ASMR 90's Specialized Hard Rock MTB gets a rebuild
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
1993 Specialized Hard Rock gets a full rebuild. This bike has been kept indoors and seldom ridden virtually all of its life. In the video, it gets a full tear down and rebuild. There is something so special about these older bikes and it's great that this one is now ready for more action!

Kona Dew Plus - from beater to stock glory!
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.2 года назад
So I bought a thrown together Kona Dew Plus. Nice frame, but it wasn't working properly and needed some love. Since the seller included the stock rigid forks and brakes, I decided to put it back to stock, and make it work right!

Building my Kona Dew beater bike
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.2 года назад
In this video, I build up an old Kona Dew frame. I wanted this bike to be my personal beater bike. I mostly used older parts that were kicking around my shop. There are a few new parts, but not many! I like it cheap!
A Kona Dew is a beater bike? I know it's not top of the line but it's one hell of a nice bike. If I didn't have two bikes that I enjoy riding already it would be one I wouldn't mind to replace one of mine. My stuff is just cheap Chinese bikes but it does the trick.
Sweet girl!
Nice job! I
Thank You for showing how to bleed it out of slave cylinder! Very helpful
this 56CM is awsome ;)
Thanks!!!
@@makinitwork416 but I give up the idee to buy for me, this brand is more designed for small and medium cyclists in my opinion 🙂 I'm too tall and the upper sizes's geometries become weird and ugly . I LL go for a "soma jawbone", a mix of gravel/travel bike 😍
I have a 2005 and what I did because I'm 6 foot tall was take out the seat and lay down a blanket and laid comfortably on my back and just removed the hydraulic line and the two bolts that hold the cylinder in place the seat is only 4 bolts and a connector the whole job probably took less than an hour
whoa! That's an awesome idea! I never thought about taking the seat out!
how can you tell how old a kona dew bike is ? mine does not have disc brakes.
You could try the Kona Archives. If you google it, you'll see a link from Kona. You could also just google Kona dew with cantilevers and see if you see any similar images. Those may help identify the year. My guess is early 2000's or older. It'll probably last another 30 years with a good rebuild :)
@@makinitwork416 thank you, it is actually in pretty good shape. has one broke spoke on back tire. it has a 7005s aluminum frame.
no need to take out the clutch pedal assembly, the master cyl will slide out alone
Yes it can, but it's awkward. I opted to remove the whole unit.
Hi nice review. I have this bike. For me it's a bike for going anywhere. I have been bikepacking a few times and it's fantastic. It's slow on the ups and fast on the downs. Great bike.
hey cool! How did you find the sizing?
@makinitwork416 good, I'm 5'11 so I got the 52 size and it's fantastic
I bought a Surly DT when I went homeless, along with ortlieb panniers, and it saved my life. November Sierra.
Wow, that's a perfect testament to these bikes! Total life savers!
Interesting choice with the 105s. I pick up my new SDT today and am considering upgrading to 105 once I've put some miles on it. Thanks!
Beautiful! I do love the 105's. Crisp and precise!! Enjoy the new bike mate!
People seem to love that model of bike. It seems to be a choice of those who travel the world by bicycle. The "Swiss Army Knife" of bicycles.
Agreed! It's a great choice! Strong, durable, timeless, blue... what's not to like :)
I’m dealing with a stuck part too. I’m about to follow your procedure.
Gotta love those stuck parts! Good luck with your repair!
Same here! Don't have a steering wheel puller. Gonna have to try heat and more hammering!
Which Surly do you have?
Surly Disc Trucker - video coming shortly :)
You ever hear of the term , if it ain't broke don't fix it?
the bike was in one piece, but not functional. Wouldn't shift, and the brakes were sticky. :)
That bike was in perfect shape, why rebuild it?
It looked ok, but the shifters and brakes didn't work. It needed some love :)
Lemme buy it!
Great video. Wish you had shown where that third bolt/bracket was once the assembly was on the bench.
crap, sorry @michaelgreene ! The bolt stayed attached to the truck. I just loosened the bolt and the assembly slides out.
@@makinitwork416 I found it. After finding it and looking at your video again you did show it at then 6:50 mark. Once the fuse box is dropped it is easily seen and can be loosened with a wrench. I just loosened the bolt a little and it came out with the pedal assembly as there is a groove in the bracket. Originally I tried to just remove the master cylinder. Bad idea. I got it out but was unable to get the supply hose on the new one so I ended up pulling the whole assembly out. Your video helped. Thanks.
What year is yours? On mine (2008) the clutch and brakes share a reservoir.
Ah yes, I think it changed in 2010. Mine is a 2010 :)
Mine also shares the brake reservoir
thank you bro, thank you.
Beautiful bike . Love the colour!
Thanks @BikeShedBoy !
You need add a real truck
i hope you still reply. i have kona dew plus 2011. what bb should i use?
Oh cool! 2011's are sweet! I'm not sure what size would work on it, and it would depend on which cranks you're using. You can always bring it to a bike shop and they can measure for you. Good luck with the build!
@@makinitwork416thank for the response, Im planning to set it up 1by like yours. can the stock hubs accomodate 9 speed?
@@makinitwork416i lovee my kona, its stock wheelset with 36 holes, it handles any potholes in toronto, until now my wheels are still true.
