DIY Speakers - $30 and 30 min - Trying “Tech Ingredients” Build
Просмотров 22 тыс.4 года назад
I caught a video by RUclipsr Tech Ingredients recently and was intrigued by some DIY speakers he made. Seemed too good to be true but the guy was very thorough in his approach, trying several different iterations before settling on the best one. I decided to give it a whirl, watch the video to see my thoughts. Link to original video by Tech Ingredients: ruclips.net/video/zdkyGDqU7xA/видео.html

Vinyl Styl Deep Groove Record Cleaner Review
Просмотров 19 тыс.4 года назад
My take on the best budget vinyl cleaning system, much better than the Spin Clean
Thanks bro Great video
The only difference is the drying rack otherwise they are exactly the same method of cleaning lp s.
I was somewhat dismayed at your review since you did it without even physically doing evaluation. First of all, I have found that doing over 100 cleanings, the labels are not severely effected. Even though the record is rotated, the center does not effectively come in contace with the cleaning fluid since the level of fluid does not touch the center. Only a small amount of fluid touches the label and the label is still preserved. And using the clean, lint free cloths to dry the "cleaned" record does not tranfer any contaminate to the record. As a side note, I can visually inspect the record for any abnormality. And using Anti-Static inner covers negates your reference to the static problem, if there was one. For me, using new, antistatic interior record is one part is helping restore and keeping my older record in good condition. The downside of Spin Clean is the initial cost but with the number of records one can clean with one solution make the unit more cost effective. For the individual who wants a medium range in cost of a unit and, as I have found, an effective way to do a user friendly cleaning action, I recommend the Spin Clean.
never had any liquid dripping on my labels using the spin clean
Great video. On mine, when the weighted arm lifts up, the needle arm doesn’t fall and I can’t tell why. Is there some spring or linkage that drops the needle arm, or perhaps another weight at the end?
I have the PS-LX510 and it plays records and tracks fine, but I have to use the manual controls to move and drop the needle to start the play. If I push the play button, it will go to the edge of the record. Hover for a second and then return back. Any idea why this happens?
Hi, would any of the adjustments shown in your video fix the thumping noise when the chassis moves? I’ve checked the belt and lubrication and all seems fine but still get the thumping noise.
i'd seen these but had no idea they were so well thought out, i may try
Thanks for the video, I have Mitsubishi MC8000 and tonearm dose not automatically move forward, it does move automatically in the beginning but does not move once start playing, any advice is welcome. TIA
What's probably going on is the small belt in the drive that advances the arm needs replacement. With a long period of disuse the belt takes a 'set' and becomes permanently oblong (the pulley on the motor is quite small, the one on the worm drive is larger). The motor turns at high speed on lead-in, and while playing the motor makes tiny movements, one or two revolutions at a time. the oblong belt will grip at high speed but not for playing. The advantage you have is since it is vertical you can take off the back cover and watch and fix all this easily. It looks like the tracking belt is an SBS 3.5.
Thanks very much 🙏
I found this video by typing "what amplifier for Tech Ingredients speakers". Still no answer to what amplifier to use... What is your "Mac" amplifier? Any help much appreciated.
Very helpful! Thanks to you I could correctly adjust my tracking tonearm and playing my records again.
I have both a spin clean and a Vevor Ultrasonic Cleaner. I stop using the Spin Clean as it was too time consuming, especially since I have almost 5000 records. The Vevor does a great job as it leaves tons of evidence in the tank, plus cleaning 8 records at a time and with the addended fan attachment, it dries as it spins! And it also comes with a drying rack that holds 16 records.
I think you’ve sold me on this kit. I have the Studebaker cleaning kit (knock off Spin Clean) and I’m not impressed with it. I saw this Vinyl Style kit at local record shop but wanted to wait till I saw a review.
Excellent lesson! Thank you for posting!
Good deal ,thanks👍🍻
Fantastically explained. Keen on knowing more. Mine linear Tracking Turntable Stylus falls quickly on record.
I got a spin clean a few months ago and I noticed after cleaning about 100 records that 2 of them, the labels got wet and (only a little, usually not a problem) the dye came off a bit on the label, slightly discolouring it. That’s what brought me to your video. Gonna try this set up instead.
