A demo of Ibanez PNB14E acoustic bass. Both a microphone (Rode NT1A) and pickup (starts at 1:29) sound were recorded. Played by a guitarist so please excuse my sloppy technique.
LR Baggs Session VTC pickup strumming audio demo
Просмотров 9 тыс.6 лет назад
Audio demo of a LR Baggs Session VTC pickup installed in my Sigma DR-28 guitar, recorded straight into an audio interface with a camera mic switched off. There is no additional processing in the audio, no EQ, reverb etc. The saturation control on the pickup is set at about 1/3 and the tone control is turned completely down (rolled towards the bridge). The same recording but with some EQ and rev...
Hi Piotr -- I have a K&K Pure Mini in my Hummingbird guitar at present, and when my palm comes down on the strings, keeping the rhythm, I'm getting a distorted thump/click sound which I can't get rid of. Just wondering if you could comment on whether or not the Lyric (which sounds very good in your video) is less prone to this kind of percussive overload?
Sounds electronic especially when strumming with a flatpick. Underwhelming like a cheap, badly positioned mic.
Bought one after seeing this video. Thanks.
I have the Schatten in my Yamaha FS5 and with a little bass boost it sounds great. I used to have a K&K Pure mini in an Alvarez AD66 and it sounded fine if I cut the mids. In this video the Lyric sounds awesome but will probably be very prone to feedback.
LR Baggs Lyric by far the most natural.
Wow❤
The Schattens have a boomy boxiness in the low end that I hate. On that first section the bass notes are truncated sonically. And a sort of one-dimensional sound field. Honkey mid-range. Not my cup of tea. Always searching for that perfect sound on acoustic but I think I'll be sticking with the K&K that I have on all my guitars, highly EQ'able too. The test is not how it sounds into an audio interface but through a PA...
Thanks...its the Schatten
thats the best bass under 5000 dollars you can buy
Im probably going to try the Schatten HFN out soon . They all sound passable . I think i liked the taped in Schatten hfn the best .
Similar to the K&K pure mini idea, just different design. Sounds very similar. Anyone compared these to the K&K?
I have one of these, been playing for about 3 months, and it is so much easier to play than my Fender CB-60....and on top of that it is MUCH louder. I can get 90db if I pluck near the bridge without any problem. These are brilliant little basses; they don't have the tone of the full size but they more than make up for it with sheer playability.
This sounds like a perfect match between pickup and gitar.
Great Video, thanks a bunch. I got this bass 3 days ago. I love it. I am using it with a 10 Watt Ampeg Bass amplifier; the pick-up is hot and clear. I also use a solid-state Watt Fender Bass Amplifier with 3 tone-shaping features. I am looking to see if there are short gauge tape wound strings that would sound good. I only use it through an amplifier.
Is it installed with stick or putty?
Sound is distorted in all examples. K&K sounds mellower but it’s hard to judge without band or singing voice context.
Very good comparison. Overall I'd say the K&K sounds best, though the clarity in the high-end of the Schatten (tape) is really nice. I suppose either could be ideal with the right preamp and high-pass/low-pass filters.
Thanks for the putty/tape comparison, it does make a big difference! I personnaly prefer the putty but I guess it depends on the guitar itself.
Interesting comparison, and greatly appreciated. To my ears the K & K is much more appealing for fingerpicking, richer and warmer. For the strummed demo the Schatten may have the edge, although not by much. I'm primarily a fingerpicker so for me the K & K is my choice.
Are you sure it's perfectly tuned and intonated? It kinda sounds out of tune to my ears
i know a goood ear doc
To me the tape guy sounds relly wekest of them all, don't understand how everybody favors it? I am listening with studio monitors and to me k&k is the most natural of the bunch

Well done bredren Nice presentation 👍🏾 Thanks for sharing
Awesome presentation bredren 👍🏾 Picked up the Ibanez Looking forward to enjoying it Thanks for sharing
Sounds good...
Great video well done
Thanks for this demo. I’m sold on this pickup!
I know this video is a bit old now but I just put a transducer pickup like the k&k on my Alvarez. It sounds great. But I see the appeal of the HFN. I almost like the HFN better for picking and the k&k better for strumming. Good review of them both.
That’s the most natural sounding pickup I’ve heard. Sounds better than internal mic.
Was the K&K glued on or did you use the supplied tape? It sounds dull here compared to my K&K equipped guitars.
It sounds really good!
Lyric. Agree with the piezo quack comment regarding K&K
Lyric.
can't go wrong with either one!
Baggs Lyric sounds best!
My K&K pure mini does not sound like that. It does not quack. What preamp are you using with it or what amp? This info is important. The K&K prefers a 1 Meg input impedance, while a Fishman Loudbox amp has 10 meg, and other preamps have less than 1 meg. While I can’t speak to the other pickups you’re testing, I can say the K&K (no affiliation) sounds way better than the sound you’re getting when the impedance is properly matched.
Hi, I totally agree. The HFN with tape sounds amazing!... Did you do the install yourself, Is it simply a matter of taping under bridge? What kind of tape did you use/works best? TY for this video as I have been looking for a pickup like this for a long time but others leave much to be desired. Is there a video on the install or is it really as easy as imply taping it inside...Any tips? Thanks!
Double side Adhesive tape and the putty comes with the schatten hfn passive n active pickup I used the tape on the first installation n pickup came loose n fell off n I had bridge plate really clean then i used putty n its very stable n sound fixture n sounds incredible n its placement is critical in getting best tone from your guitar
Terrific demo, this really illustrates the sonic differences. Schatten + tape install really seems like a strong winner here!
LYRIC wins!
That comparison pretty much explains why the Lyric costs more.
Nie chcesz czasem sprzedać tego basu?
It's not very loud but it sure does reproduce the natural tone of your guitar exelent pickup
Yes anyone reading my review I found the putty by far the best the tape didn't really stick pickup at all so the putty done the trick small amount under each foot with just a film of putty to make solid n true contact
Is just me or I listen a quacky sound from the pickup.. And in some k&k are the same quacky sound.. Is it a bad installation?
Steel string?
Man, this is one of the best videos I've seen of someone playing an acoustic bass. This is what these basses are built for.
In a band and with loud sound, the transducer microphones (kk) suffer feedback? can feedback be controlled in those situations?
HFN has a little too much bass. With a preamp, the bass turned down, it will be perfect. I think this shows that if you have an excellent guitar, either will sound pretty good. Just don't use one of those Matrix Infinity saddle piezo garbage. Totally makes you regret it because your guitar will never sound good again until you remove it. Anybody want to purchase mine? ~sarcasm (I wouldn't do that to a fellow guitarist) Hopefully I can do something with it.
All sound good. I think you could throw out the HFN tape installed version. Although it's good, compared to the K&K and HFN puddy installed version, it just doesn't quite measure up to either one. I think the other two are very close and I wouldn't mind having either one in a guitar of mine. However, if I had to make a choice from this demo, I'd go with the K&K.
I think, overall, I like the Schatten taped. It sounds more like a micked acoustic guitar. I currently use a K&K in a Martin and I like it, but this demo is turning my head (ear?).
Hi, is this base loud enough acoustically to play together with an acoustic guitar in an informal setting (pub/campfire)? It is a crucial question for me:), thanks in advance...:)
Not really, only if the acoustic guitar plays relatively quietly. It is not as loud as the guitar by any measure but they can still play together and the bass contributes to the sound even if it doesn't carry through perfectly balanced acoustically.
