A little while ago I found an Olympus Flex A, and it quickly became one of my favorite cameras. I couldn't really find any information about it anywhere, which makes sense given its relative obscurity. After shooting several rolls and carrying it around for a few months, I wanted to make a video to give a short overview of the camera, as well as share some sample images.

My uncle suffered a stroke in October of 2016. It wasn't until two years later, in October of 2018, that I was able to go back to Taiwan to see him. I've documented some of the time I've been able to spend with him, although I know it's not enough to express how much he means to us. Filmed mostly with a GoPro 5 Session, and some audio by the Zoom H4N.

    I wore out two Autocords back in the 70's, and still have two of them. Loved the images, but also have always hated the square format. A screen marked with 645 lines helps. People used to say that 6x6 is just a 645 camera that you don't have to rotate for horizontal or vertical. Sure, but I still hate looking at a square image. Images are fabulous, however.

Also it takes bay 2 filters but not bay 2 hoods... So it might be a proprietary hood which means the chances of finding one are probably next to zero.

    It’s an interesting fact that it’s a non-Rollei f2.8 TLR, but other than that it has poor functionality (comparable more to the budget Rolleicord than the flex) and It’s absurdly expensive for being a Japanese TLR, for $500 bucks I’ll get a real Rolleiflex, a 2.8C or D.

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung 2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. For that price, I probably wouldn't get it either, but I got it mine for a fraction of that. In terms of poor functionality, It certainly doesn't do as much automatically as a Rolleiflex, but I don't think anything about it could be considered poor. Having handled both, the build quality definitely holds its own.

    To where do you advance when using 120 film in the 220 holder? I feel like when just lining up the arrows the first frame is partly covered by the tape securing the film to the backing

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung 2 года назад

      That may be something to dial in with each filmstock, since different manufacturers have longer or shorter sections of film on the backing paper. I normally do about 1/8th of a turn before the arrows lineup, and that's mostly fine, but I also keep in mind that maybe that first shot won't turn out.

  • @juliowagner4985
    @juliowagner4985 2 года назад

    Great video. I remember bring frustrated about not getting that last bit of film for another frame(I personally own a 645pro tl and a 645 afd). A solution to this issue is when loading film, to not completely line the arrow to the holder's arrow. This creates the extra bit of room for an "extra" frame. However, I would recommend not relying on this last frame solution to be absolute. I have done this with both cameras (manual and auto), and this solution primarily to manual users.

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung 2 года назад

      The times that I've used the 120 insert, I've always found that there's ample room for a 16th shot at the end of the negative, the camera just wouldn't let me take it. Not completely lining up the arrow is a good trick though!

    That is a great-looking camera. I have a couple of Mamiya TLRs and a Yashica. You mentioned that accessories, including the leather replacement, are hard to find. I have a number of Mamiya M645s and I have paid up to $30 for a leather replacement kit. I have a few more that I am working on now. I took measurements on the M645 items to include the prisms and I am making templates to 3d print them and cut my material to repair or replace all of the leather on these cameras. What is so nice about this is I can do that for just about any camera if I have the measurements to go by. It takes a little time, but it is worth it. The replacement material is normally used for patching holes on chairs or sofas.
