Befriending Hawthorn
Просмотров 193 месяца назад
Hawthorn is one of the gems of the Fall harvest. I love gathering the spring flowers, tender leaves, fall haws...even their protective thorns and infusing them all in brandy for a heart elixir. It is one of the best heart tonics there is. And so good for my heart to gather in every season. The best time to gather haws is after the first frost, but I always get impatient and gather many when the...
Extended Use of Poke Leaves
Просмотров 393 месяца назад
Pokeweed, is a delectable edible and readily available here in the South. It's leaves and early shoots are two of my favorite wild offerings. The leaves and shoots are best eaten when young as long as they are properly prepared but they can be enjoyed much later throughout the Summer as well. I love them so much that I gather several gallons of them in May and June, boil off the toxins and free...

The Purpose of Flowers

Flowers are the part of the green wallpaper of nature that pop out and reveal identity. They are advertisements to pollinators to come and gather the nectar and in so doing spread the pollen to continue the cycle of life. This is a portion of my full Teaching Tuesday class on Edible Flowers Part One. If you want to hear the entire teaching here is that link. ruclips.net/video/6qSpf8bGfuE/видео....

Yucca Blossoms Pasta

Yucca is an amazing plant FULL of wild gifts from food to string. I love eating the Yucca asparagus (shoots) and the flower buds and seed pods BUT the Yucca flowers are an amazing pasta substitute. Gluten free!! Watch my wild cooking demo where I used the Yucca blossoms to make Yucca Alfredo.
Loupe Looking at the Beauty of Flowers
Просмотров 103 месяца назад
One of the most magical tools I have in my foragers belt is a jeweler's loupe. Looking at the beauty of nature through this lens of magnification has opened up a world of wonder for me. Whether it is inspecting the frilly stamens of a purple Spiderwort flower, observing the mandibles of a Japanese beetle munching an Evening Primrose leaf, or gawking at the jeweled prisms of morning dew catching...

Peacocks on an Adventure
Просмотров 2905 месяцев назад
Sitting on the front porch, well after dusk, I thought I spied wild turkeys walking along our road so I went to get a closer look. Turns out the 'turkeys' were four peacocks that I recognized as belonging to a nearby farm. Alerting Walton, he headed over to rescue them from coyotes and other night time dangers. But they were determined to have their freedom and evaded our search in the woods al...