Following my post below, I watched the following video, in which the cleaning fluid gets a lot of praise: ruclips.net/video/_1fc7OhVksw/видео.html
Thanks for this. It's just what I need. I have the Disco Antistat, which is fine, to a point, but the Vinyl Styl is clearly superior. First of all, both products use the goat hair brushes, which aren't just better than the pads used in other models, but ideal for the job. However, I've found it difficult to impossible to remove them from my Disco Antistat. From your video, the Vinyl Styl wins on that score. Secondly, the Vinyl Styl label protectors are obviously superior to the ones provided with the Antistat, as they have the additional rubber o-ring seals and top seal. My labels get wet 90% of the time. Good advice about the cleaning fluid. What were they thinking?! The Antistat cleaning fluid is fine, as is the alternative I use, from Vinyl Shelter.
Look at the vinyl under a magnifying glass, you'll see that those brushes leave particles of themselves embedded in the grooves.
I see Tech Ingredients now recommends using suspended ceiling tiles in conjunction with the foam.. The acoustic ceiling pannels have a fatter lower frequency response but lack great high end responce, they play well together. . Also the size of your foam board also can get the low end filled out as well , But yes add a sub to fill that 150hz and lower out. One of the large attractions for these is with flat screen tv's we all have you can make flat speakers to match.
Love you and miss you man!
I bought three units and do a 3 tub system, pre wash, wash with diy formula and a rinse. Then dry. It's worked good so far.
Welcome back! Glad to see you posting again. I'm a blue vu fan too. Newer stuff though. Lots of good music 🎶 on your tag. Greg
Did you use the spin clean liquid by it self or did you add distilled water with it
The Spin Clean liquid is just a capful in the basin filled with distilled water.
@@thebluevu1097 ok
I think that the Vinyl Styl is much more modern looking than the Spin Clean. I like that it has a built in drying unit and label protector. Nearly all of my 45s don't have the larger hole cut out though.
Weather Report are great. I do prefer the early albums.
Marque Moon is one of my favorite albums of all time, great from start to finish and so many alternative bands copied his guitar style in the 80s. Nice batch of records and love the Shuggy album on the wall. I did see Vision Quest in the theatre
Labels don’t get wet with Spin Clean. You dry records on a rack
You missed one trick - the orange hub also acts as a grip for manually spinning the record. It's much better than spinning the edge of a record by hand.
Great video, very informative and helpful. You mentioned that you can buy the natural goat hair brushes. Can you tell me where I can buy this brush(s)?. I can't find anyone who sells the particular brushes that come with the Vinyl Styl Deep Groove Record Cleaner. Thank you.
for a couple months I've been using mine with a very positive result, I'm not using vinyl styl solution, I'm using it with spin clean solution instead.
May be 7videos I've watched today, about this intriguing speaker builds, there's only one that is not impressed and he claims that he's ang engineer working all his life about sound. Al the rest made me think of looking for the materials to build my own. 👌👌
To be honest it’s all relative. This is not a replacement for traditional high end speakers, but for a budget build it is waaaaay better than it should be. I was legitimately impressed for the budget and the final product, that said if you are an audiophile these speakers will disappoint.
My concern is that I wonder if the brushes might scratch the records. I understand that there will be a bunch of people who will tell me I’m crazy for wondering about this, but I’ve found in my experience that it’s better to err on the side of caution instead of erring on the side of ignorance. So I ask!!! I’ve had my Spin Clean several months now, and I’ve been very happy with it. I don’t use it on every record, just the really dirty ones. It always cleans the gunk off the record, and noticeably improves the sound. I don’t understand why people are concerned about how tight the pads are. The problem is, if the pads were any looser, then undoubtedly these same people would complain that they weren’t tight enough. My experience has been, yes, they’re tight, and sometimes with certain records that are thicker, it’s been a bit of a struggle to get the record out. But I always do, and no record has ever been damaged or had dirt rubbed into it from the pads. As long as you clean the pads after every use, excess dirt or dust isn’t an issue. It’s like everything else: keep it clean and it will do its job. But I will say that this system has some very clever parts included in it. I like the bottom coming off and becoming a drying rack. The label covers are nice too, but like others on this forum, I’ve never had a major issue with water getting on the labels in my Spin Clean. What little if any is easily and quickly wiped off. So to each his own. The important thing is that we’re keeping our records clean so we can continue to get the best sound from them for many years to come!!!
