Lean 5S Sustain
This is video #6 out of 6 in this series about Lean 5S. This is a great series to use as part of your kaizen event training.
The lean 5S system contains 5-steps to achieving a more organized, controlled and efficient manufacturing plant. These steps are Sort, Set-in-Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. And in this video, I discuss the fifth and what I think is the easiest step in the 5S process, and that is the Sustain step.
Why do 5S efforts slip away in some plants and succeed in other plants? Well, when you understand the true nature of the fifth S, Sustain, then you will easily succeed with long-lasting results. Here are the simple principles to help you sustain your 5S efforts.

This is video #2 out of 6 in this series about Lean 5S. This is a great series to use as part of your kaizen event training. The Lean Sort step is just like it sounds. The team needs to Sort-out all the unneeded items that are cluttering the work area. We need to understand that this 5S process is totally different from a typical factory clean-up. With 5S we use a process, we dig deeper and we ...

Investigating Process Variation
Просмотров 116Год назад
Process variation can run rampant in a factory but a controlled process yields fewer defects and reduces product costs. So how do we find the root cause of process variation? Well you can find some good clues by studying process data and investigating the 6M’s of Manufacturing. Check out all of our online training courses at www.tools4t.com/
Long-Term Process Capability
Просмотров 104Год назад
A capability study is a six-sigma tool that statistically compares real-life process variation to product specifications. Long-term process capability is measured by Pp and Ppk. As the name indicates, long-term studies include process performance data that is collected over a long period of time, such as a month for example. It’s common to collect hundreds or even thousands of data points for u...
Short-Term Process Capability Studies

A short-term process capability study is a six-sigma tool and the are done to establish the performance entitlement of a manufacturing process. This type of capability study measures a process under ideal conditions. The value of establishing this process ideal is that it can be compared with the actual long-term performance of a process and hence be used to identify process improvement opportu...

In manufacturing, data lurks in every corner of a factory. Converting so much process data into a usable format can definitely be a challenge. Sometimes, simplifying things is the way to go. Statistical Mean is a measure of central tendency and it is a corner stone tool of six-sigma methodology and manufacturing process management. See how mean can support your process objectives! The Magic of Normal Distribution

The Normal Distribution Curve is magical in that it can transform small sets of sample data into predictive statistics about entire populations. It doesn't matter if you are studying a manufacturing process, a group of people or something in the natural world, the Normal Distribution Curve is equally powerful. The Normal Distribution Curve and the Empirical Rule are cornerstone principles withi...

Could you please tell me what a kaizen team is? Thank you!
Hi, A kaizen team is a small group of people who spend a few concentrated days blitzing a problem/project. So if you have a messy area or a broken process, a team of cross-functional people would work full days for 3-5 days doing nothing but fixing the issues. The goal is to brain storm and then dig-in deep with corrective actions. Make sense?
@@Tools4T I fully get it! Thank you so much. Just started working in a place that uses that so much so your videos have been so helpful
thanks for this detailed video!!
Glad it was helpful!
😅
Hi Joe, thank you very much for these videos, very useful. I was introduced to Lean a few years ago via 2S Lean from Paul Akers. I have to say I feel like 3S Sweep Sort Standardize is easier to understand, explain and get excited about. This might just be semantics and one could argue the missing two steps are contained in the 3S, but would be interested in your opinion and if you feel strongly about the full 5 steps versus 3S? Thanks again!
Hi, Thanks for your comment. Interesting point you make. 5S gets a little confusing when it comes to distinguishing the difference between Standardize and Sustain. I think as long as the method Sorts out the unneeded items, eliminates dirt and grime and what remains is controlled visually - its a good system. I think the main challenges beyond that are 1) Dealing with the items that were sorted out. Can't keep moving the mess around. Consultants never address the issue of dealing with sorted-out items. 2) There's no such this as sustaining. You either improve or regress. So there needs to be a plan for continuous improvement. Without it, regression occurs. I think 2S, 3S or 5S during a Kaizen event itself - its probably semantics.
@@Tools4T that makes sense thanks!
