Must Read Books For The UK Election - Do Not Let My Past Be Your Future - Harry Leslie Smith
Thank you so much for the introduction and good impression of the book.
You’re most welcome! This is a pretty old video so I don’t think the quality of my analysis or presenting is as good as it is now, which is a shame, but I hope it inspires you to read the book!
📚This is a different white T-shirt
Too right it is!

Lolll thanks
the haircut is great 👍 you look super nice. if you're in the mood for more russian classics, i'd like to recommend "oblomov" by ivan goncharov
Thank you! I’ll add it to my tbr
Bro this meme is cursed hahaha I screamed as a bisexual
Hahah not gonna lie, this video idea came to be because I thought of this meme for a thumbnail
@BrownBooktuber i mean it got my attention and now I have to read the copy of Brothers Karamazov!
I enjoyed ‘Crime & Punishment’, I was a bit confused by the random French.
I remember looking into it, I'm pretty sure it's a slight haha. The more french the character uses the more corrupt they are
I love banana bread (actually) with chocolate chips (not so much) 😂. I felt the same going into This is How You Lose the Time War. Thought it was going to be one of those over hyped books that would fall flat for me. So I got it through my library. Now I want to buy it so I can have in my collection and reread.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought this haha
I couldn't make it through Crime and Punishment 😂 one day ill try again! I loved White Nights though its the first time i made a whole video on a novella 😂
I'll hop over to check that video out!
I was intrigued with the idea of a the book about a Vietnamese agent conflicted about his role in the conflict. The fact that it won the Pulitzer made me even more interested in reading it. Fortunately, fate favored me I found it on the shelves of my local library a few days ago. I have started reading it. I am not far into it yet. It is pretty dense and cannot be dashed through. I find I really need to concentrate because there is a lot to appreciate and savor over. I can already see why it would be chosen for the Pulitzer.
I’m glad you’re getting into it!
Comment for the algorithm
Thank you 🫡
Congratulations Han Kang!!
I’m gonna have to drop another Han Kang video to celebrate 🍾
Thanks will buy it
Woo!
I am currently reading this book. Totally agree with the layout. He also uses a lot of imagery. Contrasting destruction with various things. A lot of repetition of certain sounds making reading rhythmic. And personification. The length of the stanzas also seems intentional with some reading like newspaper reports and some so short and sporadic.
I very much appreciate your far better analysis than I could have given!

I only read 5 books in September, I had one book I loved, the others were just ok
That’s okay! I think we get caught up in only wanting to consume the best media, but sometimes you need to read/watch stuff that’s just ok to appreciate the really great stuff
@@BrownBooktuber I agree, also still you learn things even if you didn’t love what you read.
I had no idea about this! Thanks for making a video about it and spreading the word
You’re most welcome!
I can't wait until the Maya Angelou video. My cousin and I read her together. I really enjoyed it. Also going in blind and reading a book just because it's there is one of my favorite things about spending a day in the library.
I’ll try to do it justice 🫡 That’s so true! I wish my current library was walking distance :(
First time I've heard of them, so thank you so much for bringing it to my attention.
No worries! Hope you can pick something up 😊
I appreciate your channel, it’s nice to see a brown person bringing awareness to things while sharing the love of reading 😊
I wanna be THE brown guy on booktube 😊 and if I have a platform I gotta use it for good
@@BrownBooktuber as a fellow brown person it’s just nice, I feel like we are silenced a lot/ or dismissed. And so far you are THE ONLY ONE lol
@@BrownBooktuberalso unrelated do u have a discord server, it would be fun to talk about books verbally
Unfortunately I’m a bit of an old man when it comes to these sort of things 😂 I’ve no idea how to do it, especially ensuring it’s safe. But if it’s something that’s wanted I’ll learn haha
@@BrownBooktuber it would just be fun to talk with you and others
Just placed an order! I ordered In search of Fatima by Ghada Karmi and Mural by Mahmoud Darwish. Thanks for spreading awareness about this!
Amazing!
I almost cried when it described the death of the cat from his childhood. There was a black cat I was close to who died over a year ago too, so the cat being black (albeit with some white) hits extra hard for me. Loved it, but I sometimes wished there was a happier ending. I guess it just comes with the fact that it's from Japan, endings are either depressing or bittersweet
I hope you're doing okay <3
Interestingly, I have basically the same opinion on The Tombs of Atuan and Tehanu as @MsA277. It's my favourite Earthsea book, I read and reread it over and over again when I was younger. It's quite different from the others - a bit spooky, fittingly for October. Imho books 1, 3, and to a lesser extent 5 feel similar, book 2 is good weird, book 4 (Tehanu) is meh weird (but maybe I just read it at a too young of an age and it would hit different now). There's also a short story collection (The Tales from Earthsea), which I recall quite enjoying. The Dragonology book was great, I still have it hidden away on my shelf somewhere! White Mughals sounds interesting, I might give it a shot. I've read the Anarchy by the same author, and I wouldn't say that I *enjoyed* it, but it was very good. On a similar note, this month I'm slowly making my way through Spare No One: Mass Violence in Roman Warfare by Gabriel Baker. If you've ever wondered how it felt to get conquered by the Romans, this book has the answer - and it's "pretty bad, actually. And by 'pretty bad' I mean 'horrendously awful, and it's procedurally mandated'". Fun.
Love the insight into the Earthsea books! Now I know it’s kinda spooky I’m glad I scheduled it for October 😂 and that romans book actually sounds super interesting!
I don’t know what I want to read so I’m picking books at random

