the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the late 1850s and 60s. The song tells the story of what history refers to as the "Dungeness Massacre" (additional info at www.historylink.org/File/5743), during which Lighthouse Keeper Henry Blake and his family protected a pregnant 17-year-ol...

Thanks My wife and can’t eat or can all that we are growing We give the rest to friends and neighbors
Nice. We do a little of that too :-)
Hi, not bad! Check out the kit I built mate full 5 piece drum kit I play with my feet Vids on my channel
Welcome to NC!
Thanks so much! We LOVE it!
Nice, how are you triggering the wood block?
Thanks! If you forward to about 2:26 at this video, you'll get a better idea of how I set up the whole rig. Hope this helps! ruclips.net/video/Dzxo6OqZX1w/видео.html
Where can I get the snare part (I have the bass drum kick)
Hey Jim -- if you word search "snare for inside cajon" you'll get lots of options. Here's the link to one from Walmart that looks like the ones I used. www.walmart.com/ip/Half-Design-Steel-Snare-Wire-40-Strand-Drum-Spring-for-Children-Snare-Cajon-Box-Drums/277547308?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101043412&adid=22222222222389124142_10001062788_1202866399005740_pla&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=75179256244214&wl4=pla-4578778785503184&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&wl10=Walmart&wl11=Online&wl12=277547308_10001062788&wl14=Wire%20snares%20for%20inside%20cajons&veh=sem&gclid=e456e482ffc9128573b182c1628d158b&gclsrc=3p.ds&msclkid=e456e482ffc9128573b182c1628d158b
Sounds great, love it!
Thanks so much! We had a real blast at the lighthouse and couldn’t recommend it more highly!
Great job . That's alot harder than people think . I play the bass drum on the Cajon and use a harmony pedal and that was hard enough lol.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the comment! (Are you any relation to... you know... him?)
Holy Moly, what a garden! Can't wait to see it all filled in. 😀
Thanks so much! We’ll definitely post a follow up 🤓
try a pitch fork or 10 prong fork in that mulch it'll be easier Great progress on the garden, that's beautiful!
Great call -- thanks for the advice and the kind comment!
Did you lay the cardboard on top of the plastic? I'm building raised beds around my shed and was going to line them in cardboard but wasn't sure if I should lay plastic down first or vice versa... thoughts?
Hi! We laid down the plastic a few weeks ago -- the idea is to essentially kill everything underneath it... grass, weeds, seeds, etc. Then we remove the plastic, lay down the cardboard, then the compost/manure, and then the wood chips. We tested a little area -- if you go to the 53 second mark in the video, it's in the upper right of the frame. There are three green rows of strawberries. The vid doesn't do justice to how well they're doing! I can't swear it's because of the cardboard method, but the lady from whom we originally purchased the strawberry plants did it this way, and the plants did great! We'll see how it works for other fruits and veggies this growing season. Good luck with your beds!!!
my god what a YARD i sure miss the space one can get in the south. but i also do love my cascade mountains and ocean too. Love what ya did!
Thank you! We LOVE the cascades too. A few weeks ago we spent some time in that part of the country on the New Dungeness Spit as volunteer lighthouse keepers. SO beautiful up there!
Thanks for this great idea. If I’m doing live performance using this setup, do I need like cajon with amp or something?
Thanks so much! Whether you need some amplification on the cajon depends on size and acoustics of venue. Just the box should do for coffee house type gig, but if your in a club or larger event space, you’ll probably want to mic it or look at buying a cajon with a built in mic. Have a ball!
@@thisislifesong313 Thanks. I actually ended up getting a cajon with build in pickup.
Awesome job! Really enjoyed that.
Thanks so much Amigo! Happy New Year, Dude!
You are fantastic!!!
Wow, thank you!
Woww.. i like it
Thank you 😊
Outstanding, sir! Been doing a lot of looking back lately for some reason. This song says it all.
Thanks so much, Patrick! I sure appreciate the kind comment. And I'm right with you on the "looking back" thing. Seems like Jordan Davis wrote a song that tells the story of exactly where I am in life :-)
Is this one you wrote?
Thanks for the like! Nope, I didn't write this one... but wish I did :-)
🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Cool, but difficult😅
Yep-gives me a whole new appreciation for drummers! 🤣
Hey, great job. Could you make a video on how you made that?
What are the pedals that you use? I would like to get the bass pedal and snare pedal that you have. Thanks.
Thanks! The bass pedal is a Latin Percussion 1501 Cajon Pedal, and the snare is just an entry level kick bass pedal for a typical drum kit. Hope you have some fun with this, and please post some vids of you using your rig when you get it set up :-)
Beautiful!! Great job, mate!
