Turn It On Again Cover/Tutorial
I play Tony Banks' keyboard parts from "Turn It On Again" originally released on their 1980 Duke album. The track I used in the background is from The Way We Walk Live video.
I used the Rhodes MK80. Originally Tony would have also used a Rhodes MK80 along with a Kurzweil 1000PX
Recorded and mixed in Ableton Live 11.

I spent my whole life thinking Tony was sleeping during this song until the rhodes parts 😂 Good job for finding those drum samples !
I adore this album, A Curious Feeling is my favourite track.
Nice job!
Tony banks, one of the best keyboardists in progressive scenes.
Love those chimes 😀
One of my favourite songs( also second home by the sea) besides the Cinema show!!! Go Phil Collins!!! 🥁🎶👍
Since this also says tutorial, can you just tell me… when does the snare come in ? On the 4 or the and? This is 4/4 right?
This is awesome!’ Love the keyboard!! And drums 🎶😊
1st class
Could you please tell me how you get the high pitch arpeggio effect which comes in at 9.52 please?? You're playing a downward run that goes: B flat, G sharp, F sharp, E over and over, but have you added a delay effect?? I'd love to know as I'm creating a full midi file of the song to play along with on my keys!! Many thanks, love your videos, Andre!!
That's a factory preset from the Synclavier II. I can't remember what it's called but it's among the factory ones. It's included in this demo here ruclips.net/video/VdnRZJXzm9M/видео.htmlsi=nsRg32M6PN2FnZj7&t=72
@@GenesisKeyboardCovers Hi, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to get back to me, I really appreciate it!! So I take it you sampled the Synclavier preset and that's what you're playing?? That is so cool and speaks volumes about your attention to detail!! I don't have a sampler or a Synclavier, so I'll improvise a sound and put a heavy downward portamento glide on it, I'm sure I'll get something close!! Thanks again, being a Genesis fan of 44 years thus far and with Tony Banks being my all time number 1 keyboard playing idol, I absolutely love your videos and I'm sure Tony would be very moved and flattered by them too as your videos pay his immense talent the ultimate compliment!! Keep up the great work my friend!! All my very best, Andre, Liverpool UK!!
@@GenesisKeyboardCovers PS: If I could, may I suggest a Genesis keyboard cover for you to have a go at please?? To my knowledge, NOBODY has ever even tried it and, even worse than that, this piece of music never even gets acknowledged, doesn't have a name and it's not even mentioned on the album sleeve credits!! Personally, I love it as it's so dark and eerie!! On the legendary album 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway,' my second favourite Genesis album ever after Trick Of The Tail, there is a song which ALL Genesis fans know and love called 'In The Cage!!' A song which was always the highlight of any Genesis live show!! However, on the original 'Lamb' album, as 'In The Cage' fades out and before 'The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging' begins, this really spooky, mysterious little musical interlude, which Tony must've played on his Arp Pro-Soloist and Mellotron fades in!! If you know the album, you'll know what I'm referring to, it only lasts around 53 seconds!! I'd absolutely love to see you have a go at it, so I'll keep an eye out and continue to watch this space!! Just a thought!! Thanks again for the reply and the Synclavier video link, I'm absolutely bouncing off the walls!! Keep up the great work!! Andre!!
@@andremcpherson1424 Absolutely! No problem! I really love getting into the technical side of the keyboards. The search for these sounds is very rewarding when you do find the right one. Banks used a lot of the presets on the Synclavier so most of the sounds can be found on those timbre disks. Getting recognized by Tony himself is definitely a dream of mine. That In The Cage outro is definitely interesting since it sounds like a polysynth. Most likely it would be multiple ARP Pro Soloist tracks on top of each other like you mentioned. I've mostly thought that if I do cover In The Cage it will be as a part of the 1984 medley which I may even say is my favorite Genesis piece/medley of all time. Currently I'm two pieces away from finishing the 1992 setlist of course I've left the hardest two as the last ones.
What is the brass sound you are using?
This is absolutely fantastic ~ well played, and all in one take it seems, just brilliant👌🥹 …and here I am, a senior Genesis fan, with tears running down my face🥲~ my goodness!!🤭 Was looking for a keyboard tutorial to learn the parts of this epic track! So thank you so much for sharing ~ you’ve got yourself a new subscriber👍
Back in the day it was always fun watching people try to dance to this one! 🤣 Nice job, thx for sharing!
This is my fav song, between the pedal tone and the constant meter changes that both highlight unresolved tension... similar to that of my own life. IMHO, the best ever recording of this song was on the Three Sides Live album of the 1981-82 tour. The Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano is the central instrument here, no MIDI, no layering, just pure unadulterated (albeit chorused) exhibition of the instrument that did for Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins what the piano-forte did for Beethoven: allowed for the writing of music that would otherwise not have been written (BTW, that is my CP-80 featured in my avatar). The synthesizer on that recording was a Prophet-10 that tuned 2 oscillators apart by a fourth, enabling the line to be played with one finger of the left hand while the right hand stayed on the piano. One comment: during the "bridge," you are playing Dmaj-Dmaj-Dmaj-Cmaj... Dmaj-Dmaj-Dmaj-Cmaj, followed by Fmaj-Fmaj-Fmaj, then an EbMaj, however the proper progression is Fmaj x 3, then Gmaj x1, before going to the BbMaj.
