Very Good test - my analysis 2 outside = compressed , 2 inside =more open less muddy , i would also say left to right green = most mids, OCD least mids but..all have mids .. 1) Archer 2) Snouse 3) Screamer 4) OCD ( probably best as a single source of gain - hard clipper)
@@ubertwerpify hey thanks man 🤘🏼 That's exactly my personal rating in this scenario 👍🏼 As you say the OCD might be sick into a bit cleaner amp!
I love Jakes Charvel always have but at the price point these are...no locking tuners, and a brash non modern JB in the bridge , its the only reason I never bought one lol ....i know for a fact they are built perfectly though amazing guitar 🎸 congratulations
@@JamesFlorio-ti8gc hey man thanks for watching! It stays in tune very well! But locking tuners would be awesome especially for quick string changes. It's not my guitar unfortunately:) but the neck is to die for and shaped my ideas for future guitars
@joapguitar yes I've held that guitar in my hands and played a few times the quality and neck feel is definitely there....I do suggest if you haven't tried to get a Guthrie Govan MIJ and try it out. Very similar feel except the roasted maple neck is absolutely insane on the MIJ stuff
@JamesFlorio-ti8gc funny you should mention the Guthrie Govan because that's the next guitar I get for reviewing here on the channel 😁👍🏾

Cool vid! Always loved the look of Jake's original Blue Burst. Heard from him in his last interview that there might be a more affordable version of this coming from Charvel next year, along with his Badlands-era Purple Burst. I sure hope so! 😎
hey man thank's for watching! I bit more affordable would indeed be cool! It's around 3,5 k here in Germany. But the guitar is really well made I got a give that to the Charvel Custom Shop! Looking forward to the purple burst then 🤟
Just bought v2 for my SC20h. I love that it doesn't cut the low end. I use it for leads because it's nice and think with that sizzle & sustain. My Boss SD-1 cuts the bass way too much. It's thinner for leads than the OCD it's still great for leads but that OCD keep it nice and thick even in the high notes. I"ve had it for 2 weeks and it's a keep. I don't do Metal. It does NOT have a tight low end. But for open chords and leads it's great.
Hey man that is very interesting to hear, thanks! It's a very characteristic sound and when it comes down to pedals it's a very individual choice. I hope this video helped you ;)

This amp sounds amazing! I've never played a Smallbox, but I have the BE-100 Deluxe and I have heard that the "BE" channel on the Smallbox is voiced slightly more vintage than the BE Channel(s) on the Deluxe models. Would you say there is any truth to this?
Hey man, I haven't played the BE-100 so far! It is on my list though ;) I played the BE-50 DLX and felt that this one sounds a bit more modern than the Smallbox 50. I think it has a bit more gain and tightness. I usually get that extra gain and tightness from my pedals, but if I'd need the chug some extra low and heavy metal chords the BE-50 would be a better fit in my opinion.
@ yeah I had a BE50 and traded for the 100 cause I wanted the Plexi channel but I honestly think I like the tone of the Smallbox better
@The2ndProtectsTheRest interesting! Have you tried the PLEX as well?
@ no not yet, when I first found out it was being released I was super stoked and I wanted one, because I'm a huge Jimmy Page and Van Halen fan, but then I realized that I want a little more versatility, because even though I love the Plexi sound, that's really all you get out of it, which is fine and I don't use effects loops anyway. I'm a dirty player and like to slam everything into the front of the amp, I just like different tonal options by having a second or in some cases even a 3rd channel, so that started my journey towards either the Smallbox 50, the Wildwood edition Smallbox 50 or even the JEL 50. I'm heavily gravitating towards that circle of 3. Play everything from that late 60's early 70's classic rock tone all way into the late 80's metal style. I'm really not into modern metal at all. E flat tuning and occasional drop D is as low as I play.
@@The2ndProtectsTheRest I heard from 4 different people that the SB50 Wildwood Edition is a killer amp. Never tried one though ;) I also don't need the modern chug tone in a tube amp at the moment. The SB50 really covers a wide area of tone, I love it ;)
Great amp and strat, tuned a half step down, also called baroque tuning.
@@myuncle2 certainly some barockin tunes there 😎🤙

