Battle Ready Gold- Grimdark Sanguinary Guard Tutorial
Finally tackle your Sanguinary Guard with this Grimdark Gold tutorial!
Miniatures that are pure metallic can be tough to paint in a weathered, grimdark style. The latest example of this is the new Sanguinary Guard from the Blood Angels range of Space Marines. If you want to use these gilded gentlemen on the battlefield, but don't want to interrupt your army's grim atmosphere, give this recipe a try!

Need an easy, quick, and stunning grimdark paint scheme for your Blood Angels or other red-clad space marines? Try this one out! This is how I approach the Warhammer Grimdark stippling/sponging technique on personal Blood Angels army, to create atmospheric miniatures without the need for oils, enamels, or other harsh chemicals. Just old school pigment pushing here! Gone Hollow Minis is dedicate...
Second comment because I also love shading gold with purple! I love the contrast it gives
It's definitely my favorite way to shade gold. Both the change in hue and the more matte finish work really well.
I know they weren't the point of the video, but I see and appreciate those Stormcast you showed in the video. The head swaps are great!
Happy to see another Stormcast fan! Head swaps do a ton of work to make them unique.
3:11 "plastic surgery" 🤣🤣🤣
I do like your technique and the minis look really good but personally I want my golden boys gold, not old weathered brass. Just my taste.
Fair enough! It's definitely a bit less angelic. And I will admit that I'm generally not a huge fan of gold anyway, so I was kinda biased from the start. 😅
This is great! Please keep the channel. Wonderful videos.
I'm glad to be able to help! More stuff is coming for sure. Happy to have you along! 😄
hello, thank you verry much for sharing this, i love it. I was wandering are those wings from the ancient sanguinary guard,?also, where did you find that helmet? it looks amaizing
Thank you for watching! The jetpacks and helmets are STL files that I found on Cults3D. I found them by searching 'bloody Angel jetpack' or something similar. The specific files for the helmets seem to have been taken down, but I imagine there are similar newer ones. All I did was add the little halo bit before printing!
or use blighted gold by p3
But where's the fun in that? 😉
What bits are you using for your sanguinary guard they look good
Most of the model is the standard kit, but the helmet and jump pack are STL files I found on Cults. I added the crest to the helmet before printing, but the wings were printed straight from the file.
I'm very interested to see how you would take on a sanguinary priest
Ooh, the white armor would be interesting to tackle in this style... I'll have to add it to the list!
Those look awesome. I want to try this technique on Custodes. Thanks for sharing!!
Custodes would be a perfect army to try this on! I'd love to see how they turn out if you feel like sharing!
dark angels please
Very soon! I was able to get my hands on one of the Christmas dark angels boxes, so as soon as that comes in we'll get digging into the Unforgiven!
@@GoneHollowMinis lucky man, i was there 10 mins before and couldnt get one. looking forward to the video
Ah nuts. 😞 I got lucky with a local game store. I'll make sure to do them justice!
I rather have my gold look more like Bronze or copperish colours if I am doing Grimdark minis, maybe something like a chalice il have looking more gold.
Good point! Having a focal point like a chalice be super bright gold would be a really good way to draw attention to it!
Very nice! Is there a custodes army in your future?
I am a fan of bananas... 🤔
I dont see any grimdark here at all

@Livinginyourwalls-px4zm Sorry, I didn't realize you were dating. Very chivalrous of you to jump in and defend your partner
@@criticalcommenter Damn you think i got a chance of dating him?🥺👉👈 Thanks sweetheart
@@Livinginyourwalls-px4zm i assumed you were a couple. What other reason would you have to white knight so hard? Sorry to hear it's a one sided love. I hope you find someone who appreciates your chivalrous nature
Thank you as allways Mr. Hollow :)
No, thank you, person living in my walls. :)
Nice one, liked and subbed 😊
Thank you! Happy to have you along! 😄
Such a great video, only recently got into warhammer but seeing stuff like this is just breathtaking really inspiring me to buy some grey plastic 😂😂
Awesome! Welcome to the hobby! I may be biased, but I think buying grey plastic is always a great investment. As long as you paint it at some point. 😉
I can from Instagram
Happy to have you here! 😄
Aw dude. This is SO cool.