Plok soundtrack cover when?
One, two, three, four 🎹
At 5:05, it's not a true Tony Banks cover without the "tada hands". :) On the "so long ago..." part, what is the patch or what did you use to program it?
That one I believe is a combination of the Prophet 10 and DX7. In my case I used two instances of Repro 5 for the analogy envelope sound and Dexed for the bell part of the sound.
Phil Collins' voice already needed to tone down in 1984 😮... fantastic transition between the two songs...😊
Молодец, всё четко
Brilliant. Thanks.
Can you please write the chords for the intro.
Intro chords: left Hand, (AbM7, Ab6) x3, Fm, Csus Verse: right Hand, (AbM7, Eb, AbM7, Bb, Bb, Ab, Cm, Bb, AbM7, Eb, AbM7, Bb, Bb, ((First time)Cm, Ab, Bb) ((second time)Cm, C#5 9, Csus2)x2 1:57 F, G, C, G, F, G, F, G, Gm, F, Gm, F, G, F, G, F, G, Gm, F, Gm, F Intro again, left Hand Verse again only First time, than AbM7, Eb in a Loop.
Good cover, respect!👍
I tuoi inimitabili, magici accordazzi, geniaccio mio💙🥰
I didn't think I could admire Tony more than I already do. Seeing this however, the intricacies, the chord diagram, and the thought needed to accomplish what I'm seeing brings Mr. Banks to god like status.
Greetings sounds nice!!!!👍
Is it possible to download a sample on the Wavestation, so you can play the sample on the Wavestation without being connected to a computer?
Can you explain how you made the Dx7/Rhodes sounds? I can’t seem to figure it out. It sound likes strings but its layered with something else.
Is the live version half step down?
It's a whole step down from the original studio recording. This live version rises up to the original key for the last chorus.
Also, can you give any insight on how you made the sample for the bridge? That sound has always eluded me!
I found that one on a video that went through some of Tony's Emulator II sounds.
Nice cover as always! I believe the main pad sound was played on the JD-800, in this video you can see Alex Ball playing Tony's actual JD-800 from this tour and the first patch is one called IT: ruclips.net/video/AJKAVVi6Kfc/видео.html Your sound was also great though!
Thank you! It might be Tony's synth but I'm fairly sure none of those are Tony's sounds. None of the others sound right and the Invisible Touch patch is the only one that's close to anything that was played live. Besides why carve a mark for a split point into the keyboard when the song was never played on the JD800 keybed? I'm not entirely happy with my version of the sound either but it works.
I think Tony Banks didnt play after the C minor in the beginning Verse a Bb Major, i think he played a g, not an f
FIRST TO PEAK (cover not the song)
Wonderful. ❤
How did you make the lead horn sound on the Korg?
Such a band of melody-makers. They will be marveled for generations to come. Is Genesis today's Bach? Used for keyboard 'exercises'?
Genesis were, are and will be the greatest band on Earth
What a PERFECT song to close an era. Tears.
I fully agree !!🥹 ~ here I am, a full grown senior with tears running down my face🥲 ~ what the hell is that all about 🤦♂️ ~ maybe I have to have a talk with my shrink 🤷
@@mikedenmark If no tears, THEN it is time to go to the shrink. The end of an era is traumatic......especially when the band was so wonderfully successful.
@@rk41gator Thank you for stating that so succinctly!! ~ with kind regards from a fellow devoted Genesis fan👍 Peace & 🫶
One of my favorite Genesis songs without a doubt, and I agree it’s an underrated track. Very deep lyrics. Impeccable performance by you!!! Very well done and thanks for this. What VFX vst are you using?
Another great job GKC - a rather unconventional Genesis tune. I saw several shows from this tour and by the time they got around to playing “I Can’t Dance” the audience was so “lit up” (contact or otherwise 😈) that people were dancing along with Phil, Mike & Daryl. My favorite tour though was “Three Sides Live” - it was the best of “both” Genesis’s - plus they played Supper’s Ready in its entirety! As always, thx for the video!
Amazing !!
Not the peak of progress rock anymore. Nice Cover anyway
Great cover!!!
The worst of the worst
Why
the performance or the song because this channel is stellar for their covers of tony's parts on the live and studio recordings
How did you set your Wavestation up to do this? How do you stop the Wavestation keys from playing the Ooos sound?
Incredible job! From Minnesota USA.
This is perfect, dude.
My favourite song on ATTWT! 🤩
Nice job young sir, one of my favourite tracks from this album, I love the Korg Wavestation, the fact that your lucky to own the original board & another favourite synth of mine the Ensoniq VFX, have you tried the new Korg 61 key Wavestate, not cheap at £1500 but sounds great, keep up the great talent😊🎹
Never mind the technical autopsy....., BRILLIANT version. Anyone who can recreate the right sounds for Tony Bank's keyboards has got talent. This was a pleasure to watch. Spot on. Well done.
How did you make the VFX pad?
@@samanipreston It's a simple 2 oscillator sawtooth pad. With a bit of low-pass and high-pass filtering.
Is there anyway you could share the marimba sample? There seems to be no VST or anything else online similar.
@@samanipreston I've added a download link for it in the description. I've added a bit of EQ to it and the reverb you'll have to add yourself since that doesn't transfer over too well in samples.