Why... it's Marshall in to Marshall, just dirt
@@Tommy712rus what do you mean? That the OCD is a marshall?
@joapguitar it's a marshall in a box pedal
You already have a good sound 🙂 But for overdrive, tube screamer or boss sd will be better
@Tommy712rus yeah I don't enjoy the OCD into the Marshall as well... But many people do
sorry guys the guitar went out of tune during the beginning and I tuned it at 3:27
I have both those amps. The Helios 50 can be taken down to 32 watts in the back. Idk why it’s not advertised that way. It takes pedals beautifully. The smallbox I had and moved up to the wildwood guitars spec’d with the extra gain. Perfect amp. We live in an apt. The master control is so good I don’t use anything but a pedal but it doesn’t really need anything tbh. Mine’s in off white. It’s the only amp that I have not had any need for repair yet. I don’t want to jinx myself and I’ve had it quite a while. I think it’s hand wired. It’s before Dave Friedman and the rest of a bunch of companies sold all of their products to boutique amp distribution. Started with the pink taco but actually the smallbox has a better master control.
Hey man, as you said: both of them are great amps. The Variac switch on the Helios doesn't do much for me I'm not sure if the Master needs to be quite cranked to get a more drastic effect. I found it to be very subtle. And yeah man the Smallbox is a beast with Killer Master volume and loads of usable gain. I love it

Sounds killer! Notice you have a rockcrusher - are you using it in the video to tame the level? I heard Friedman amps have great master controls. I use my rock crusher in conjunction with the PPIMV on my Ceriatone 36 watt RP to tame volume. Been very pleased this way.
Hey Benjamin thank you! Yes, I take the level down by 20 dB and get the master up to around 4 in the video. Without the rockcrusher that level would literally crush me in the room 😁 With the Friedman SB I also don't notice a big tone difference when the master is around 2... it's a very good master volume! I hear about the Ceriatone amps more often these but never heard or even saw one ;)
Excellent demonstration! Very pure tone 😊
Hey Yoshi thank you very much :)🤘
Had both at different points. Both great amps. In the end I just prefer a normal 1987x with a boost in the front.
back to the roots mate ;) I totally understand - there's just something special about an original Marshall Plexi! I sold the Bogner Helios today and will probably put a JCM800 or Plexi in the Studio as soon as I have the funds
@@joapguitar Nice Honestly depending on location, I'd just get a Ceriatone All Access Plexi and be done lol
@dannyk1790 I never saw that amp here in Germany. If I do I'll certainly try it out 👍🏾
@@joapguitar oh they're generally made to order. You can check them at their site. Just google "Ceriatone amps" and it should be the first hit
Great tone and playing! Both amps sound good. I love the BK Mules. That’s what I use.
Hey James, thank you for the kind words! Yeah man the pickups are awesome! I am just struggling a bit with the feedback they create at high volumes due to not being potted. How do you use the BK mules?
The Smallbox is a great amp. Have an older BE-100 and Friedman customer support is second to none and the build quality is top notch. Bogner amps are similar in build . it is up to you. If buying a Bogner would get an 101B.
I was also considering getting a BE-100 but I guess I never need the 100 W of power ;) Yeah the Friedman customer support is crazy good. The difference I would say is that the Bogner is built in much lower numbers and thus has more of an artsy, boutiquy, unique appearance.
One day I’ll own it one day!
treat yourself, buddy ;)
@@joapguitar so is it more of plexi or jcm 800
@jessetate9701 hey man I'd say it's a different animal... Basically it's a new thing that sounds darker and more muscular than a Marshall to me. More single note definition and sustain
@ that’s good! I’ve had my heart set on it for years! Either the combo or the head version
@jessetate9701 did you play one already?
Sounds very touch responsive. Very quiet and clean but hairy when hitting the strings.
hey Dom, it really gets very sparkly with those Marshally harmonics when you play lightly. I'll do a similar video with the Friedman Smallbox soon ;)
Killer!
Thank's mate :)
🎉🎉🎉 sounds Great 👍👍👍
thx buddeeyyy :)
came for the smallbox, left thinking i want the Bogner.
@@jake13b Kaptain Koerg logo? 😎🤟 Tell me what you love about the Bogner 😏
@@joapguitar i mean, they both sounds amazing. bogner just seemed super open and bloomed more full. i could hear that chimeyish growl that one would think of a hot rodded plexi to to sound like. esp in the 80s mode.
@jake13b thx for the feedback 👍🏾 are you from captain Koerg guitars?
Nice playing! I liked both amps. To me, the Friedman was better for the rhythm playing and the Bogner was better for the leads (seemed to really jump out of the mix). I have wanted both amps for a long time. I would probably prefer a 3-channel version of the Smallbox (Wildwood has a 3-channel version). Which felt better to play/under your fingers?
@@leftygtrplr6184 hey buddy thanks a lot 😎🤟 The bogner feels a bit thinner and harder to play under the fingers just like a marshall jcm800 or Plexi would do. I love the Smallbox for soloing... That appears to be exactly my sound! The bogner has killer tones in it too but it's not my comfort zone... But we are talking small differences here, both amps are killer 😃🔥
I have that one. It’s the best amp I have. I feel it’s less stiff too. The Helios I use with a pedal it feels better. Without it I’d go with the smallbox wildwood spec’d.
@@Utube-s8m yeah man I think you are the 4th person recommending the SB Wildwood edition! Must be one hell of an amp but it's hard to find here in Germany!
Both great. Maybe only the Friedman Plex and Suhr SL67 mkII can sound even better than these.
Yeah I tried these as well! Also great amps. For the Plex I'd go with a pedal to get my solo tones. I just played it at the Guitar Summit this year so I still need to do an in-depth test ;)

