The Mach E Files ep 001 - Introduction | We Bought an EV!
I’m not a Mach E owner… yet! Hopefully, in the next 6 months. Appreciate your perspectives.
Thanks for the report, Douglas. I'm close to crossing the 10K mark with my 2023 Mach-E, and this video is reassuring.
No car is flawless and the Mach-E has certainly had some issues, but overall I'm reading more and more good things from owners with higher miles. We're optimistic!
Only got mine in July, so behind almost everyone on the adapter. I got the one from A2Zev, and it has worked well for me so far. 2 round trips from MI to CO had me in for my 10K service already, but that has been the only service. I agree with you on V2L. That is the biggest miss with the Mach-E as far as I am concerned.
@@YeOldeTraveller wow, MI to CO…how is the charging infrastructure along that route? Up and down the coasts are plentiful but I’ve heard there are still gaps in the middle of the country. Great to hear you’re making the trip!
@@DouginaBoxster Coverage on I-80 from Ogallala, NE east is pretty good. The jump to Ogallala from Fort Morgan, CO is the long stretch. (From Wyoming, the jump from Cheyenne is the challenge, but a full battery was enough even at the high speeds and into a strong head wind.) The first trip was by way of OK on the way out, but that was also covered enough for the Mach-E. The issue now is more of speed and reliability. Even the long stretches have bailouts if needed. There are still gaps in the interior, but most can be handled with adequate planning. The biggest issue is the cost of DCFC vs the cost of gas in the middle of the country. For the Rally, the per miles cost can be up to 3x the per mile cost of the Ford Fusion it is replacing. For the more efficient trims, this would likely top out under 2x. Now, daily drives cost under half what the Fusion would cost, even with the current cheap prices.
@@YeOldeTraveller good news (mostly). Yeah, the costs for DCFC can be a problem. Here on the west coast it still beats anything but a really efficient gas car, but in states with cheaper gas I can see it being a deterrent. Small price to pay, IMO. Cheers!
Great video. Great car!
Thanks!
We are also thinking about becoming a 1 car household. I'm thinking about the Rivian R2 when it comes out. Seems like the perfect size, ground clearance, storage etc to be the only vehicle. Feel like we will be able to do everything we would ever want. Including some light offroading.
I think you're spot on with the R2. We're thinking about the R3 for a second car for Julie (she really prefers a smaller vehicle). IF we decide to get a second vehicle...
Your car tried to tell you to leave Tesla chargers and drive away. You didn’t listen, but you did turn off comments on that first video, so I suspect viewers agreed with your car.
Nice video highlighting the Superchargers! There’s been quite a few new stations along I-5 in the last year. I’d be curious to see your thoughts on the Seven Feathers station and PFJs that have recently opened, the next time you’re thru there.
Thanks! We'll try to remember those locations next time for sure. I like doing something "different" each time...
@ charging station restrooms is my bugbear. A surprising number of Tesla Superchargers have zero driver amenities and it drives me crazy.
Hello Douglas, would like to sponsor your channel with Oasis Amps App. You and your subscribers can earn commissions. Let me know🎉🎉🎉
Too bad the tesla chargers cost more generally
True, but we so rarely use them, it's ultimately a negligible difference.
@DouginaBoxster good for emergency use.
I have been waiting 11 months so far for my FREE Ford Tesla adapter.
Hello, we have a mobile phone holder here that is very suitable for math-e. I would like your help to evaluate it. Can I get your contact information?
Is this the standard range 2wd?
Extended range RWD.
@ thanks. I just got the ext range AWD and thinking ahead to possible road trips and frequency of stops.
@@kevinschwartz3242 Very cool. We have a hard time going more than 3 hours before we need a restroom break and a stretch, so about 200 miles is about as far as we like to go. Cheers!
Great video. I enjoyed it. As an owner of two Teslas and a GV60, I noticed that you do the same thing that we do with the GV60...always making sure that the charging has started before walking away. The horrendous experiences with the 3rd party charger reliability has made us so gun shy, even on the Tesla networks. In my Teslas, I just plug in the car and start walking to the restroom. No worries. Within 10s it's charging and my Tessie app confirms it.
