    You said you are still struggling with your lungs. I have been sick with Long covid for 6 months this year, everything is fine with me except my lungs will not recover and the inflammation will not go away and has moved into my heart. After doing a lot of research, I asked my doctor for a corticosteroid shot. What it does is stops the inflammation response in your body which gives your lungs time to heal and your immune system a chance to regulate. I just took my first shot yesterday and within 24 hours I already feel way better than before, I actually feel like i have a chance to heal from this now as before I was also active and outgoing but cant do anything now without being out of breathe. I am going to try the protein powder with black seed oil and Vitamin B12 from here on out. I would like to know though, it has been a year since you posted this video, are your lungs recovered ?

    Yes I am a firm believer that we should be as bright as possible. I just got me a flou green helmet and construction orange T-shirts. And I installed a rear view camera on my bike, it might help me to see if there is someone texting and heading towards me on a collision course! And I've also noticed that almost always when I'm on the road whether I'm driving my truck or bicycling I can smell weed! People are driving and smoking weed! I have been bicycling for decades and everytime I get on my bike I just keep wondering is today the day I get hit?

    Good video! As much as I would like to lay off the brakes, I find I need to stay on them to maintain stability on the loose downhill stuff. There have been a few times on downhill curves with loose gravel where I thought I would have lost control if I would have not kept the bike speed under control. I tend to be a bit cautious though.

    I’ve recently learned to think of transportation & workplace safety as an ecosystem. Everything and everyone within that ecosystem has some impact on safety in general. Something I found particularly interesting was the HFACS approach to safety. While it’s more commonly used by airline pilots, it can be applied to cycling as well. It has multiple levels. Unsafe acts are what directly lead to incidents. These could be car drivers changing lanes without looking, cyclists swerving out or suddenly joining/crossing a roadway without looking, motorists driving too close to cyclists, road rage by motorists, tailgating, reversing out of driveway without looking, or even the rare but extremely dangerous case of intentional harassment by an idiot hiding in a motorised metal cage. These are caused by preconditions such as low visibility, fatigue, drugs and alcohol and adverse mental states. This means ensuring street lighting is good, cyclists wear bright high visibility clothing, make use of lights when it is dark, and motorists ensuring their headlights are working correctly and their vehicles are road worthy. Unsafe supervision happens in South Australia quite often when police are not enforcing several road rules. They decide to target speed only, never have I seen a car pulled over for overtaking a cyclist too close. The cops also don’t enforce the law of people must keep left unless overtaking (80km/h or over) which affects motorists trying to actually pass slow cars, it would be good if those two things were policed. Finally bringing me to organisational influences. This includes culture: so many bogans on Facebook making anti cyclist comments that are so concerning they should lose their license on the spot. So many joking about causing serious harm or murdering other people because they hate bikes. Another key organisational influence is road design; councils are the top of the ecosystem. Their participation in road safety and construction of cycling infrastructure is important. When you cross the council line from unley to Marion you see this in action. Unley, a council that sees cycling as integral to their future and has permanent bicycle lanes and local residents who are used to sharing the road with cyclists. Once you get into the Marion council on cross road you soon encounter parked cars in the side of the road, outdated chip seal pavements and drivers that don’t give you room and watch those silly bogan Facebook videos that tell them cyclists should get off the road. I know this is a long comment but there’s a heap more to discuss. This issue is important to so many people. Your video here is the perfect example of what we need, a short video that gets right to the point and explains the importance of visibility and the danger of cars. The very real danger. Cycling is about marginal gains! Anyone whether a cyclist or not can play their part, cyclists, motorists, then councils. Marginal safety gains help us get closer to zero. Great message and keep spreading awareness about road safety, transport related accidents have no place in our modern society. One day in my lifetime I hope to see zero.

    • @CyclewithSerafina
      @CyclewithSerafina 2 дня назад

      Spot on, I agree with all you have said ✅ It's an important discussion and serious consequences when we get it wrong. There's no one to blame, but all of us as a society. You summed it up well in your final comment "Cycling is about marginal gains! Anyone whether a cyclist or not can play their part, cyclists, motorists, then councils. Marginal safety gains help us get closer to zero" 🙏🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

    I have 26 x1.75 tires and tubes. I need a new back wheel, but when I ordered a 26 inch coaster brake back wheel, I recieved a wheel too small for my tires. It measured 22 and 1/4 across, so I sent it back to be exchanged but got another one the same smaller size. My front wheel measures 24" across with a 26x1.75 tire...so it totals 26". Did I just get the same wrong wheel twice? Or did I do something wrong?