Cool 👍
Thanks!
This fork in the road will lead you to new and more wonderful things!!!!!
Thanks so much-REALLY looking forward to this “next chapter!”
For even less money you can get a drummer? ;)
Beautiful 🤩
Thanks so very much-I really appreciate the kind comment!
Wonderful voice. Very well done. Merry Christmas.
Thanks so much,
What a song ! 👏👏
Thanks so very much!
Beauty setup. I'm going to start fabbing this up asap. I went looking for kick/snare but the blocks are a brilliant addition. I'm usually on a cajon or on my guitar but never both. This is going to open up a whole new world for me.
Thanks! So glad you found the lil vid useful! Have fun!
Very cool indeed! Good job pulling it off. Would you mind letting us know what hardware you are using? I've seen a lot of the kick pedals but never seen one up high for the snare portion. And then what for the wood block? I've been thinking about how to incorporate some rhythm in my playing also so I'm exploring ideas. Thanks.
Hey Greg - thanks for the kind comments! Here's a link to another video that takes a much closer look at all the hardware. The bass kick is a Latin Percussion entry level. The Snare kick is just a cheap bass kick pedal mounted on a couple of inches of wood to give it the added height, and the wood block is a couple of acrylic wood blocks mounted on an embarrassingly makeshift contraption I made out of some scrap in my shed (LOL) but it sounds pretty good. Hope you find this helpful, Amigo! ruclips.net/video/Dzxo6OqZX1w/видео.html
Any chance you could update the links to buy this stuff? (Or just lost the name to search for) Looks like they are no longer good. I’m basically a one-man band in the church and need a drummer and don’t have one. Great video by the way.
Great vibe to this tune. Dig the harmonica!
sorry I didn’t reply sooner, but wanted to say thank you so much!
If only we had three legs.
Well we don't need "3 legs" for impressive foot drumming. What the guy showed in the video is cool, but I feel he's sort of missing out on what's possible with foot-only drumming. Sounds to me like he used each foot to play only 1 drum sound (I.E right foot only playing bass drum, for example, and left foot playing either snare drum or wood block, for example). While this does easily allow you to add percussion to the guitar playing, it glosses over the fact that it's actually possible to hit more than one pedal with just one foot (depending on your setup of course). For instance, instead of using only one foot for bass drum and only one foot for snare drum, you would instead use the toe of one foot for the bass drum, and the heel on the same foot for the snare drum. This means you could do something else with the toe and heel on the other foot: the heel could play the wood block while the toe could play something like a pedal-controlled tambourine or cymbal or something. This can sound so much more interesting than just a bass drum and either snare drum or wood block. Listen to a guy called Cam Cole for an example of what's really possible with foot drumming like this. It sounds damn impressive. And yet he's doing it all by himself, while also playing guitar and singing, with no other musicians!
Exactly the ideas I've been looking for, while putting together my one-woman-ukulele-band set up!
Does anyone have the lyrics to this song?
Hi Kirsty-happy to send them to you if you like :-).
@@thisislifesong313 yes please that would be lovely. How do you want to do that?
@@kirstylumb1847 you could send me an email at thisislifesong@gmail.com
Cool playing and DIY rigging! I'm an older guitar player and I've had a Cajon for a few years, that I didn't use much. It kinda hit me out of the blue that I could use a bass drum pedal with it. Got one last week. It's sooo fun to play. Hardest part for me is keeping the dynamics of the bass hit consistent. Also I didn't like the snare-ish sound from the cajon on the bass hit so I put felt between the wires and the drum surface to eliminate it. I want to get another pedal for another sound but need to check out where on the cajon to stirke to get a higher, tighter tone. To be continued....
I’d love to hear/see what you come up with!
This is great! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing!!
Today is 4 months since my husband died. I love this song! He died January 22, we would have been married 38 years on Feb 14, and we knew each other for 41 years. This song hit home on so many lines, but the one that sticks out the most to me ‘he told me I was pretty almost everyday’, because he did. Thank you for sharing this song.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I pray that time and love of family eventually replaces the pain of your loss with the warm memories of your lives together. Today your paths are parted but you will meet again in time. God bless and keep you, and I hope the song brings you some comfort.
Hello mare, how are you doing ?
@@thisislifesong313 it brings much comfort, thank you

Awesome job! Love this song. A thumbs up and subscribe from me! I tried the song too if you'd like to check it out. Keep rockin!
Thanks for sharing, exactly what I was searching for
I love this. I've been using the kick drum action for a while. I didn't even think about adding a snare, so kudos to you. Thank you.
Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy!
