Heifers
To choose whether we keep or sell one of our heifers, they must be pregnancy checked. This is our process... to move them quietly through the alleys and chute where the vet quickly decides if there is a calf and its expected due date. She is then marked and is written down for our records. If they are not pregnant, they are put into a small pen and will be sold.

Goofing Around

After hours of riding, sometimes you get a little goofy! I made up a radio station and Victoria gave me KABA, call sign with A Bar A, our brand! Quinlan, Victoria, Brandon and Megan, and some special guests are “ interviewed”. We are bringing our cattle off the mountain to a lower pasture. Rain and possibly snow are predicted soon, so we chose to do this a few days early on a gorgeous fall day.
Second Round of Mountain Work
Просмотров 163Год назад
Once again, we move a herd into the corral to vaccinate the calves. Short video clips take you through the entire day. We gather early in the morning and take them over to the corral. Calves are sorted from their mothers who noisily wait for them outside of the corral fence. My job is to sort from the main corral to smaller and smaller pens. At the end of the day, I walk you through it step by ...
A Bit of Mountain Work
Просмотров 507Год назад
We gathered one pasture and trailed to another where the cattle were corralled. Cows were separated from the calves since it was only the calves that needed their vaccinations. Everyone had their jobs, even the children. After the job was done, the calves were let out to go find their mothers. We took our lunch break. Everyone then mounted back up and sent the cattle into the next pasture. In t...

Bull Stuff

While gathering heifers, I watch as a bull tries to control his harem. Most people don’t know that bulls act this way. He tries to keep them in a herd, repeatedly bringing back heifers as they try to walk away. Follow me at reddirtinmysoul.com for daily photographs chronicling our Wyoming Centennial Ranch. We are the fourth, fifth, and sixth generations to live and raise cattle in this valley. ...

Hail Storm 2023
Просмотров 105Год назад
Gardening in Wyoming can be risky. You can be frozen in the middle of June (last year 2022) or, once again, hailed out. This was a very isolated hail storm, with stones about ping pong ball sized. Minor damage on vehicles and siding, but the biggest damage was in our alfalfa and native grass hay fields. More about ranchlife can be found with daily posts at reddirtinmysoul.com. A quiet look at artificial insemination on our ranch. Brandon and his family work a few head through the old shed. Gentle handling and soft voices are best while working livestock. Pairing Out
Просмотров 472Год назад
Cows and their calves need to be sorted from the herd as a pair. If they lose one another, instinct tells them to go to the last place they saw each other and that could be miles away! We "pair out" our herd, making sure the mommas have their babies. My grandchildren are getting better and better at this sometimes boring chore. It helps to put them on old horses that know what they are supposed...

We had hoped to miss the predicted blizzard that hit Wyoming April 3/4, 2023. This morning we had dry conditions but by afternoon had 6-9”. We drive through our cows, checking on everyone’s health as we do. I can see Johnny in Quinlan's face. I really enjoyed the on-the-spot interviews. Thanks, Carol.
I noticed the movement of Daniel on horseback that day and thought, That’s Johnny! It was very brief, but it’s amazing that we can see Johnny in his grandson and great grandson!
Love your videos. Its nice to see a family that works together and have fun..
Thank you!
Thank You!
We were at the cabin above BigTrails. Nothing damaged and horses were okay. It didn't last very long on the mountain top.
Wow; sorry to see that your fields got hit so hard. I was near Jeffery City the day this happened and we only got 10-15mm diameter hail; I am amazed to see what y’all received.
Isn’t that an acquired skill best performed by a trained dude who does it full time?
He was taught by a skilled teacher and has done it for 15 years. It’s akin to doing simple carpentry, auto repair, plumbing, or other skilled trade. One can be quite proficient without calling in a professional.
Dang i enjoyed this video. On a sat morning at 4am. In july. Sagebrush is awesome. The indians used it for medicinal purpose by boiling it and soaking in the juice when sick. Folks should research that. God had medicine for them indians: likely still there for others. Worked on a ranch in eastern sd in the 90’s as a teen. Most cows are docile like that if you treat their calf. Every now and then there is a bad cow. She should got to sale asap and not worth the trouble. Thanks for the pleasant narration voice. Was informative
Glad you enjoyed it.

It make me dizzy 🥴
🍀 P r o m o s m!!!
Where do you get your bulls?
does zig-zag single color patern goes str8 over complete lenght or it moves a bit like into spiral, like a drill bit ? When finished is there a chance to pull out center cord so braid gets little extended?
I think it tends to spiral just a bit, but I haven’t really paid attention. I kept the center cord in to make sure it remains round.
Nice 🥰
Great little photo show….. Love your photos….Great job Carol….

When it’s too cold to eartag them, we put Velcro on their legs with their identifying number on it so we can tag them when the weather warms.
