I listened to every Lenny Dee song I could get my hands on, over and over. Seeing him in this video was really a big thrill. I'm sorry to say that I had never heard of Dennis Awe until finding this video, but I'm glad I know who he is now. Thank you Dennis for posting this cool video. I'm not an organ player, but seeing Dennis's excitement at the end of this song gives me the idea that he's just a big a fan of Lenny Dee as I am.
+John Brown Dennis is still the consumate entertainer, He has been to Our music store in St. Paul somewhat regularly. Most recently just before the holiday's, He was here along with Brad Bryan another Lowrey artist and designer of the EZ series Lowrey's They were doing workshops for the Journey and the Inspire models. WOW ! that was intense. and circusgirl1950. He is still a real charactor, and a great teacher, He has forgotten more music than most of Us will ever learn. I know that Brad is coming back on the 26th of this month not sure what He has planned for this workshop yet, but it will be good. kevlutu
Surprised to hear Lennys Model A had been sold. Likewise it should have been in a music museum... By the way he was booked to play in the UK just a few years before he passed on, sadly although I had tickets he had to cancel due to ill health a great loss to easy listening organ music and what a talent.
Sure the mix of Dennis's organ got a little louder at times, but listen to what he is comping- a nice full orchestra accompaniment. It's tastefully backing Lenny and so as long as you are listening to the music itself as opposed to the volume level it all works well together. Of course nothing beats a real electromagnetic Hammond organ. In fact the current digital clones like the SK1 and the New B3 lack that magnetic element in their emulations of the real Hammond tone wheel organs. I know there is a better way to duplicate the Hammond tone, but honestly by the time you get it down there will still be the need for a Hammond and Leslie tube amp and Jensen speakers. Still, for the portability of it all the clones do okay, but in a way I see it as a cop out. I mean how much bigger is a Hammond and a Leslie than a Marshall Stack or a drum kit? Come on guys, organ dollies and ramps are not a big deal. It presents the organ as the organ should be presented! Kids today know the Hammond as a 'plugin' on their computer more than the true beast it really is. It's the real components in action that keep the Hammond, Wurlitzer, Conn, Gulbransen, Allen( pre 71' of course), Rodgers, Yamaha, Baldwin,Thomas, Kimball, and a few others in that REAL ANALOG INSTRUMENT league because they were all analog discrete component organs at least until 1971, then Allen showed up with digital and others began the 'chip' phase. Only master oscillator organs with IC's that had lots of good filtering sounded good, in fact great in many cases, but for the most part these 70's models were wimpy and fake in comparison to the early models with either independent oscillators, or 12 oscillators divided. The Wurlitzer electrostatic reed and Conn individual vacuum tube oscillators are very professional and warm sounding just like the Hammond, but with a different job to perform. The Wurli ES reed is great for classical ( much warmer flute than Hammond), and the Conn indv. tube osc. organs have the best overall orchestral full voices for classical or theater, but they are now slouch for popular music ( popular 'standards' by now) either.
Used to enjoy watching and hearing Dennis at the Oregon state fair each year. He played the Technic organs for Margaret Woods. What a character he is!! Love it!! Thanks for putting this up on You Tube!
When he used the background recordings while playing the Technic's organ it was a tad bit more Lenny Dee-ish but it still had that Technic's organ sound....not the good old Hammond white model A with that delay echo and Hammond Solovox and a couple of big ole Leslies ! Nothing will come even near to the sound of the super customized white Hammond A / AV !
Dennis was a little over powering Lenny's playing ! Too bad they didn't have Lenny on a Hammond....it just isn't Lenny Dee if he is not playing a Hammond with delay echo going through a couple of Leslies ! He had his B-3000 Hammond customized and it had the delay echo running through it also !
that is something to treasure forever, I was in Florida in 93 but had to cut the trip short due to illness so I never got to see him, something I'm never forgiving my self for, that would have been a once in a lifetime experience.where could I purchase those dvd's? Thanks, John, CT
I have that complete Dennis Awe and Lenny Dee video on DVD ! And ALL the Live performances of Lenny at the White Hammond A ...and at the B-3000 ....Mr. Entertainer 1 and Mr. Entertainer 2 on DVD ! I met Lenny Dee and spent 3 nights at his Daulfin Den night club back in 1976 and have a picture of him and I in front of his white model A ! Flying Fingers Mark in Galena, Il
I read where Lenny had sold his Hammond A...that's sacralidge! It should be in a museum. An electronic organ museum. If I hit the lottery that's exactly what I'd do, I'd make an electronic organ museum right here in Columbus Ohio. No, we never made electronic organs here, but Columbus is where I live and it's central to Ohio, the State with the best selection of used electronic organs for the best prices. Look at Craigslist! Actually I think Durthaler's has a museum here in Columbus already...