Just to address the scratching fear, I’ve done about a thousand records with this system and never damaged an album. I have nothing against the spinclean but the additional features of this system just make the entire chore of cleaning records much easier. Ultimately the important message is to clean your records, too many people complain about surface noise and static when a proper wet wash will help with these issues. Cheers!
@The Blue VU As I said: to each his own.
looks very similar to the original device the disco antistatic
I hung mine on some rubber bands and there is no vibration on the stands I made
Totally Agree 100%
wondering what the difference in results is from brush vs sponge, looking for one of these simply because of storage
I have access to a spinclean, any suggestions on how to do a comparison between the two? I haven’t come up with anything that would be a fair comparison. I might take an album, run it through one, then run it through the other to see if any additional dirt comes out. Then reversing the two to see if it’s the result of one over the other or if it’s just a matter of washing it twice (and running another record through twice on the same system to verify). Open to suggestions.
Excellent video but why didn't you take a dirty record and wipe the loose dirt or dust off with a soft cloth and then demonstrate your machine's effectiveness? Also doing a before and after sound test would be beneficial. It seems nobody doe this in their Demo videos. They always use shiny nice looking records.
Good suggestions, I’ve been meaning to redo this video ever since it was made (it was my first ever, many mistakes, but too many views to take it down), I may just take you up on the suggestions and record a version 2 of this.
this machine is out of stock :(

Great review of a great product. Sadly, the Vinyl Styl Deep Groove Record Washer System is now Out of Production no longer available for purchase. Here is a link to a very similar system: www.knosti.de/shop/en/vinyl/105/disco-antistat-record-cleaning-unit?c=13
Thanks for the video, I've used mine for about 2 years, maybe 500 or so cleanings with no issues and normally very positive results. I use my own cleaning solution 11oz distilled-1oz 99% alcohol and 2 drops of fotoflow. What Id like to find is another base to use as a rinse (I now use glass bread pan filled with distilled water). Also it would be nice to have some sort of raised arm so you can let some of the excess cleaning solution drip back into unit without holding it. I do use the Vinyl Vac after cleaning. Normally, only 1 vac rotation per side (to prevent static) and then I let album air dry in the included drying rack. I would put this system up against any of the 300-400 dollar record cleaning machines. I am hopeful that I see some good reviews of the new Humminguru ultrasonic record cleaner which I would use in conjunction with this unit, as I buy a lot of used vinyl.
Good Tip about the dust. Appreciate!
Larger rectangular shape sounds fuller with more lower midrange. Smaller square panels are thinner sounding unless 2 exciters per panel are used.
I have 1" x 2" x 2" styrofoam panels using the Dayton Audio DAEX25X4-4 Bullfrog Vented Disc Spider 25mm x 4 - 40 watt Exciter. I have a subwoofer and I EQ the highs down. Truly incredible sound. Friends that hear these speakers cannot believe the sound that comes out, the clarity and huge sound stage. I would say that for optimal results, using a sub is a must. These speakers take very little power to generate loud audio.
Just ordered this item, will post again when I use it on my old 45's and man I got them from my aunt, and they been in my basement for years!!! The are very diry!!!.
Nice.... Even from my mobile phone it sound goods..
I use a Spin Clean and I have never had an issue with any label getting wet. Initially it was a concern but has never happened. If people find their labels are getting wet it may be that they are putting too much distilled water in the unit. The Spin Clean also has much wider surface area on their brushes so there is more contact area on the album. I would assume this would assist greatly in better cleaning the album. The cleaning pads on the Spin Clean are very fine as well and I find they get deep into the grooves. I can’t speak on the thickness of the brush fibre on the VinylStyl as I have never seen them. I also find the wiping cloths to work just fine albeit they do get wet quite quickly. I have cleaned some old used albums that were quite dirty and not confident the Spin Clean could do the job (these ones I clean twice) and have had very good results. I am certainly not trying to undermine the VinylStyl but rather express my experience with the Spin Clean. I find the Spin Clean to be a very good, inexpensive product. But to each their own.
got to use bigger panels like 2x4 at least , with a crossover/eq and a sub attached ... suspended from the ceiling correctly and 2 exciters per panel and you got the worlds best homemade speakers
You should have used a nylon thread to hang the board to prevent or minimize the vibration transfer.
Has anyone thought about converting the spin clean, this unit, or a similar unit into a vacuum drying machine? I'm thinking to have a go at it; where their is a will there is a way.