@@BrownBooktuberI started reading Euripides, don’t know what I’m moving onto next
@@nursemain3174 love the update!
The Tombs of Atuan is one of my favorite books! It’s quite dark but I love the character arc and ending. Did not love the follow-up book, Tehanu, which does have dragons but is completely different in tone, characterization, and feels like it doesn’t know what it’s trying to say
Oh really? I’ll have Tehanu on my November list then to see what’s up!
You know what, I've had the first on my tbr for ages, this is a sign
Doooooo iiiiittttttt
How smug. You could have just started your video by saying: 'I hate jews and refuse to listen to anyone who defends them.' 'Zionists' don't comment on your videos to infuriate you. You probably just get infuriated reading pro-Israel comments because the facts and history are not on your side, and you hate that the Jews have not been eradicated from their homeland. Free Palestine...from Hamas!!!

This list is shite
I’m glad you think so 😊

Omg. Seriously dude, met girl whwo loved this series, planned to buy her missing books but she kicked me off so i guess i may as well watch it and see if you are right 😅
lol if/when you read the books let me know!
Sooooo I know the Murtagh book is out 😅 when researching I accidentally clicked on the audiobook option which is why I said October. But my point at the end stands, I’ll be reading the book because the other books were good enough to convince me to!
great video!
Thank you! When I’m a little more confident filming in public I’d love to remake this with b-roll haha
Thanks so much for showcases these books, it's more than fine if you mentioned them before! Have a great day!
You’re welcome! Thank you for your kind words 😊

I so admire your commitment to the Palestinians, and more generally to the rights of all human beings to live with dignity and freedom. It's not the easiest fight, but we owe it to humanity.

Interesting picks! Hope you enjoy reading them. I'm hoping to get through The White Tiger, Goat Days, and The Battle For Your Brain. Inshallah Wish me good luck!
Thank you! Best of luck 😊 The White Tiger is a very interesting read & analysis of capitalism!
pov : you just finished the book and u are watching other people's feelings about it
Welcome!
This is so cool. Thank you for making the video 😊. And hadn't heard of the Djinn Patrol, definitely adding to the TBR, ta muchly. Keep putting that Arundhati Roy off cos of that heaviness 🙈. Have been eyeing her nonfic as well. Have you read? Would you rec?
Please do! I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’ve only read 2 of Roy’s non-fiction books. Azadi, which I highly recommend & her book with John Cusack which is also pretty good but I see more as a place to start to go off and read about the things they discuss in it
I just saw it in a book store in Norway and that's why I'm here googling what's its about
Amazing! I hope this convinces you to pick it up 😊
I personally am not a fan of such books - it has a rather western flavour to it, which isn't what I look out for when wanting to read outside the western canon. Such books, like immigrant fiction, tend to follow the western narrative arc and, to me, it feels much less authentic that way tone-wise.
I understand that perspective. I think I see it as different to writings from other countries, like I don’t apply this to Roy because she wrote in India about India, but books by the diaspora I’d say are a different genre. Yes there’s the western perspective on what they talk about but I think also that is something those of us in the diaspora can recognise for good or bad. But I get it not being everyone’s cup of tea
Currently reading this 🥰
Let’s go!!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts 😊
Gonna be holding you to that second-hand bookshop idea now! I wanna see it happen! 😄
Haha the goal is end of 2025!
Loved this video, the recommendations were so varied and I feel like I’m just going to get smarter reading them. I’ll be checking out Malcolm X Speaks. I love the Blackpink top also!
Amazing! I hope theres at least a couple you pick up :) and thank you! I got it when I went to their tour in 2022
I absolutely love Hiromi Kawakami, and can't understand how she's not more widely known! Just reading The Third Love now, which lead to me finding this video 🙂 I also work in a public library and recommend her books as much as possible!
Ikr! Oooo how is it?? I’m holding off on reading it until Autumn because I enjoy reading a lot more in the colder months 😂 Oooooo I hope lots more people sign up for the library! And take your recommendation.
@@BrownBooktuber it's more on the fantastical side, and I prefer her more down to earth books to be honest, but it's different and worth a read
Thanks ❤
You’re welcome :)
I know how prevalent covert racism is in this country because I meet the covert racists all the time. The cruelty of nature has left me looking like the stereotype of the tail end of a Britain First march. I've lost count of the times I've been waiting for a bus or a train when some random stranger has tried to strike up a conversation with the same opening line of " I'm not being funny mate but" followed by a tirade about a minority group. I worry about how I appear to other people particularly people from minority communities, do I make them uncomfortable, do I scare them. I saw the rise of the far right in the 70's, I fought them in the 80's and thought we'd have gown out of all that stupidity, I'm so disappointed because I really thought things would have been better by now.
I think sadly the racism didn’t go away. Just the faces of it got what they wanted out of it
