Dinosaur Time Machine #3
Now it's time to record the sound effects. Ben kindly suggested I should speak and record them! It's one thing to record each sound effect, but another to work out how to wire up the controls so they can be played in the right order by kids attending his wonderful kindergarten dinosaur experiences!
It's all well and good having a dinosaur time machine... now we need to work out how the controls work the sound effects...

Time to add sound effects to Ben's Temporal Distortion Engine. Ben goes into kindergartens in the US (primary schools in the UK) as Jurassic Jabber, to inspire young people with a love of paleontology. He takes in exciting 3D printed dinosaur fossils and wanted a time machine to further enhance their excitement. Originally it was going to be a series of time machine controls that could be set b...

I've been asked to build another time machine! This one is a time machine to enthuse young people with an interest in dinosaurs. Ben visits kindergartens in the US and needs a time machine which the children can use to 'transport them' to their chosen dinosaur era. How exciting! Ben has bought a delightful 1950s wooden radio and wants exciting time controls to replace the radio tuning controls.

Oh, it was all going to be so simple - a finger snap and a video edit to the painted and working steampunk penny arcade game 'management' machine. I think machine is the right term, considering how many individual mechanisms are involved. It's all coming together; finally managing to get the game 'management' mechanics working. A step nearer to actually designing the actual game! Time to try and turn horribly complicated arcade machine mechanism models into proper CAD working mechanisms. Oh, so simple or NOT. As I said in the last video: 'The joy of finally getting a mechanism working is well worth the hours spent in its development.' I have to say, this is wearing a bit thin! Hello John. I send you an email.
Thanks Ibrahim.
I’ve got an AquaLisa Thermo Quartz and they’ve stopped making the on off lever. It was £40 for a small bit of plastic and now it’s not available. Avoid AquaLisa if possible.
Good advice, especillay considering the poor quality of design and manufacture in the first place. I suppose you couldn't 3D print a replacement?
@ No 3d modelling skills and no 3d printer ☹️ Sought out your video to see if the on/off switch you fitted would work with the Quartz Thero. I think it might.
@@augnkn93043 there are two small microswitches on my model that are operated by cams on the back of the rotating 'power' control - one for low pump speed and one for high. Can you send me a photo of your switches to john@steamhead.co.uk
Okay just found your channel, 3 videos in and i live watching your projects!
Can you get parts for a 2002 aquastream? I am trying to take it off the wall which is proving difficult because of the rear entry pipes and the push fit connectors
I seem to remember I got several parts from here: www.showerdoc.com/aqualisa-aquastream-thermostatic-post-2003-shower-spares?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj4K5BhDYARIsAD1Ly2p6qc1S9YhTHf-GmxNwMAjkvZ9-AhFdqmsihrmxkAFCMGOE_8yfLT4aAs42EALw_wcB I managed to replace the pump, motor, the switches and the control knob without having to remove it from the wall. Everything could be dissassembled and replaced whilst in situ.
You are the best steampunk builder
Thank you most kindly!
Ben I think the cabinet you have in mind will take a nice sized speaker that will enhance John's dulcet tones. Ps John any squeaking you should put down to close tolerances and precision construction. I had a door hinge that for many years had a wonderful squeak giving good warning of Banjo creeping up on me, that is until some kind soul oiled it. Scratchy to Ziggy
It's very kind of you to suggest my dulcet tones can be improved through the implementation of a good quality speaker! You can't beat a squeaky door to warn of an approaching dog...
Congrats on another completed project! 🥳
Thank you kindly!
Excellent work as always. I was a bit concerned about noise I heard on the audio. Sounded like ground noise to me. Maybe run either the laptop or the time machine off batteries when programming the audio? The laptop PSU's probably not earthed, but that doesn't stop it putting in earth noise via capacitance.
Thank you. I haven't heard any ground noise, although the sound effects board samples at 8KHz, so does sound a bit 'wooly'.
@@steamhead OK. Sorry, I thought I could hear noise on the audio at 4:30.
@@epiendless1128 I've checked, and realised it may have been the noise created by me scratching the magnet holder against the wood as I hadn't yet fixed it to the shaft...
The way you solve your wire collection tangle is to buy cheap dollar store Ziplock plastic bags. Mine are stored like that and no more problem.
That's a brilliant idea - no tangling and you can go through them easily! Thank you.
I so enjoy your videos
Thanks very much for your encouragement, it's greatly appreciated.
I admire your patience on setbacks.
Thanks David - a setback presents an opportunity, or some annoying saying!
I have an electrical cable drawer organized just like yours.
Sadly I've ended up with five; I just can't bear to throw any away - they represent the history of connecting things - SCART, UHF TV, Phono audio, DIN audio... the list goes on.
Watching from Philippines
I'm so glad to have another interested viewer!
I think the time selector needs a positive action (like a rotary switch), so that it clicks onto a definite time period.
or a magnet to hold it in place.
I did wonder about adding something like this, but thought that the kids would want to read the legend, so would line it up properly! I'll see what Ben thinks.
Nick's law of cables: two cables, when placed in parallel will unfathomably intertwine when unobserved.
An astute observation. I often wonder whether to leave a video camera on the container just to see exactly what goes on! The thing is, if you wanted them to intertwine in such complex ways, they wouldn't...
Great content as always, pleased to watch!
Thank you so much for your continued support of the channel!