@@miffachan123 Yes, your hubs should be able to accommodate 8, 9, 10 speed. There is a little spacer behind the cassette. You MAY need to remove that spacer if you are converting to 9 speed. You'll definitely need to remove it if you're going to 10 speed :)
Great jib on that fella, ive got a 1988 rockhopper that was fully restored not long ago, i was going to just keep it as a garage queen but i just love the way it rides so i do actually take it out fairly often 👍👌
Hey thanks so much! These older bikes are certainly something special, and glad to hear you are riding yours too! They ride totally different than modern bikes! Happy trails pal!
Anybody know what this bike in all original perfect condition is worth?
Hard to say, and I think it would depend on the buyer. I've seen them go for anywhere between $200 and $400...but again, it would depend on the buyer, and the condition of the bike :)
awww ahaha she’s so wet
aww what a cutie, this is actually adorable 🤍
Can we have videos of Billie ❤
Show dog
How's the puppy?
I found your channel because I saw your dog being groomed and I was hoping to see more of the dog on here. But I stayed for the bikes so I'm glad I found this. Maybe the channel will help us find the right bikes for our family.
You did a wonderful job ! Two points of critique: When removing the wheel bearings it is better to remove that metal dustcap thingy first. Cleaning will ne much more easy and thorough that way. Second : that see through plastic protector behind the casette could have done with a proper cleanup, or otherwise, could have been completely removed. Cheers !
since it is a non electric bike you will have a hard time carrying heavy items, i would suggest you get a bafang 750 watt mid drive conversion kit with a 20ah battery, i own one of these bikes in a ebike form and i would not even think of riding it without peddle assist.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m going to try a electric version soon. So far, I’ve found this to work fine for my commute, which is only around 7km with around 70lbs luggage.
I have the same year Specialized Hard Rock bike in 20 inch frame and black
Same bike also, got it at a yard sale, all original great condition. How do you know what size the frame is? Is it top of seat tube to middle of bottom bracket?
@@skolvikings5263 mine is a 20 inch frame 1 inch head tube. that one looks to be at least 16/18 inch with the same head tubes used for the shorter frames hence the short as an old barracuda eh?
@@skolvikings5263 I made no claims of the frame in the video/post
@@thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind I meant, how do I measure my frame to find out what size it is? From the top of the seat post tube to the middle of the bottom bracket is about 21 and a half inches. It's either a 21 or 22
@@skolvikings5263 on that frame you measure from middle of the top tube where it meets the seat tube to the middle of the crank.
That’s a HardRock not a Rockhopper. Clearly says so on the frame.
Doh! Thanks JP!
A couple of months ago I miss out on buying this same bike color and all. Enjoy great bikes never get old 😀
Thanks Ryan!
I was in the middle of rebuilding the same bike when my youngest daughter said she like the color way so I built it up for her insted
She's a lucky girl!
Very awesome! What do you think, about grevel upgrade old mtb like that? Can I shove the 28 wheels in frame (track 800) without frame cutting?
Hard to know for sure. If you shove larger wheels in the frame, you might not be able to use V-brakes. Disc brakes would be your best option. I think Trek 800 frames were all V-brake (cantilever) brake, so that frame might not be the best option for larger wheels. I love the idea of doing a gravel build though!
WELL DONE the bike deserved the pampering did you replace the steering and axle bearings and if yes , did you upgrade them for something like NSK OR NTN bearings. That pedal crank certainly looked like it had seen plenty of moisture as im sure mine will as im about to do a similar 1st ever renovation of my 2006 Giant MTB REALLY like that grease gun where did that come from and what grease was you using , very handy little thing WHERE did you get the crank removal tools as i will need similar i guess. How did you set up the gearing after chopping the cables , are you experienced with this type of work or just youtube with trial and error . the bike came out refreshed so will you be doing more like this👍👍🚲
You can get a starter tookit on Amazon pretty cheap. It's got the crank puller, chain whip, cassette tool, chain breaker and various other tools.
thanks for the comment Peter. I've been a mechanic for years, so I'm really comfortable with this stuff. Link below for the grease gun I use. I normally just fill it with a bearing grease I get from Canadian Tire. I get a marine grade bearing grease so that it handles weather well. The crank puller is from ParkTool and it wasn't very expensive...maybe $20. Well worth it! I did end up changing the bottom bracket with a new RaceFace one, but wasn't able to show that in the video. The bike totally rides like a dream now. If you've got an older Giant, I'd highly recommend tinkering with it. They can be a lot of fun to rebuild! www.amazon.ca/Astro-Pneumatic-101-Grease-Needle/dp/B000FMK7FG/ref=sr_1_32?keywords=grease+gun&qid=1669314509&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjMyIiwicXNhIjoiNS4yOCIsInFzcCI6IjQuOTMifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=grease%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-32
What is the final weight? Thx.
No idea Jay. I need to invest in a bike scale :)
I have the exact same bike, fully intact. Bearings are also shot in the front. Going to replace. My question is, what year is this freaking thing? Can't seem to figure it out via the serial number. Any help?
I believe it's a 2009, but could be mistaken!
I have this exact bike. And bought it new in 2009.
Nice work, love watching these dumpster rescue type of builds. This bike was my main workhorse for 12 years until I found fatigue cracks on the welds of the headtube and downtube a few weeks back. It is a nice speedy geometry and you can build it in so many ways. And a bit of a looker in my opinion, but thats subjective of course. Subbed, looking forward to future videos!
Very cool mate! They're nice bikes and seem to be quite versatile! Thanks for your comment and sorry to hear about the cracks on the welds :(