@@Stereostupid you are perfectly right 👍🏾
On a DI comparison you can fool us, yes, both will sound good but not that great. The real fun is when you play live a tube amp, with a good power attenuator, unless you play in a very big venue.
yeah mate the real fun starts in the room with the master at 4!
B is the amp A is fuzzy and unnatural hence it is digital
@@peterknicked you are correct, sir 😎🤟
Huge difference
when you know, you know ;)
A tube amp will always be the best sounding, digital is very practical and versatile but it does not compare in quality to the real thing! 🤘
yeah man you are right! So whats the real amp ;)
TBH both are underwhelming by 2203 standards. B sounds more open and I expect to be the amp. A sounds like Bees. Both are boxy.
hey mate you guessed right, B is the real amp! The only reason they could sound boxy would be my IR Loader... And the fact that there's absolutely no EQ or reverb or delay or compression on the audio files. Do you reckon other amp sims would win agains the 2203 in my video?
A=Amp
sank ju for your vote
B is the real amp :)
I did a shootout between my 1959HW/1960AHW/1960BHW full stack and my headrush pedalboard on a pair of Laney LFR-212 FRFRs. It needed some serious tweaking on the tone with various IR files and some boost to get the headrush to the same sound. Yes, the Laneys couldn't keep up with the punch of the real amp in a live scenario, but after recording both thru a SM57 and a E906 the sound was almost indistinguishable. Even if you heard some difference, nobody could tell which one was which.
That's interesting! Totally my experience as well... you have to fiddle around like a MF to get the Amp Sim Sound close to the real amp. The real amp is still more dynamic if you listen closely but for some heavy rhythm strumming I doubt you could really hear it in a mix. Some lighter picking and playing with the volume knob mostly reveals the amp simulation. Cheers man!
THE TONES START RIGHT HERE: 00:43
Comparing the Friedman Smallbox and the Bogner Helios, which would you choose as #1?
@@leftygtrplr6184 hey lefty! I'd use the Smallbox 50 for any lead guitar stuff. And heavy rock rhythm guitar. The bogner I'd use for more classic rock rhythm when it's supposed to sound more like a traditional Marshall
This is the purest "fundamental amp" of all the Friedman Amps in my opinion. You made a good choice. The louder the better too. I like my master on 3 or 4 and the gain around 7 or 8. I wish the bright switch worked on the BE channel is my only gripe, but I get it. But if you're using the plexi channel and pedals the bright switch really helps the tone. I've had mine for about 8 or 9 years now and it's still here! I have a cool red marshall 1960a with a set of g12C greenbacks (the jimi hendrix ones) in it and it's awesome with this amp. I really like greenbacks with this. They make the amp sound so much more full. Enjoy it! You can't take it with you!
Hey Johnny thank's for sharing your perspective. Sounds like a sick setup you have! I need to use the power soak when I am here in my home studio... but I love turning it up! Cheers man enjoy your amp as well! 😎🤘
@@joapguitar It's really nice with a simple cheap tc flashback mini with the 2290 tone print and a strymon big sky reverb. Then the amp really comes alive. Sometimes hearing the amp dry doesnt tell you everything you need to know. It sounds really good with anything time based in the loop. But I like to just keep it simple.
@@johnnyb3987 hey Johnny I have to admit that I haven't gigged the amp so far and have not used the FX Loop! Just recorded dry amp sound 😁 But I actually took the SB50 because I wanted to have the FX Loop for concerts. Thanks for the reminder!