IT HAS ARRIVED!!
It has indeed! Apologies for the wait!
@ no apology necessary; worth every second I (passively) spent waiting.
Unreal! Loving your work and so well explained
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed! 😄
I saw your reel on instagram and immediately ordered a sanguinor and now there is a tutorial 😍
I'm so glad to hear that! Glad you enjoyed the video and happy hobbying!
I came from Instagram, love the work 🤙
Thank you! Happy to have you here! 😄
Thank you Mr. Hollow :)
Always happy to help (:
Looks awesome!! Also if I may ask, how should I go about kitbashing my own Dornian Heresy Nurgle Blood Angels? The inspirations for what I have in mind for Nurgle Blood Angels is the Crimson Court from Darkest Dungeon, older tales of vampires being more akin to Ghouls or zombies, certain real life diseases, the Reapers from Blade, the Crimson Rot (namely the Cleanrot Knights) from Elden Ring, and gothic/renaissance era aesthetics mixed with the decay and pestilence of Nurgle
Good question! I'm looking into doing a pretty similar thing, also heavily inspired by Darkest Dungeon and Elden Ring, (both games are GOATed lol) and while I haven't gotten too hands-on with that project yet, here are some of the ideas I've had so far! For the insectoid aspects, I'm probably going to be borrowing pretty heavily from the AoS Nurgle range. Things like the Pusgoyle Blightlords are great base kits for some more buggy conversions! Greenstuff is also going to carry my conversions pretty hard, I think. I'll be doing a lot of mosquito proboscis looking things breaking out from the mouth grills of helmets. As for the Caelid vibe, I'm planning on working that into my basing scheme. The different types of mushrooms will be fun to sculpt in greenstuff, I think, and having some red tones on the base will contrast well with the general green Nurgle tones! I'll definitely be making more Nurgle content going forward once I get a bit more hands on with the models and conversions!
@GoneHollowMinis Those sound great! I've also thought about using Mosquito elements for my corrupted Blood Angels since Mosquitoes have been known to carry diseases and drink blood, might incorporate the Mosquito elements into the designs as either mutations, decorations, or iconography (or all three of them)
Hell yeah! That looks amazing!
Awesome BA Brother. Y'know, your style would lend itself marvelously to Raptors Chapter! Food for thought! Also, the easiest sub this week, looking forward to your future work!😁
This is exactly what I was looking for. Just started painting and delving into the hobby a few months back. Took the full dive and grabbed the death company box and wanted some more tips on how to paint a more gritty Blood Angel army. Thanks for uploading! Liked and subbed, hope you do more vids!
Found you through Instagram. Great tutorial! I usually don't like the Blood Angel colour scheme but your version looks great. Thx for sharing
Your minis look class! I’ve been trying a few different styles, am looking at picking up some custodes and think your grim dark gold would look great on them. Would love a tutorial!
Thank you so much! The Grimdark Gold recipe is definitely high on the list to get a tutorial! I've got some Sanguinary Guard I'm cooking up that'll be perfect to show it off! 😉
Glad to hear it, keep the videos coming! 🫡
Thank you the result is splendid
Happy to help!
That is a very nice, helpful little tutorial. Thanks!
Happy to help! I'm glad you enjoyed!
Just gave you a sub!! This easy grimdark style tutorial would definitely work well for how I want to paint my Dornian Heresy Nurgle Blood Angels (though obviously gonna look abit more filthy and corroded sonce they're aligned with Nurgle)
Hey! Happy to have you here! 😄 It would definitely be a good base for some more nurgly details! Some green snot/goo effects would contrast really well with the red I think!
