El Centro Big Picture High School - Going Home
Просмотров 5308 месяцев назад
Philadelphia's El Centro Big Picture High School opened its doors in 2009 - moving in and out of four different buildings, but never one that they could call home. In 2024, they'll move to a building that's theirs. A building built to the specifications of a school that puts students' interests first. A building that - after many years - they can call 'home'.

Seeing students as real people with individual interests is humane. How did we get so way off course, teaching at students and not with students anyway? This movement started and stopped in the “70’s. Glad to see it’s back, and hopefully to stay.
yes, beautiful story, i have same desires, and by Gods grace will make it real in my own country Cameroon. but, i need help and i don't know how to go about
To my fellow teachers…BEWARE…San Diego Unified promotes “NO Bullying” but my experience working for this principal was all bullying.. The first thing she said to me was “I worked in Virginia with old white men… and I loved them.” That was an ageist and racist comment. I was a successful teacher with multiple accolades in teaching before and after my time at the MET. I have never worked for such an unprofessional and passive aggressive principal in my career. Many staff members were stressed due to her management style. Again…Beware of this principal if you have to work for her.
Wow! That's wonderful!
I like the Phrase "look out and notice when the gravity of tradition is pulling you backwards"
These voices bring alive the topics covered in Littky's book "THE BIG PICTURE: Education is everyone's business." (2004)
This is great, Loren!

Hey John, if you ever read this, know that your songs have shook me. Please keep going. Prine is dead, bring me more songs. I need them. Love you, and yours’ (cute baby)
Great lecture
I'm really sad to hear that he passed away! I've always dreamed to meet him and I remember feeling so excited in 2016 when I heard that he was going to be the keynote speaker at Big Bang. He is one of the few who showed the world a better way of education. May he rest in peace!😭😫😭😭😭
I love this! It is so raw and everyone feeds off the vibe from everyone else. WOW
rip big brother 🖤😥
R.i.p cuz smh
Look in on youtube "Teach Yourself and Others - Lucid Method Part 1 " and more... ruclips.net/video/fVYBeRghfnQ/видео.html Let’s start by acknowledging that not all learners are successful in the traditional verbal method of teaching. Mind Research Institute shows that only a relatively small percent of all learners are successful in traditional verbal method of teaching. Does this mean that the others are not good enough to learn? - The answer is NO. I can say this for sure because I am the one of them. I struggle in learning until I developed my learning style base not on primarily words components. It changed outcome. I got master’s Degree in Engineering and PhD in Math and Physics. This is why I focused on technology in order to expand opportunities for learners by implementing different means to access the materials and different type of activities to work on it. American educator Edgar Dale in his Cone of Learning shows that the most affective learning process require participants to be an active learner (after 2 weeks we tend to remember 70% of what we SAY and 90% of what we SAY and DO). So, we have to focus on these type of activities. Our goal is to convert the student from a passive into an active learner using Technology. Lucid Method marries Dale’s ideas and Digital Technology. Lucid Method provides self-paced independent learning. Each section is a sequence small self-sufficient units. Material presented in illustrative form (see examples www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhmug... .) Complete learning of unit is combine in ONE CYCLE. Graduate process of continues learning has several leers, from logical path of complete unit to practice problems in order to check outcome. Cone of the Lucid Method show the process of learning. It combines different type of activities. Graduate process of learning has several leers, from logical path of complete unit to practice problems in order to check outcome. 1st layer is: Hearing and Watching, it is a Logical Path through the slide, it is introduction to the important slide. 2nd layer is: Hearing, Watching and manually Navigating PowerPoint presentation. During the presentation of material the learner has to fully focus up to 5 min in order to integrate the visual and verbal parts by clicking back and forth to synchronize them, with the ability to pause the presentation if more time is needed for processing. (Computer game type of actions) 3rd layer is: Watching, manually Navigating PowerPoint presentation and verbally reproducing the audio Commentary (“karaoke style”). The learner goes over the entire slide while reproducing the verbal/audio parts in his mind, or whispering to himself to be sure that he understands all logical steps in presentation and connections between them in the sequence. 4th layer is: taking notes, solving problems etc. If learner follow these sequences he is an active learner the most of time. It is a perfect time for critical thinking because “Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. “ (Taken from Richard Paul and Linda Elder. The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Foundation for Critical Thinking Press, 2008)”
In the five years, I've known and have listened to anything recorded of Dennis Littky, I've never heard him swear - which is cool makes me want to swear too being in a situation where I get shut down everytime I bring up an issue in the school I teach at!
I rose my hand for all the books but I didn't get any! That's not fair, man!
