Welcome to my RUclips channel. My main interests are music, mathematics, literature, history, linguistics, medicine, photography and science. My two main instruments are the guitar and the violin. As a photographer, I'm beginning to experiment with video and I'm running a series of weblogs called Nature in Action. I'm very happy to talk about English Literature, and my main area of interest is 19th century/Victorian literature, but I also like like poetry and drama of all eras. As a mathematician my main interests are in Game Theory and Formal Logic. I occasionally dabble in current affairs and philosophy, but my philosophy tends to develop out of my interest in mathematics and "seeing patterns" in nature and music. I would consider myself a Humanist if you want to get into matters of faith. If you want to get in touch then by all means send me a private message.
A Simple Hack for Counting Complex Meters/Time Signatures
In this video I discuss a way of counting complex meters and time signatures. I show how you can take basic 2, 3, 4 and 5 beat patterns, link them together and overlay them to build complex poly rhythms. Although the idea comes from Indian music and fusion, it will help you if you play more progressive music like djent and math rock.

2014 Gibson Midtown Custom

Here's a recent acquisition - a Gibson 2014 Midtown Custom in tobacco sunburst. These guitars are now out of production, which is a shame. They are like a hybrid of a Les Paul custom and an ES335. They are also much more affordable than those guitars, so represent a good choice for players who want the best of those two designs.

In this video, I show you a simple "trick" to help learn the patterns of the melodic minor. Basically, if you think of the A melodic minor scale as an A major scale (i.e. Ionian mode) with a flat 3rd, you can take all the regular modal patterns and flatten one note and you get the modes of the melodic minor! This is a tough question, and one I've often thought about. Should you focus on your art and improving yourself as a musician? Or should you "play it safe" and keep with the 9 til 5, with music being an interesting hobby but nothing more. This video is my take on a very tricky question.

This video is a response to a recent video by Andy Edwards, entitled "Why do modern guitarists all sound the same". Here I'm discussing why we are living in one of the most creative eras thanks to the Internet - that rather than "having to conform" to "gate keepers" we are no longer constrained by style and genre conventions. In short, musicians go there own way.

Here's my arrangement of the "Tears in Rain" theme from Blade Runner. I was going to use guitar synth to get close to the bell-like tones Vangelis originally used, but I think the guitar sounds much more emotive. Hope you enjoy it!

In this video I'm comparing my two Dean Vinnie Moore "Vinman 2000's". One is made in Indonesia, the other is made in China. The Indonesian one has a maple cap, whilst the Chinese one (it's not a Chibson!) has a graphic finish based on Vinnie's 1986 debut album, Mind's Eye.

Allan Holdsworth "Synthaxe" Patch on the SY-200?

Recently, I've been exploring the Boss SY-200 guitar synth. I found that the patch "007" is very similar to the synth patch Allan Holdsworth used for his Synthaxe on the title track of his Sand album. Pity I can't play like Holdsworth! Nevertheless, here's my pastiche of that.
Turning my Guitar into a 100 piece Symphony Orchestra

In this video I use a Boss SY-200 guitar synth and a Strymon Nightsky ambient reverb to create the sound of a huge symphony orchestra. On the SY-200 I'm using patch 60, which is a layered strings setting. On the Nightsky I'm using patch 2, which gives an orchestral tone. Put the two together and it sounds immense.

Hi, just seen your video on your Palm Bay Cyclone. Really glad you like it. I actually founded and ran the company for 28 years. I designed and built all the models of which there were many. I designed the Cyclone in 1995 and sold them predominantly in Japan as the best seller in the UK was the three pickup model called the Tidalwave. I actually passed the business over to someone new in 2018 and am now not involved directly with them. I do keep an eye out for them though. The guitar you have is a beauty. Errata: at 9.25 I called it Phrygian b6 when it should have been Mixolydian b6. Otherwise, it should be okay.
Great pedal .... Use O/D setting only ... then ..... FREQ hard right / CONTOUR hard left adjust EQ to taste and it's a flat out solid pedal. MY EQ settins are: O/D - Gain 1 O'Clock Volume noon Bass at 10 O'Clock (I use a closed backed 2X12 cab) Treble 1 O'Clock FREQ panned hard right (this is the key in my opinion) - turn it all the way to the right Contour panned hard left or try between 7 and 9 o'clock. Really a great pedal for a clean amp platform. The Dist side of it for me is not good at all but the OD side is excellent. Use mine through a Fender Blues Jr (converted to head) and Quilter Tone Block 202. Thanks for giving this a review. They really are fantastic.

I'm really late to the party here, but I played one of these today. Ridiculously heavy. Would really struggle with gigging with one of these or playing it for extended periods.
Thanks. Yes, I agree! Mahogany body and neck, 27.5 inch scale and the cheesy bat inlays. I ended up trading it in for something else. I still think the video is fun tho' for anyone interested in 7 strings.

The Dinky EX Pro was made in Japan, 93. It only came out in that configuration for a year. They are one of the most sought after Dinky series.

pretty funny, I was googling around to see if the 2005 burns was any better or worse then what is out there now, this video was exactly what I was looking for. I have this exact model and always thought it was odd the switches were black, the tremolo arm was a different shape without the knitting needle end and was missing the half moon plate by the tremolo. But that's only aesthetical things, in the end... which one sounds better is the most important.

@@peterquinn7237 yeah, those are said to be pretty sweet. How about the BMG Super RS? I believe those are as accurately close to BM's setup as you can possibly get. They run around 3-4k.
@@JPDay Thanks. Yes, I'm aware of them, but there is a waiting list. I spoke with Loxley Guitars at the Birmingham Guitar Show in February. They will build a replica for you at a similar price, but you can customise it how you want i.e.. a flame top, an F hole, different woods etc.

Thanks. Yes, if you watch the original scene with Rutger Hauer's delivery of the monologue, you'll notice it's quite stilted and hesitant. Vangelis clearly followed this in his score. It's still a very powerful piece of cinema.

It's a real 1500 Floyd (1000 series with stainless steel parts to prevent wear). The hard tail versions may have a Hipshot bridge?

Di Meola's sound is in his hands and sense of time. He has a unique vibrato that is easily recognizable no matter what tone or effects he's using.
True. However, he has left a legacy of good music and unique stylistics worth pursuing through.
@@peterquinn7237 I think he's a fine composer and arranger. And an excellent record producer. But I haven't really been inspired by much of anything he's released in the past 24 years or so. Zona Desperata is the last piece I really loved.
I remember Claudio Quartarone playing like this (right hand technique) many years ago. Congratulations to Matteo for his immense talent.

Put a Jackson js11 in some hands and a original Gibson 59 sunburst will sound the same player hands matter more
