Our flower graden three years after our last video featuring our Rose of Sharon that we pruned and trained from bushes to trees. We've also introduced iris and day lillies into our rose garden with a wonderful result.

A tour of my perennial, rose and butterfly gardens. I hope you enjoy the tour and pick up a few gardening tips. Tim Arnzen
Thank you Tim. We have just moved into our new home and I found a Rose of Sharon so your advice has been extremely useful. Thank you once again.
Thank you for sharing. I will add that Rose of Sharon trees require sun most of the day; otherwise, the entire plant will lean toward the light. (Speaking from personal experience.)
Absolutely gorgeous!!!😮 😂 I bought a dying cleome hassleriana, from a clearance rack and 20 years later, I was still trying to get rid of it or control it. They would even grow in between my patio stones. I planted a Red Pillar Rose of Sharon this year.❤
Beautiful garden!! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
HOW DO YOU TAKE THE SEEDS AND GROW
I don’t do seeds. But they sprout naturally oftentimes. That can be a problem in a garden setting
I was looking for videos regarding Rose of Sharon and found your channel. You are so lucky to have all that land to garden. I'm jealous! Great videos, thanks for all the information.
Beautiful
Thanks man definitely going buy the white and blue
I love them in any color.
Thank you for explaining how to trim the Rose of Sharon. We have a lot of them! They are beautiful and easy to grow. One of our neighbors has figured out how to make hanging baskets out of them, so we're going to try a "bonsai" method on one of them. Also, I saw where someone made a topiary out of one and your method of trimming would allow us to figure that out. Thank you so much for the vid!
I’ve had a lot of success with bonsai on ros the last few years. No more using a ladder on what used to be the big ones
Wonderfully helpful video - thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise! Spectacular garden 💜💜💜
Thank you so much for this video. I'm about to get a 2yr old Rose of Sharon that I want to grow as a tree. Your garden looks & sounds absolutely beautiful!
My mom has a Rose of Sharon that it looks more like an arbor hanging over the pool but it's so large and she don't want to prune it what can I use to lift it up and hold it up
Over rule her. Prune it. She will thank you after one year and marvel how smart you are. Otherwise you have a mess to deal with. Good luck
Thankyou EVER so much for sharing your work passion and purpose!! and I gather the mrs. is the camerawoman!!!
i finally figured out what tree is growing outside my grandmas house, she told me along time ago not to let anyone cut it, she told me what type of tree it was but i had forgotten after she passed away i just knew it was a rose tree but didnt know they start off as a bush, i thought the growth was stunted but i guess i just need to prune it back, amazing garden and great knowledge thank you
What a breathtaking garden! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.

Thank you so much for your informative video. I ordered 2 Pink Chiffon Rose of Sharon but things in California due to our long growing season tend to get much bigger than the labels claim. I still want. them fairly tall but as large multi-stemmed small "trees". This should anchor the 2 back corners of my downward terraced yard. Looking forward to playing with these as they grow. I have already been doing something very similar with a couple Jeffers bottlebrush "bushes. They look amazing this way and seem to flower better and the trunks are becoming very tree like and hold up well to the gusty winds we sometimes get in our mountain & lake view area.
I bit the bullet and pruned them very hard last fall I was nervous about outcome but I worked out great. They look very good this year
Such gorgeous gardens. Thank you for the great video.
@ral6935, I love your garden! May we please have a summer update since this fall pruning? I’d love to see the garden now.
3:52- make husband watch. Great video, btw.
This was a great video! I was able to clearly see, with this winter view, how you laid out your garden beds (I'm just starting), and it's giving me so many great ideas. Just planted my first 3 Rose of Sharon and am looking to pruning them your way once they get more established. Thank you so much for these wonderful videos, I will be referring back to them many, many times! ❤❤❤
I needed this, thank you! Just ordered a couple of roses of sharon and was worried the locations I have for them are too small. But now I know what to do to turn them into small trees! Your garden is an inspiration, sir!
I bet you have a crap load of bees lol!! Beautiful garden!! I may have missed it..can it be pruned any time of the summer? As it's almost July, Michigan, so not too hot.
I was taught to prune when the shears are sharp. Not bad advice. Stops procrastinating
Coppice it. I think you’ll be amazed if you’re brave enough to I do it the time do this in early spring after last frost
In forestry vernacular it’s called having an understory and overstory. That’s what I’m trying to do
Where did you say we can see your garden on youtube?
Arnzen garden
I love your gorgeous garden and I love the way you talk about it. It's like learning from a pro. Thank you so much. When can I plant Rose of Sharon?
Best if planted when dormant spring or fall. However a well potted plant can be planted anytime except winter.