@GoneHollowMinis Most definitely
So firstly, GW has always encouraged the personal approach to colour schemes, even for the original Chapters for Space Marines. So from that point of view more power to you. With regards to your colour application, there is like 10 layers of paint for the armour alone. How many marines were you planning on painting? An army or Kill Team? Because even with batch painting that army will take a while. Furthermore, the accoutrements were yet to be painted which points to even more time. Finally, how do you get metal and rust from ceramics? SM armour is made from ceramite, clay concrete mix of the future. But if you want metal, your choice, just not part of the lore. Finally, even on campaign, suits would be undergoing maintenance, repair and cleaning. These are elite troops that depend on their armour for their lives. If you want an example, just look at any armoured unit from WW2 and see how by the next battle in a campaign the vehicles were once again rust free and fully coated in paint while their engines were tuned to a T. Just saying.
Hello! I appreciate your criticism, and the time you took to reply and critique. I'm always looking to better myself! I've used this style on around 4-5k points of blood angels, of course with development and iteration over time, but it's a process that works for me and that my community over on Instagram wanted to see. If you would like to see a more in depth video by someone who has been in the hobby longer than I have, check out Trovarion's video on his channel. My scheme is based on those core principles! As for the lore, I do know what ceramite is, but the purpose of the metallic edge highlights is to catch the eye and define shapes, and metallic pigment does that more efficiently than a drag gray or cream ceramic color would do. I do enjoy the lore, and have read my share of 40k novels, but I prefer to find a balance between my own stories, the lore, and what I think looks good on the tabletop!
@@GoneHollowMinis I use this technique myself it is quick and forgiving as you said. At 58 the ol' eyes aren't what they used to be, and this works very well. No more trying to look like box art for me! One step I take a little further is that once I've reached the stage you have here - In order to blend the colours a little more I do a final coverage of diluted Streak n Grime which I then remove from the flat surfaces with Isopropyl Alcohol or a thinner - it really gets that grimdark vibe going!
Pretty nice tutorial😊 I also prefer the Grimdark style of painting. It is personal preference, some like boxart, some not. Everybody should paint the miniatures as they enjoy the most. It‘s a hobby and should not be taken too serious. We try to paint plastic figures and models, so we are a little bit away from realism and there must be room all styles of painting. It would be pretty boring if we paint all in the same style with the same colors. It‘s about enjoying and fun🙂 Keep up the good work mate✊
Came here from Instagram after seeing your kitbashed Sanguinor. Super excited to see that process get explained, because my Catholic wife would love a little gift like that.
Happy to have you here! Part one of the Sanguinor will definitely the next video up!
@ HELL yeah
What is that symbol on your laptop?
The thing to my left? That's the Blood Angels army box that came out a few months ago! (Also hiding my laptop and script 😅) The symbol is still a point of debate, as we haven't gotten a form answer yet, but it seems to be associated with either the Librarius or Astorath himself. It's a cool looking symbol that I hope we get to see more of!
this is a great method of painting an army, it's pretty fast, satisfies grimdark, and is forgiving for less experienced painters.
Awesome stuff dude. I've been wanting to diverge from the traditional GW style and luckily found you in my recommended : )
Thank you! I'm happy to have helped! 😄
What do you use to pin the model to the quark? I tried asking about a hand drill at my local hardware store but they only had dremels.
It is a hand drill! I found mine at hobby lobby, but there are online sellers that have them. There are also battery powered ones that are a bit more manageable than Dremel tools, if that's what you're going for! I'd stop in at a hobby store or check online.
@GoneHollowMinis do you use paperclips and quarks for the base and pin?
brother the barrel....... he looks SOOOOO good but that barrel
Make more videos!!!!!
You got it boss! 🫡
Found from Instagram. Subbed
Happy to have you here! 😄
Cheers man, dope painting and enthusiastic delivery. Subbed.

Beautiful stuff
Thank you much!
Could you do an emperors children?
I'll add them to the list! Heresy-era or 40k? 🤔
From instagram! Hello and thank you for the tutorial! Love the scheme