Because you intrduced the twins by name it would have been nice and polite to know the third childs name
Beautiful photograph and great information...as always!
Just liked, subd, shared.
You can set your ferments in bowls to keep them from making a mess.
Such a great idea! Thank you.
This simple loupe has changed the way I see things. I carry one with me always. Its fun to start with a lower loupe magnification and observe, or draw what you see...then up the magnification and observe the 'more' that wasn't visible. XO
Thank you, again, for honoring our CREATOR and the Beauty of HIS Creation ♥
Amen!! The whole earth is full of God's Glory!
I love the practicality of this.
It's only part one of my three part flower series. It just takes so long to overlay them, I can't promise when the rest will be on YT. Working on my poisonous plants series next.
I have magenta lambs quarters and also amaranth growing like crazy here! Going to dehydrate the leaves for sure and start incorporating the leaves!!
I love the magenta Lambsquarter leaves! I used to have them but for some reason I didn't let them go to seed. They are not near as common. I love dehydrating LQ leaves and powdering them for a flour extender or to shake into eggs for the added nutrition. Blessings to you!
Very informative. Lovely displays. God bless.
Thanks so much for your encouraging words! It takes time to overlay with pictures but I think it is far more educational to the viewer when I do.
I loved this video, Holly! Very beautiful, and really appreciated the exhortation to be still, and not to fear! Also wanted to let you know- The plant you identified as Poison Ivy (toward the end of the video,) is actually Box Elder- which looks a lot like Poison Ivy, but is actually in the Maple family, and not poisonous. (The edges of the leaf are different.)
Beautiful!
Are you doing anything in October? I will be there then.
every Friday night is a plant walk up till November! I look forward to meeting you! I also teach a plant intensive or a foraging adventure every Wednesday morning :)
@@WildBlessingsHollyDrake I really hope it works out to join you! 😊
Do I need to pre-register for Wednesday morning or Friday evening?
@@kayorr2683 yes so I can be prepared for each participant. I try to make event pages for each class but at the very least just PM me on FB or send me an email through my website. Blessings!
Thank you!@@WildBlessingsHollyDrake
dried 12 pounds of elderberry this year! It dried down to 2 pounds, so its a 1/6 ratio dried which was fascinating.
Thank you-- Nice garden!
I don't think I've ever seen a white one!
Beautiful! Is the white one a different breed or albino?
Not sure
Thank you for this!
Holly, the volume is quite low. I read the transcript though. Great teaching!
Your teachings really resonate and motivate! Cheers!
Excellent! I do ecological restoration, would love to chat with you on some topics!
My new favorite channel! Liked and subbed!
Wow finding your encouraging comment was a treat!! Glad you found me! Feel free to join my private foraging group on FaceBook, just ask to join. Wild Blessings w/ Holly Drake
burdock is really easy to cultivate.. some people build tall boxes.. 3 or 4 feet tall but 6 inch x 6 inch square.. then they fill the box with soil and plant the burdock in the top.. the box is made in such a way that one side can be removed to harvest the root...roots can grow up to 4 feet long.. also the seeds can yield a good cooking oil...they are 50% oil....the seeds can be cold pressed for the oil
I had never heard about seeds yielding a cooking oil! Can you send me the info on this?
I want to get to know this beautiful plant that God has given us! Thank you for sharing ♥
Exploring truth reflected in God's creation is balm to the soul!! God bless you really big!
My next goal, milkweed soap!
Let me know how that turns out. I am not a soap maker but it does fascinate me. Have you ever made soap with Lambsquarter roots?
😘
Great timing to be new to your channel! Such a thrill to gather elder flowers along the American River in Sacramento yesterday. I am growing leeks, too, for the first time. Your tips are so interesting! My elder tree is in its 2nd summer. My yellow dock went to seed! Yes, an herbalist's hands are never bored! I think you got yourself your 23rd Patreon supporter here! Best to you!!
Hi Lori! So glad you joined me! Thank you SO much for the encouraging words and Patreon support. What a BLESSING!!! If you are on Facebook, consider joining my private foraging group "Wild Blessings w/ Holly Drake" , just ask to join. I'll send you a link to my Elder Recipes as soon as it is completed (very soon!) Thanks for making my day!
I'm sure being there is a complete experience.
Nature engages all our senses!! I learn best by rolling in things and of course EATING! Wild riches!
Oh Zamira! How great to hear from you!!!! Green Deane claims that Burdock doesn’t grow in Florida. Hmmmm. Try the trash can method 🙃
You are always such an inspiration. Due to work and school I've gotten away from herbs but I plan on getting back to nature. And you just gave me an idea to plant burdock. I hope it grows in central florida. Xoxo
Agreed. To God be the glory! His creation is amazing.
I always learn so much in your videos! Plants, moons, circadian rhythm, and when to get a haircut.
To God be the glory!
This looks good 👍🏼, Thank you 🙏
I collect the dandelion seeds to sprout in winter. I learned that from Linda Runyon
I habe tears of joy finding your channel. I just watched your video with the son on my beloved wild friend Linda Runyon. I left a reaction on that video. I hope you can go and read it. She was a great blessing to me. Thank you for keeping Linda alive in your work. God bless you💚
I first discovered Linda back in 1988 when I was living in a two room cabin in the woods in NYS. I had just became vegan and there was an article about her in vegetarian times magazine. I called to order one of her books and it turned into years of phone conversations. I got to meet her once in Syracuse with one of her sons. Linda was and will always be a blessing to me and many others. She treated me like one of her sons. I always told her I wish she was my mom. I lost track of her in 2009. It brings tears to my eyes when I think of her. Mostly tears of joy. Rest in peace my dear and wild friend.💚 Ed Andrus
8:11 Clock or remove the ‘L’ & get the name? 😳
Are your wonderful notes you refer to available to us in some form? I cannot write down all you say and don't wish to miss anything. You are a wealth of information. Just subscribed
Holly, I made them with my ESL students at church last Easter. They came to class, and I gave them an apron and the recipe and sent them into the kitchen with partners. While the rolls were baking, we studied the story from the Bible and then enjoyed the empty tomb rolls!
Awesome!!! What a blessing
I love the concept of getting to know a plant like you would a person. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing
How long do you roast the roots and at what temperature?
I have researched this and EVERYONE says something different. I tend to err on the side of low temp and longer roast until you get the aroma and darkness so as to keep all the healing constituents. 250 oven for as long as it takes. ;). Happy experimenting!!
Holly Joy, thank you so much for your bountiful gift of sharing this amazing video containing such abundant blessings. Not only rich with your teachings & wisdom, but deeply inspiring with stories of your most incredible, brilliant Brian. Your powerful testimony about how God’s love sustained you & Jason through your heartbreaking loss moved me to tears & renewed my faith. So many stunning stories!! Jason’s 42 year old drawing of the little grain of wheat falling from the stalk, along with the passage from Ecclesiastes 3:14 is mindblowing!! Finding the seed pod that had turned black & orange & you reading Psalms 102. Discovering Brian’s prison penpal, Al, & his extraordinary story unfolding, with you & Jason continuing Brian’s support & encouragement. All the scriptures & miracles appearing with such perfect timing, unmistakable signs that God was with you, & His will was being fulfilled in each of your lives!! Doesn’t get any more spectacular than that!! One in 400 trillion odds against Brian or any of us even being born?! Beyond solid proof that God loves, values & created each of us for His divine purpose. All your hard work adding the amazing photos overlaying the video was so worth it, perfectly illustrating the stories, greatly enhancing them. I don’t know how you got through making this video, with your heart so tender at the anniversary of losing your beloved Brian. On second thought, yes, I do. Your memorable miracle stories explain how.
Glory to God for all of this abundance He's gifted even in this fallen world!
Thank you for more chickweed! Love your content
Too bad your lord wanted to keep you ignorant. Uninformed people are easier to lead and accept any explnanation. Even untruths. Is that why your political leaders are so against “wokeism”. The opposite is awake and aware.
Thank you so much. Love to you and yours.
How are you Rhonda, shoot me a text. Praying for you!
Enjoyed your nice poem God is so good to us and i need reminded often to set and be still and just spend time with God. Sad story bout your sweet doggie baby. ❤🙏for you too.
Thanks for watching Tammy. Sounds like we are kindred spirits ❤

Indeed grateful for every season! God Bless Holly!
Hi Karen!!! You are one of my wild hereos!
I totally would love to call you - -perhaps two weeks Saturday? I am doing winter survival walks this weekend!@@WildBlessingsHollyDrake
@WildBlessingsHollyDrake This is so beautifully done, expertly edited using your many gorgeous photos & abundant wild offerings. The dead of winter seems like a time of dormancy & inactivity, but you make it come alive, teaching us the forager’s way of putting this downtime to excellent use. Love that you show us by your fine example how to continue engaging with nature, enjoying & appreciating all the great opportunities the winter season has to offer!! Your vast wealth of knowledge & experience with every aspect of foraging, combined with your impressive photography, writing & video editing skills, make this a “Must Watch!” piece!! Thank you, Holly Joy, for all you do & for your generous, sharing spirit!! Love you!!