From testing and all the research we'd done, we knew the Superchargers should work every time...we would have been very surprised if they didn't. The one thing that threw us a couple of times is not seeing the "blue ring of connection", but I'm guessing that's because we arrived at such a low state of charge more often...something else we wouldn't do at a non-Tesla charging station.
Definitely a lot more options to choose from now and into the future. I do the same thing by not being “that guy” and choose to stop at 12 or more stall sites whenever possible. The cool part of the v4 posts besides the longer cable is that they have integrated magic dock adapters. Just press and hold the button on the charging handle for about 2 seconds then push up and the adapter will release attached to the handle. No fuss, no muss.
Yeah we were so excited to have our adapters I kinda forgot about the built-in ones on the V4s.
@@DouginaBoxster I get that. Since they opened up the 20 stall v3 Magic Dock site right off the interstate exit, it's been a game changer. No more take a chance 6 stall EA five miles further in town when I need a 5 to 10 minute splash and dash worth of electrons.
I really enjoyed watching that . Thanks!
Thanks for enabling comments for this one. I’ve always enjoyed your videos.
Thanks, I'll try to remember to open comments on future videos.
Great content. Enjoyed the charger ratings!
Thanks!
Hi from up the road in Yakima. Just watched Ep016, but comments are off on that one. Found Ep016 quite enjoyable and informative. We are not part of the EV fam yet, in fact my wife is not really interested in spending the money for any car, to be honest. So, I'm having to be patient and cautiously persuasive. Looking at the Mach-E, VW ID4 and a handful of others, but sure liked the look of yours. Happy.... motoring, doesn't sound right.
Hi and thanks for the comments! I guess I should start turning comments on my videos... Your page looks interesting...I used to be an avid biker as a (much) younger man and often think of getting back to that. Of course now I just fear traffic and all those big heavy trucks. And yes, happy MOTORing! 😄

@@FawziBreidi thank you for the kind comment on the videos. I’m not really trying to grow a RUclips channel, and barely have time to make the videos much less keep up with comments, etc. but I am considering opening them up, if only for more interaction between RUclipsrs and viewers. Thanks for watching!
@@DouginaBoxster yes please do, you don't have to reply to all but comments help us also evaluate your content and maybe suggestions from others that you missed. It can be fun and mache is a niche, so derogatory comments won't be common. Keep up the good editing skills!
First just wanted to say thanks for making the Mach-E Files! In looking at different content when deciding to buy an EV, and specifically a MME, your videos gave me the most realistic picture of what it's actually like to own one. Now after having had my MME GT for just over a year, I couldn't be happier! I'd be interested in seeing how you keep your Mach-E so clean any shiny all of the time - how often do you wash it, what do you use, do you use a ceramic product or wax, etc. Thanks!
Hi Chris...I've been trying to get a video reply of these questions for some time but my summer schedule is unusually busy, so I thought I'd answer here for now... Thank you for the comments! I consider myself an EV advocate, but I'd be the first to say they're not for everybody. It doesn't help anybody to only show the good side of EVs...even though (for us) it truly is mostly "a good side". I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your MME GT! When we bought ours, a Premium was about all we could afford, and we're very happy with it, but I'll admit I miss having something that "goes like stink" every once in a while. I hope yours brings you many miles of smiles! As for your question...first of all, thanks for the kind comments, but I assure you our car DOES get dirty. But at the same time, probably not as dirty as it would if we lived in any number of other places. Here in the PNW we have very temperate weather...and we live in the "valley" where we get very little snow. Our winters are mostly 40 degrees and rain. And ODOT rarely puts down any kind of salt on the roads. This helps to keep any car pretty clean overall (or at least easy to do a quick clean on it). Oh, and our summers are gorgeous...rarely with rain at all. So we wash it a few times throughout the Spring and it stays pretty clean over the summer...when it almost only needs a "dusting". We don't do anything to complicated with washing, we have a foamer and pretty much just foam the car, run a clean wash mitt or two over it, and rinse. If you check out ep 002 of The Mach-E Files, you'll see us in action at the very begging of the video. It really is just that simple. The rest is all due compliments to Ford's Rapid Red paint color...it really glows in the sunshine and can hide a thin layer of dust or pollen pretty well...especially from 10' away where the camera is. Thanks for the question! Cheers, Doug