I pruned one of mine to 3 main, then braided them when young. Its thriving. Im a hairstylist 😂 so even braid my plants, and live giving everything regular ' haircuts' 😂
If got one braided myself. If you’ll scar each side where they touch you’ll end up with one plant. I’ve seen this happen in nature where a white oak fused together with an eastern hemlock and it became a large hemlock tree. 53 years as a forester I’ve seen many strange things in nature
Very beautiful garden. I loved your tour video! Thank you for sharing your stunning garden.
Your idea to make Rosa Sharon into trees like a lollipop tree is awesome and I think it would be very good for a small garden because you could layer plantings. I love the cleome and I think the way you have the 68 foot trees. You could put the Komi under them. Thank you very much. I enjoyed your garden.
Amazing garden! Would like to see more
I really don’t know how to make videos and my brother has been an overused blessing
What growing zone are you in?
I still don't know when to prune
They are such a tough plant. Like a prof used to say. Whenever the saws sharp
Hi, Thanks alot the advices on how to take care of Rose of Sharon. I just learning how each plant work. I undestand more today why Rose S. and how take care of it. Please, Keep your videos coming.
Thank you for this lesson-- i like their flowers, but not so much the leggy, floppy look. Will work on it. 🌺 Your garden is beautiful 🏆👏
I pruned them VERY hard last fall. See the video and they are ding great now
I have 3 blue chiffon planted about 1 year ago. can't wait until i can make them into trees.
Your garden is so beautiful! I love all of the variance in color, height and textures! Have you rooted the things that you cut or pruned off?
Most of all my various perrinals are from cuttings. See my video on this
Picked up 7 of the new Starblast Ciffon to plant slightly behind my row of Burkwood and Doublefile Viburnum and fill the coming mounding habit gap. Have another Rose of Sharon that'd been my favorite for years, ended up tree forming it and pulling it back upright with a ratchet strap since it was steadily tipping to one side. At any rate, lovely plants.
what can i plant with a rose of sharon around a pool fence to make a nice uniform privacy barrier , do not want to be totally hidden , but i was thinking a rose of sharon and then a drawf grass, and repeat that all around pool...thoughts? I had beautiful knock out roses but they all got rosette disease :(
Barberry yellow or red. I would recommend gold pillar barberry. It more upright than regular ones which I find goes good with the ros . They just get 4 ft wide and 1.5 tall regular barberries get😊 6 ft tall and 6 ft wide. I know cause I just pruned some that side now they are 6 ft tall and 3 foot wide . Iprunded stems at bottom of plant
Such a beautiful garden! Your Rose of Sharon trees are stunning. Also love the Cleome flowers. Thanks for sharing your expansive knowledge with us!
Just literally bought my first Rose of Sharon, in the dormant stage and isn't showing any signs of growth. I plan on planting it after the last frost, to avoid any possibility of damage caused by the cold on new growth. The garden tour was beautiful, and the pruning tips are very valuable to know and to do, thanks.
Hi Tim! I believe I’ve watched all your past videos and was glad to see you made a new one! I love your rose of Sharon gardens! I used to work in Grayson, KY back when I used to live down near Portsmouth, OH. I’m in Dayton, OH now but miss them hills of KY! Keep it up!
It’s hard to get ky out of your system
@@timarnzen4900 it sure is!! I have family in Georgetown but don’t get down there that way at all but all of Kentucky is so beautiful!
Your gardens are so lovely! (It’s hard to realize when you’re filming but moving the camera around as quickly as one does one’s eyes makes for a dizzying video which is hard for some of us to watch)! You have piqued my interest in Rose of Sharon standards and I may try to do that myself; I have been successful with hydrangeas.
Thank you for sharing! I'm a new gardener and you have inspired me to grow Rose of Sharon.
Does rose of sharon lose leaves in winter
Beautiful, sir.
Wow! I am so jealous of all your Rose of Sharons!!! Such a beautiful and peaceful garden!!! Thank you for sharing💜💜💜
🤩 wow you are awesome! Gorgeous garden.
Every time I see your garden, it's so inspiring - all this joyful color! I just love that.
What a gorgeous garden!!!You answered the exact question I had about tree form rose of Sharon!!! I'm retired and decided since I have always had excellent results propagating plants, I could make a little on the side by starting a small backyard nursery. From a couple of bushes that were in bloom on an overgrown vacant lot, I took about 4 very long branches and after preparing them to pot, I wound up with over 150 cuttings!! A week later, I happened to see a beautiful pink Rose of Sharon tree that had a trunk probably 10" in diameter. Yours is the only source on "limbing up" the bushes into trees that I've found! Thank you so much!!!!
Glad for your comment thanks and enjoy gardening
