I had the great pleasure and honour of singing with Mick and his orchestra in the early 60's.....
Those of us who were so lucky to have danced and listened to Mick Del in his final years in Ardpatrick Co Limerick were really privileged . His music and band members were outstanding back then . Well done Declan.

I'm pretty sure that at around the 5 min mark I saw Ted flynn and his wife I think Mary was her name.. they lived below the ink bottle out side Pilton.. often had the egg in there house as a child

Not fair. He wasn't a showband and catered to a, different audience of his own style.
My honest opinion is Mick Delahunty was very overrated, most show bands were far superior.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I don’t think there would be many to agree with you.
Function back in the 1950s ? Mick Delahuntys band were outstanding for their era . May they all rest in Peace
Bill Grant, comparing Mick Delahunty’s band as seen in this video to a showband is pointless. This video was shot in the GAA centre in Clonmel sometime in the 80’s. The band you see here is a far cry from the dance band Mick had on the road in the 60’s and 70’s. That was a full band comparable to say The Glen Miller band. The ‘group’ you see here was Micks last, the glory days of filling dance halls and hotel ballrooms was over. In practical and economic terms it was unsustainable so the only way forward was a small group. I replaced Noel O’Dwyer (seen here playing trumpet) for a couple of years in this band. I also played trumpet with a Dublin based showband in ‘83 so I’m qualified to talk about both. Showbands played music that was popular in the charts. Mick played dance music from a bygone but not forgotten era. No comparison. He was and still is a very important figure in Irish music history for those who know. Declan O’Dwyer. Clonmel.