    • @recyclebicyclesales
      @recyclebicyclesales 2 дня назад

      Hey @lauriegardiner8135 that’s a great question. Some wheels can be measured by the circumference rather than diameter. It’s usually measured in millimetres. I think your wheel would be about 2023mm. Maybe see if you can order one of them.

    I started with plant based protein two weeks ago. After 4 days I somehow felt better. For the first time in 10 months (I have long-covid) I was able to have a 60 minute walk. Before I was not able to walk longer than 7 minutes without getting tired and cramped calves. Before I needed almost a week of rest and laying on the couch after having a normal 5-minute bike ride. I think I'm not ready yet to take a bike ride. However last week I made a 1 hour walk four times. Without any complications. The only problem I still have is to do simple things that involve muscle use. For example while carrying a shopping bag my arm muscles immediately start to sour and get tired. Or why walking up the stairs at home my leg muscles immediately start to get tired and sour. Hope this will get better. The next step is to experiment with creatine. Hope this will help. Hi Chef, I really enjoyed your talk and wanted to compliment you on your speaking skills and impressive weight loss of 5kg in 6 weeks-well done! However, I have a slightly different perspective on sugar. In my own experience with cycling, I've found that consuming sugar, particularly in the form of low-fat, high-carb foods like fruit and even white sugar water, hasn't caused me any weight gain. In fact, I've been eating high amounts of sugar, sometimes half a bag of CSR sugar in a day, for over a year while maintaining a lean physique. My cycling performance has also improved, with me consistently pushing further and breaking personal bests. I noticed that the sugary foods you highlighted, such as chocolate cake, also contain high amounts of fat from animal products, like eggs, which are higher in fat and cholesterol. This combination is very different from eating sugar alone or in naturally low-fat foods like fruit, which you also mentioned positively. (although saying that bananas which are too ripe contain too much sugar is wrong, no such thing as too much) While I do occasionally eat animal products, I understand that they make you bigger because of their fat content which is why its important to only eat animal products post-workout or to get just enough b12 without supplementing. Another commenter mentioned Harley Johnstone's book, and I have to say I agree with their perspective. But I'm not just promoting sugar because of Durianrider-I've achieved these personal results myself. Just wanted to share that in my case, sugar hasn't had the negative effects often associated with it, especially when paired with a high-carb, low-fat approach. Thanks again for the insightful discussion!

      Message below from Josh 🤗 Hi Austin Thanks for your response Interesting perspective on sugar, all I can say is when your young and active, excessive amounts of anything don’t seem to have an affect. Sugar, alcohol, smoking, sleep deprivation in particular…water off a ducks back. Now that I’m older, no alcohol, sleep well and no excessive sugar because I would take ages to recover. With sugar, medical science says their is more than enough in foods you already eat. Being a diabetic due to my previous lifestyle choices based around high sugar, high carbs and high fats, I can assure you sugar will not be your friend as you get older. Sugar and overall diet will have a direct effect on shortening my life, although I am currently in balance the past will catch up with me. Weight gain, tick High blood pressure, tick Heart disease, tick Liver disease, tick Diabetes, tick All results of long and sustained excessive sugar intake. That said, everyone is different. Thank you for your views and engaging in the subject, I wish you well. If you see a big bloke cycling in fat lad at the back gear, come say hello Cheers Fat Chef Slim Ps - have now lost 14kg, 6 to go

      @@CyclewithSerafina Hey Chef, Thanks for sharing your insights. I completely agree-when you’re young and active, it feels like you can handle just about anything. I’ve tested those limits myself. The other weekend, I did a 190 km ride from Adelaide to Victor Harbor and back. The night before, I had around 18 standard drinks, got home at 2:30am barely slept 2 hours, and when I checked my BAC before leaving at 5am with a BACtrack, it was still at 0.13%. I figured being young, I could push through, but starting a ride like that with such a high BAC% was a real challenge. I felt terrible the whole way, barely managing less than a watt per kilo. You’re right-youth can get you through a lot, but there are limits, and I definitely hit them that day. I really respect how you’ve adjusted your lifestyle - sober is a great way to live; I will quit drinking next year when I start flying real airplanes. (Zero tolerance for alcohol in CASA). While cutting back on sugar isn’t something that I’m particularly concerned about for myself, it’s clearly working for you, and like you said everyone is different. Keep at it! Cheers, Austin

    What Paul said about vulnerability is why I decided not to ride on city roads or any roads that did not have cycle lanes. Perhaps my experience as a motorcyclist influenced that decision but it is clear to me that some drivers just do not see you and others do not care. That's the way it is and nothing will change that.