Just stumbled across your channel and have been going through your videos. Great stuff! Still on the fence, on buying an EV. Question: I have heard through other videos that using the heat in the winter puts a hit on your milage / battery %. Is it safe to assume that the A/C and Radio do the same thing? I enjoy traveling down the road blasting the heat/AC as well as the radio at obscene volumes....am I gonna just kill the whole battery in one trip? Any idea how much battery these things use? Question: I know that every state is different but, what's the annual license plate inspection like? I have to guess that an emissions test would be kind of a waste of time so, is it just safety inspection? Question: Do you know, do they make an outdoor home charging unit? I don't currently have a garage to park in, so any kind of home charger would need to be weather tight. Question: I travel 80 miles or so round trip, back and forth to work...3 days a week. Would that leave me battery to charge on the weekends, or would it be better to charge mid-week? Last one: "Life with my Mach E would be SO much better, if Ford would just ____________!" Gonna go back and do a few more videos. Wes
Hi Wes....I've been trying to get a video reply of these questions for some time but my summer schedule is unusually busy, so I thought I'd answer here for now... First impression is it looks like you're an excellent candidate for an EV, so thanks for the great questions! RE: Heat and range loss...yes, for sure needing to use heat will reduce range, as will AC (although I think heat uses a little more, depending on your heat source...look for an EV with a heat pump for best efficiency). How much loss depends on how cold the weather is. Here in the PNW we don't get REALLY cold very often...barely at all, actually...so our 40-50 degree winters only knock our range down roughly 10-20%. If you're talking Minnesota cold winters, then you could suffer a 30-40% range loss. If you live an a cold area, be sure to get a car with heated seats as those use less energy than heating the whole cabin. There are even some EVs that offer a "driver only" setting in the HVAC to just keep the driver cozy. Using the radio is minimal use on the battery...like literally 1% minimal. Same for charging your phone. Frankly your speed will have a greater influence on range than any of the accessories like that. RE: license plates...here in the greater Portland, OR area we have "E-check" where gas cars must have their emissions checked every couple of years for renewal. Pretty sure we have nothing for the Mach-E. The dealer took care of our initial plating and I'm pretty sure we just renewed our plates through the mail. I don't know about other states (if they have whole car safety checks, for example), but I doubt anybody worries about emissions on an EV. Easy! RE: exterior home charging units...yes, for sure most (possibly all?) charging units can be used outside. Check out Tom Moloughney's "State of Charge" RUclips channel...he has comprehensive reviews of most chargers...a lot of great info there! RE: 80 miles 3x a week...so this depends on a few things. In good weather, with a 300 mile range car like our Mach-E, we could make that commute easily...it's pretty simple math. In a Minnesota winter...I'd be charging at least once during the week as well...maybe even twice just for safety. But that's kinda the beauty of an EV...you just plug it in when you get home and it's fully ready to go the next day. On this same topic, something you might want to look into is a cost per mile calculator and apply it to this same commute you're talking about. If you're going over 200 miles a week, depending on how much your electricity costs, you could be saving SIGNIFICANT money every month. For example, we calculated that, when charging at home, our per mile cost on the Mach-E was 1/5 that of our 30 MPG Subaru Impreza. Even when we traveled and paid the more expensive fast charging rates, our cost was still half. It adds up pretty quickly! RE: last one....hmmm...EV ownership really is pretty easy overall, at least for us and our situation. I would say the biggest thing Ford could have done to make everything better / easier would have been to invest in their own charging infrastructure like Tesla did. The good thing is, now that they're partnering with Tesla, road trips just got a lot easier. Still, more players in the infrastructure game could only help. But for local / regional traveling, it doesn't get much easier. I would say the same about most EVs, especially ones with high 250+ mile range. Really all of our gripes about our Mach-E are glitch related...there's a lot of "tech" in EVs and sometimes the software can be a bit "buggy". But we also get over the air updates that mostly fix everything in time. Knock on wood none of these glitches has left us stranded in any way, so we've just learned to live with them. Thanks again for the great questions...for sure keep up with the research here on RUclips, there are a lot of great channels with good info. If you do go down the EV route, I hope it brings you many miles of cheap and trouble free motoring! Cheers, Doug
