I guess it’s just the art of life.

Some people complain a lot about the piano solo but I’ve always found it to be the most important symbolism in the song’s message. My interpretation, at least, is that the piano is following the thoughts of someone becoming depressed, or suicidal. The melody that begins it is the normal, happy thoughts and will to live. Then we get a buildup of stress, which eventually explodes into discord, scattered thoughts following a rough event. These start to drown out the “will to live” melody and eventually all we hear is chaos, anguish that comes and goes, sometimes fading and then suddenly returning. I believe this represents the suicidal thoughts. But despite everything we can faintly hear that “will to live” melody, as the pain and chaos fades away. The melody is slightly altered at times, showing the scars the event left, but still showing that the will to live is strong. In the end, that’s what the song is all about. Dealing with events that make one depressed and even suicidal, but holding on to the will to live and fighting through to triumph in the end, scarred but alive. Like so many power metal songs, it’s about a battle. But this one is one that many people fight every day. Absolute masterpiece of a song.
