I can tell you this....EVEN IF THE MODELER doesn't operate their layout in DCC, this Locomotive in regular "DC" starts off REALISTICALLY SLOW, and LIBRARY quiet, all the lights work, the number boards light up...even when you go into reverse, the Numberboards still light up front, (the Front headlight goes off) but the Rear Headlight is on, and so are the Ditchlights! Perfect! I love mine, which is one of the later CP Locomotives. For my layout, I personally use a DC Hand-Held Throttle, made by, "Dallee Electronics" that allows realistically smooth starts and braking! Let's face fact here...there are still a great number of Modelers out there (such as I) who aren't wired into DCC, but now many Manufacturers are beginning to realize that too...and are, "Stepping Up Their Game" with those who aren't into DCC! They have to offer more, "DCC READY" should later on down the road the Modeler may want to switch over! I read a little while back an HO Modeler had commented on another one of the now many, "Testing" Sites on You Tube that do reviews on Locomotives and such that said..."If you are ordering an expensive HO Model Locomotives without DCC, you MIGHT as well not order one, period!" My take on that is, that is YOUR OPINION...you aren't in my Wallet, you DON'T work my Job everday, and YOU don't tell me how and what to spend my MONEY on! In short, put your OPINIONS back in your pants! Anyway, the ONLY true reason I didn't buy a Second One of these Locomotives is because last October I bought another Bowser SD40-2 in the newer, "Golden Rodent" Canadian Pacific Paint Scheme, and it runs together with this one with NO IN FIGHTING BETWEEN LOCOMOTIVES...they run as smooth as silk together! Scaletrains, Athearn, and a number of others as I've mentioned are understanding much better that many of us are still content with DC, and the Market Is Still Out There for those who want to go BEYOND the old, Tyco, Life Like, etc. (I still know a few HO Modelers who loves their Tyco Trains) and have you looked recently, EVEN BACHMANN OF Philadelphia have now upped their offerings too! More realistic paint and Lettering! And, instead of "Molded Into the Plastic" Grab Irons, they are now offering "WIRE" ones that are already applied onto the Model! By the way, that's a great layout you have testing those Loocmotives! I bought my SD30C-ECO from my friends over across the Border in St. Thomas, Ontario from Railway City Hobbies...they make it an effort to get to know their buyers, ship fast by UPS, and always have what you need in stock!😄