Hey, I know Ben, he sent me your way to check this out! This looks so good and will really go super well with that radio. He's got some fantastic props for his presentations and is such a font of knowledge, this is going to be so fun for the kids. Very well done!
Thanks very much for visiting! It really is enjoyable working on Ben's design as it's for such a good cause. The kids should really enjoy travelling back in time!
looks a little dull though without flashing lights, an abort button, buzzer and transport button,!
Thankfully it's designed to fit onto a lovely 1950s wooden radio cabinet which will have plasma balls, a nixie tube clock and smoke generators, so this shouldn't be an issue!

BRILLIANT in my senior school voice as you remind me of my favorite design teacher who allowed me to build my drawings in the70/80's & Paninni had our paper round money off us for Dinosaur stickers.
I'm so pleased to have brought back fond memories! You never forget a good teacher...
You need an exact day counter on that somewhere. because butterflies..
That reminds me of a joke: When asked how old a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil was, the museum attendant said '80 million years, 6 months, 4 days and 3 hours'. When asked how they could be so precise, they replied 'It was 80 million years old when I started working here, and I've been here for 6 months, 4 days and 3 hours'...

Hi. Just thought of something whilst watching this which may be worth experimenting with some time? If you leave some of the edge unpainted on some acrylic and mask of an area on the face when painting it, then use an LED to light it from the side you may be able to come up with some interesting effects for sign illumination etc.?
Thank you for suggesting edge lit acrylic. I too appreciate its potential and used it whilst making the Tardis Time Control Lever: ruclips.net/video/h3IJz8uASmI/видео.html. I understand the dinosaur time travelling machine will be employed in brightly lit classrooms, so possibly not suitable for this project...
Rather than using reed switches, maybe consider 'Hall effect' sensors. They may be cheaper since you are intending to use 13. :)
or use an encoder
@@TheUnofficialMaker Thank you. I did consider using an encoder, but the 'controller' needs to know their position upon startup - possibly a reed switch!
I'd prefer to use Hall Effect Sensors, but I've found them to be far more expensive than reed switches - I've just bought 20 reed switches for £6.50. Please do let me know if you've found a cheaper source of Hall Effect Sensors!
Very cool Steamhead
Thank you kindly! It's so nice to work on something that will inspire so many children with an interest in paleontology
I don't know if this idea will work with your table saw. I built my router table into the right open side of my table saw, between the front and rear fence rails, flush with the saw table. Just drop the router bit below the table, to use the saw as normal. It has several advantages. #1, it increases the useful size of the table saw top. #2, you can use the table saw fence also as a fence for the router if you want. #3, the router table does not take up additional floor space, that the table saw already takes up. #4, and the router table is always right there ready to use. If you want, let me know. I will e mail you a picture if you want. I've been using mine now for at least 10 years, and have zero complaints.
That's a great idea! My table saw has been relegated to living under a lean to in the side passage outside the workshop - very limited room inside... I hadn't realised its potential to be a router table, what a brilliant idea. Thank you.
I so enjoy your videos
Thanks David!
Are you planning to create a Patreon page? I even have one.
I have been thinking about it, as any additional funds would be greatly appreciated and would prompt more regular videos! Having said that, I haven't got as far as finding out what's involved or what extra work it would mean... Have you any suggestions?
have you tried home barging for the spray paint
Thanks for the suggestion. I've just checked and sadly they don't sell Plastikote paint. However, whilst on my search for some fast drying silver paint, I popped into a local family run paint shop and they were happy to order me 12 cans of brass for a reasonable price. It's so nice to actually talk to a real person rather than buying online!

Ah, a holiday! Glad you had a break. Well deserved with your double duty, being inventor of things and video maker extraordinaire. You wear both hats well. I still really enjoy you allowing us to watch over your shoulder during your creative problem solving. It’s addictive ☺️ The build looks amazing, also really clean. Almost a bit too perfect for something that is supposed to have been used for millennia. Have you ever looked into weathering a one-off creation like this to give it a bit more of a lived-in look? Probably too cost-intensive, as it’s a bit time-consuming. I’ve enjoyed watching how Adam Savage transformed some of his models quite dramatically this way. But either way is fun. And someone has to pay for the time.
Thank you so much for your encouragement, it's really inspiring. Two weeks to get over the two week holiday, but hopefully normal service has now resumed! Weathering is an interesting idea. I've always tended to shy (run) away from it, I suppose due to my engineering background. I must give it a go sometime, perhaps with the steampunk picture frames I used to make. They took ages to sell and I think may be far more popular if they were weathered. Thankfully Dan's design shows it as being immaculate!