    • @CyclewithSerafina
      @CyclewithSerafina 9 дней назад

      I do believe it will change, over time, other countries are good examples of this. I'm not sure where you live, but Australia is still a young society, and we are still very car dependent. It is changing slowing, and when more people ride bikes, they will positively influence this change 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

Note that there is a physical reason why scanning drivers can miss items like motor cycles, cycles would be worse and bright clothing does not help a lot.

    What some motorists and in particular lorry drivers dont understand is the draft they create when passing. Cycling into a head wind is bad enough, when a lorry comes in the opposite direction doing 60+ it creates a sort of vortex which then creates problems with cars and lorries behind you.... same when a lorry passes close from behind you...

    Forty five years ago I had a car accident where an older gentleman ran out from between some stopped cars and I hit him (about 30 kph). He was in a coma for a few months and eventually revived, but as he was 75 years old never fully recovered. At the time of the accident it was in the evening and nearly dark. The main issue was that he was wearing black clothing head to foot, including a black hat, gloves, and shoes. I didn't see him until he hit the front of the car. It was a horrific situation that I will always remember, but the main takeaway is that he didn't give me the chance to avoid him. If he had been wearing anything at all that wasn't black there is a good possibility that we could have dodged something that neither of us wanted. Years later I got into bicycle touring and quickly noticed that most cycle clothing and gear is black. It has gotten better over the years, but even today its difficult to find many things that aren't camouflaged. My panniers are bright red coloured, most of my clothing is safety yellow, and there are lights on the bike front and rear. Even the bike is yellow with stainless steel fenders. The standing joke is that if someone can't see me then they shouldn't be driving. Sometimes I get the opposite effect where drivers panic and stop when they see me, which creates its own set of issues. But at least they can make a decision.

    I have to laugh as more motorists are on their phones, applying make-up, and not paying attention driving. I am a long time cyclist, have done many races, triathlons, and regular rides. From 1977 to 2010 I have had zero issues with motorists. 2011 to 2020, I have been hit three times while training on the road. Luckily, just damage to my road bike and a few scrapes. My worst wreck came 2023 when I decided to ride my Mountain Bike on the side walk to be safe. An SUV side mirror clipped me and I spent 3 days on the ICU. I now ride strictly closed trails whether be paved or cross county stuff. Motorists, who have never ridden a bike....SUCK!

    The problem is not that drivers (all vehicles) don't see. The problem is that most drivers are only looking for big motor vehicles. I have been riding with both a front and rear flashing LEDs (irregular pattern for more visibility) for the last eight or nine years. I always buy the best ones as they come out. Three years ago I was hit by a driver of a SUV. The driver told the police (I was unconscious) that she hadn't see me despite the LEDs. She was in a hurry to get to the kindergarten. I was put in a chemical induced coma for a week. It took me more than a year of rehab and multiple reconstructive surgeries (among other things head trauma, perforated lung, broken vertebrae, ribs, elbow*, ...). *The worst possible type of fracture that your body can sustain. I have decided to buy fluo yellow shoes, helmet and gloves and clothing kits with fluo yellow accents. I look like a clown but I don't care. I want to be seen Guess what. I have been hit again a year and a half ago again by a SUV driver. Fortunately I wasn't seriously injured. What was the driver's excuse this time ? Yes, you guessed it. _I didn't see you._

      I do honestly believe that should any cyclist is wearing bright clothing, has noticeable lighting, being respectful of the biking laws and is hit. The laws in any country should be universal, Pay all incurred medical costs for the accident and future, pay a hefty fine, (of at least 50% of that individuals last yearly income, gross), lose their license for 2 years, do community service for 5 years. It actually needs some teeth in these penalties, otherwise we get the same excuses. If your ability to drive, paying for those costs are high enough, eventually they will be less. Diving while distracted, we all know that most likely this is the cause of the accidents. I do not care about what folks think about intervention into driving from any government agency. Here in good old USA, I still believe that driving is a privilege, not a right. Therefore vehicle safety features should include that the car go into detune and eyes forward while in the vehicle, both hands on the wheel, no screens, tvs, etc.. One is in the vehicle driving to do one thing and is to get from one point to another. If you cannot do this in a safe matter than take Uber, taxi, limo, etc.. Yes I am a cyclist. Whenever I am in my vehicle, there are no distractions, not even the radio. My mind and focus is completely on the road. Sorry for the rant. Just way too many folks who do not want to be held accountable.

