This Weird House #13 - Andrew Najberg
Andrew Najberg is the incredibly talented author of the novel Gollitok (which it also a part of the 2024 Indie Brawl!) and the peotry collection The Goats Have Taken Over the Barracks, and he's got a whole list of forthcoming horror works coming out in the next couple years through a variety of publishers. He's also a very cool dude who is a great hang, a wealth of knowledge of writing, and someone I won't be mad about making it further in the Brawl than I do.

    I don’t quite understand still the authors motivation for writing this story. I came to this interview after finishing it because I just wanted to get what was going through the authors mind when they finished this story and I’m still completely stumped. This was recommended by so many people and I ended up wasting 3 hours of my life listening to some interesting buildup for a complete batshit insane, nonsensical ending. Not only is it just gross for no reason, the worst part is it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. This story seems to be praised for its "realism" and good writing whilst not being too edgy, but I truly cannot understand how anyone can say that if they think about it for more than 15 minutes. The logistics alone of the operation make no sense especially for a Missouri town in the 1950/60s? Idk sorry for the hate I’m just confused and baffled that this story that was recommended to me for so long and is probably one of the worst I’ve read.

    The reason this amazing story has not been adapted into a screenplay, is because Hollywood is obviously overloaded with other brilliant ideas. Let me elaborate... Hollywood turds, I mean people, would much rather pump out remakes of classics and call it "new" because it's an all female cast! Or, continue to remake other classic/popular movies with a new "twist"! Or, there's always a new comic book origin story or sequel to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at! CGI, right!!!??? Who doesn't want to see Ghostbusters with an all female cast?! I hope they start remaking other classic movies the same way! 🤔 Hmmm...Oh! Got it! They should redo "The Godfather" and keep it pretty much the same, but call it "The GodMOTHER" and maybe Jenny McCarthy can play the lead!!! Or...They should redo "Jaws" and have "Chief Brody" be the wife! Her husband will be a stay at home dad as she goes out with a hot female shark hunter to snuff out the nefarious great white shark of nightmares!!! See! Hollywood is waaaay too busy to try and put out something new. Borassca as a live action film or series? Pfft. Waste of time. (So difficult to get snide sarcasm across in text mode, but I took a stab at it.😉) *FYI: THIS IS MEANT TO BE FUNNY. I AM NOT TRYING TO MAKE ANY POLITICAL OR GENDER STATEMENTS.🤷*

    I first read this creepypasta when I was 21 entirely an adult and it was effective. Notably it wasn't a version with theistic satanism Mr Bear in the version I read he was just a misanthrope and sadist. That is how good 1999 is it is almost in a sense not a creepypasta pasta in the common conception the format relies on the audience having qualities most commonly present in children. Yknow like naivety, credulity, not familiar enough with tropes to break immersion, and still being highly susceptible to shock value techniques. It is one of the few probably 1 in 3 of creepypastas that are artistically significant as works of literature. Ted the caver partially has the status from being the pioneering work it deals with a much more conventional found media format which was still a bit avant-garde at the time it is really almost a necessary element to the creepypasta as a format to be found media. The Blair Witch Project allusion works great with the chronology and original 1999 name. As corny and poorly executed as it is, to a young child in 1999 nothing could be more terrifying than The Blair Witch Project. Candle Cove and 1999 using a more uniquely internet version of found media and the organic presentation and camouflaged in their fictitious status they really are the quality standard and stylistic originators of what we now consider common place by the name of unfiction. Technically the found footage fake documentary are unfiction and the original ARGs being unfiction too it could be argued. the quintessential cultural phenomenon that is under the specific term unfiction in the capacity to so thoroughly convince the audience of authenticity Candle Cove and 1999 are really the landmark works of art. They are going to be at some point in time in textbooks for students to practice literally analysis upon. 1999 is just so brilliant I can hardly believe that the author has such humility or really that they are outside the horror niche and made a work of horror so ground breaking and well horrific. Literary genius.

    The story feels so plausible because it is based in his real experience as a caver from his real journal. He may not be a professional story writer but his embellishments were written with the same tone as the true parts of the journal so it all reads "true." An oldie and a goldie of a tale.

The next day while I was in the bath tub he surprised me with a rat in his mouth and let the rat go into the tub. The next day I talked to my neighbor who had helped me bury my cat. He told me a story about the native Americans that stopped using the cemetery due to the dead coming back to life. I was told never to bury anything else there due to the ground being sour.

    Such an amazing experience to hear from the original creator of the story! Nick Botic I don't know if you will see this but I just wanted to know, if someone were to make a found footage adaptation on RUclips of this creepypasta that stays very true to the story, would they need the permission of the author (i.e. Ted Hegemann) and if so how would one get in contact with him? Or is putting a link to the story and including a description saying "this is not an original work" credit enough because I am scared of copyright laws XD and I just want to make a fun fan adaptation of a story I have grown up loving while giving as much credit to the original creator as possible!

    • @nickbotic
      @nickbotic 7 месяцев назад

      Hey hey, so you would absolutely need permission, and since there is already a movie based on the story, it’s very likely that the film adaptation rights are held by the studio that produced the film. It’s an older movie, so the rights *could* have reverted back to Ted, but I wouldn’t count on it, and even if they had, you would 100% get a takedown order if you adapted the story, regardless of credit to the original author.

    • @Aleco4620
      @Aleco4620 7 месяцев назад

      @@nickbotic thank you so much for getting back to me, I truly appreciate it. I think there may have been a misunderstanding, my plan is to make a fan made retelling of the story in a small found footage RUclips video (basically showing the story, and trying to act as Ted). I'm not backed by any sort of funding or studio, I just have a phone camera and know of a local cave where I can film what the story tells and think it would be a fun little project. I also do not plan on monetizing this video in any sort of way since it is not my own work and I 100% plan on crediting the Angelfire link to the original story as well as stating its a fan made video. Similar to all the 2 hour long videos of people re-reading the story on RUclips, I just want to show it instead of read it. I haven't even tried filming it yet to be honest and just wanted to get some more info on how to credit the original creator. I hope that clears up how I want to go about it but if that requires film rights from a studio then is there any way I could get that? Or any direction you could point me in to help with that? Cause I think this video could be so cool honestly