    I do NOT give my life to complete strangers, nor do I trust them with my life. The reality is that motorists have a list of selfish motives that cause them to want to avoid hitting a cyclist. They do not want to do any of the following things: A) Damage their vehicle; B) Be involved in an accident because it will tie them up for at least an hour; C) Cause an accident because their insurance rates will be increased, and they may possibly be sued. Many of them do not want to hurt or kill someone, but I don't rely on any drivers feeling that way. I place my trust in their own selfish interests. As for cyclists making themselves as visible as possible, that has been shown to be of very limited value. It only works for motorists who are very conscientious. But the run of the mill driver sees a cyclist in high-vis and ignores them with some contempt. I am not saying that cyclists should essentially be camouflaged, not at all. Wear clothes that are easy to see, but don't look like a freak who is operating in utter fear.

      Intense bright blinking-flashing rear lights are my go to accessory for being seen from behind in traffic and my yellowish greenish helmet could probably be seen from outer space because it’s so bright and makes me visible from all directions. Most of all I simply won’t ride on a highway or any rode that feels like one with cars and trucks whizzing by. Oh yes, I do have a headlight that’s as effective as my rear light. I do watch carefully for distracted drivers pulling out of driveways and for drivers not expecting to see a bicycle at an intersection for instance. I’m more of a bike path small city cyclist than anything else, preferring roads that I’m familiar with enabling me to know what’s safe and what isn’t in advance. As for clothing I wear regular colors so I can visit a coffee shop and not blind people. Rarely turn on my lights since I often plan rides that involve minimal interaction with cars.

    As a commuter in Ireland this is obvious. I always wear a high vis vest or jacket. Bright orange is more visible in daylight than yellow. And also always flashing lights front and back both day and night..

      Yes, a year or so ago in NJ a bicyclist was killed on a highway at night. This may have been borne out of necessity, but I remember it being reported that she didn't have any lights.

    The _climate_ on the road is simply the mirror of our society where a certain insecure conservative portion of the majority feels threatened by any group that may lead them to think that *_THEY_* jeopardize the former's precarious privileged in any way. *_And these are the people I'm most afraid of when I'm on the road !_* Usual steps to antagonize these two groups of people: Bring in the conservative media who's single purpose is to distract from the real issues and those responsible. Convince these conservative people that they are entitled to a certain status quo that is reassuring and comfortable to them. Feed information that the presence of an emerging _group_ of people as a threat to the status quo. Your status quo. You're the victim. To achieve this goal dehumanize and describe the members of this _group_ as all the same. Describe this group as dangerous and ill intented. They have a vile agenda.They want to take away something from you and impede on your freedom. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. ... To create a violent tribal response. Solution : Make yourself visible is only part of the solution in this specific case but, in a way, the more visible you are, the more annoying you get to those who wants to make your group literally disappear. Once it's done, ... *_STOP VICTIM SHAMING AND STOP PUTTING THE RESPONSIBILITY ON THE VICTIMS !_* Look for real solutions long term solutions. Fight and debunk the conservative media arguments with a proper redefinition of the problem and propose real solutions and sell these with benefits for those against any change. In our case, it's not the presence of cyclists on the the road but rather the impact and numbef of injuries and deaths. Ask, again and again to your governments and to the authorities to protect these minority groups through, rules, laws and implement these solutions which are mostly, but not exclusively, infrastructures in our case. (Slow but we've made progress) Educate these conservative minds that have never been good at getting educated, change their perception and behaviors. (Good luck with that one !) The non conservative and more open minded people will change with time.

      Change is never easy, and we have to keep at it, slowly, slowly, bit by bit, from all angles untill it becomes the norm. We live in a democracy, we can influence change with numbers, so let's get more people on bikes 🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️🚴🚴🚴‍♀️

    I always use a Mirror & Bike Radar on country roads gives me 15 seconds of warning if I'm briefly unaware of approaching cars. As for truck drivers I have always found them decent on our interstate roads. I carry a UHF radio & have it open on the truckers channel. If you pick up a signal you have warning that a truck is up to 3km away. A simple message like "cyclist at 150km marker heading west" is very helpful. The key thing though is pulling left if a vehicle is heading towards you, so motor vehicles can pass each other. In these situations always scope for a bailout point on the verge. Thanks Paul for your ideas.
